Hill View Primary School Newsletter No 1. 09/09/16

Welcome to the all new Hill View Primary School weekly newsletter. This will not only act as a way of us keeping you up to date with the latest goings on at Hill View, but it will also give us a great opportunity to celebrate some of our pupil’s achievements. Each newsletter will be delivered on a Friday afternoon, straight to your inbox, and will be full of information we would usually need to send in individual letters We’re really proud of all our pupils at Hill View, and this week we are especially pleased to see everyone settling in well for a new school year. In the future, this section will be used to showcase some of our pupil’s achievements, so please let us know if there is anything extra special your child has achieved that you want to celebrate with us! We’ll also use this space to celebrate each half term’s ASCENT award winners! Keep your eyes peeled! Welcome Back! Coming back to school after a long summer away is always a stressful time, but it is great to see everyone again! We’d also like to offer an extra special Hill View welcome to our new starters this year, and wish them all the best of luck for their time with us. If anyone has any problems during the start of the new school year, please don’t hesitate to get in contact with us and we’ll do our best to sort any issues we can help with. Settling In The first day of school marks a whole new part of life for every child, and it’s great to see so many parents and carers being supportive of their children as they begin a new journey with us. Reception classes will soon be in for the full day, so we’ll definitely be seeing some tired children by 3pm soon! Year 1 had a bit of a surprise this week when all their teachers forgot it was the start of the new year! Mrs Jones had to call them all in the morning to remind them to come in, and they all arrived in their pyjamas to find their classrooms not ready for the new year. Luckily, the year 1’s were there ready to help them get the classrooms sorted including creating displays, labelling storage and choosing where books should go.

STOP THE PRESS! A pupil at Hill View Primary has just had a confirmed case of Measles. Please keep an eye on your children for any signs of illness, and seek medical advice if required.

Sports Clubs Mrs Taylor’s free sports clubs start from 19th September. Letters about these clubs will begin coming home from next week.

Attendance As we go into a new school year, we want to remind everyone about the importance of good attendance! If a child is off for any reason, the correct procedures must be followed by parents/carers. Check the website for more information - click ‘About Us’ then ‘Policies’ then choose the absence policy.

Read Write Inc Training As you know, we teach phonics and reading through Read Write Inc. In order for our new teachers Miss MacKenzie, Mrs Knapper and Miss Hardwicke to be fully trained for this, they will be out of class on Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th September. All classes will be covered by regular supply teachers. Miss MacKenzie’s class will be covered by Mrs Everett. Mrs Knapper’s class will be covered by Mrs Cardle. Miss Hardwicke’s class will be covered by Mrs Collins. Uniform It’s great to see everyone looking so smart at school this year! We’d like to extend our thanks to everyone for supporting our uniform policy, as we believe this creates an equal community with a great sense of pride and belonging within the school. Uniform is no longer available to be purchased at school. To purchase school uniform, please contact CJI Clothing, either at cjiclothing.com (click products, then school wear, then Hill View) or in person at 886 Wimborne Road, Moordown. Say Cheese! It’s that time of year again—School photos will be taken on Monday (12th) and Tuesday (13th) by our local photographer. The photos will be individual, although groups of siblings attending the school will also be able to have group photos taken. Proofs will be sent out with order forms shortly after. Make sure everyone is wearing their smartest uniform and brightest smiles! Meet The Teacher Meet the teacher afternoons will be taking place at the dates and times below. These are hands-on activities that provide practical, relevant advice. Places are limited and booking is essential. Sessions are at 9:45am and 12:30pm and last 2 hours. Call Helen Bromley on 01202 591330 or email [email protected] to book your place for £5 including refreshments.

Toys, Balls & Cards We ask that toys from home are not brought into school grounds. There is plenty of equipment available on site for use during break times, and toys from home are often damaged, misplaced or lost.

Bikes and Scooters may not be ridden in the school playground. They may be left on the school premises through the day securely locked in the bike shelter or scooter mushrooms. Ball games are not allowed on school grounds before or after school. Please do not park cars in the school car park during school hours. Leave of absence during school time will only be granted in ‘exceptional circumstances’. Please make applications for leave of absence for ‘exceptional circumstances’ in writing to the Head teacher, giving as much information as possible.

Safeguarding Hill View Primary School and Bournemouth Local Authority are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. We will ensure that all our recruitment and selection practices reflect this responsibility. If you would like to read the school’s Child Protection Policy please look on the website or speak to a member of staff in the office. If at any point you have any concerns regarding your child, please speak to your class teacher in the first instance. Mrs Jenkins (Pastoral Support Worker) and members of the Senior Leadership team will be in the playground in the mornings and afternoons to welcome you and your child to school. Please do not hesitate to speak to us at any time.

Nuts and nut products are not allowed on site, even as part of a packed lunch. This is due to the fact that some of our pupils have severe allergies, and the risk would be too high. We appreciate your cooperation in this.

Coffee Mornings Continuing this term is the parent coffee mornings. On the first Thursday of each month at 9am, we hold a coffee morning to give you the chance to meet our Parent Support Worker, Mrs Cathy Jenkins, as well as other school support staff. Preschoolers and buggies are welcome! The first date this year is 6th October.

Term Dates Term dates and inset days for the coming year are available to view on the calendar on the website.

School Office The school office is open from 8:00am to 5:00pm each day. The office staff will be happy to help with any queries you have during these hours. Early Mornings! The gates to the school playground are opened from 8:30am and 3:15pm. The gates are locked by 8:50am once all parents have left the site. At 8:40am teachers collect the children from the playground and lead them into school. This practice helps build the children’s independence and gives them time to hang up their coats, organise their belongings and prepare ready for the register at 8:50am. Children and parents are not permitted to enter the buildings in the morning to ensure that children can move around the school independently and safely.

We would welcome any feedback you may have, so don’t hesitate to get in contact with me at [email protected] to let me know what you think! Don’t forget to check the pages after the end of the newsletter too, as we may attach letters from staff, governors and pupils too, as well as community notices when appropriate! (This week we have a letter from the chair of Governors on the following page and a notice for all parents and carers of KS1 children after that.)

Welcoming in a new school year marks the perfect opportunity to remember the school values and ethos. ASCENT stands for our ethos values. Each week at the end of the newsletter we will look at an aspect of ASCENT and how it affects your child’s daily life both at school and at home. Hill View Primary School 08/09/2016

Dear parents and guardians, At our governing body meeting this week we reviewed the progress that the school made through the last school year. This review truly made us all appreciate just how busy a year it was, with a great deal of change and challenge coming from a number of different directions, including externally driven changes to curriculum and assessment, Academy conversion and new school initiatives. Whilst there will always be the need to try new things and further refine established practices, it was a particularly demanding year and so we are, as a governing body, very keen to express our thanks to all of the schools staff for their hard work and to you as parents and guardians for your continued support of the school and your children’s learning. It is particularly pleasing to see from pupil achievement data that children are making real progress, with the levels of attainment in most areas increasing year on year. It has also been a busy year for leadership and governance. You may remember from 1st October 2015 Hill View School became part of the Bournemouth Primary Multi Academy Trust (MAT) together with Malmesbury Park School. A great deal of work was undertaken through the last school year to establish new processes and complete the conversion to Academy status. I am pleased to report that the MAT structure and systems are now largely in place and working well. Due partly to the formation of the MAT board and governor resignations, we significantly refreshed the governing body composition through the year and start this year in a strong position. Profiles of all schools governors will be updated shortly onto the school web site. Once again, many thanks from the governors for your continued support for the school and your children’s education. Best wishes,

Dr. Jeff Bray Chair of Governors

Parents / Carers of Year R, 1 and 2, Join us to celebrate the fact your child can receive free hot school meals under the Universal Infant Free School Meals scheme. On October 6th we’re encouraging KS1 children, who can all enjoy hot school meals for free, to give it a try and see if they like it! There is no commitment if it doesn’t go down well, and for the ‘give it a try’ day we’ll allow the child to bring a packed lunch too, just in case! Orders for the October 6th meal, and meals going forward from then should be placed online with Chartwells by 25th September. It’s completely free for those in KS1, and of course older children can continue to enjoy school meals at the price of only £2.20 a day! The menu for the day is a popular one: Roast Turkey with Gravy

Roast Potatoes

Quorn Fillet with Gravy

Green Beans

Jacket Potato with Tuna Mayonnaise

Chocolate Brownie

If you don’t fancy dessert, you can always enjoy fresh fruit or yoghurt!

The choice of meal varies greatly throughout the year so your child will never get bored of the food, and it means no more looking for new ideas for packed lunches or bringing them into school when they’re forgotten. The food is nutritionally balanced and meets the School Food Standards as set out by law. The best bit, however, is that for KS1 children they are completely free, all year! The meal for the ‘Give It A Try’ day on October 6th can easily be ordered online at https://dorset.mealselector.co.uk/. Once you’ve set your account up, ordering future free school meals is simple and offers full flexibility! If you have any problems with this, there is a guide which can be found on our website, or give us a call and we’ll endeavour to help you as much as possible. We look forward to serving your children a lovely hot meal on the day, and potentially going forwards into the future.
