Dear Parents, December has arrived in school which always means excitement is brewing (not just for the children). I know all children and staff are working especially hard to ensure our performances next week really are ‘the best that they can be’. I would like to thank you all in advance for supporting your child with their costumes, and look forward to seeing you all next week at the various performances throughout the week. Listening to the singing that travels into my office I know that you are all in for a real treat. Before and after the performances FTJ will be selling Thomas Jolyffe Christmas Puddings along with the remaining numbers on the Christmas Lucky Square. We will also be holding a collection after the performances, where all money raised will be added to the ICT Suite fund. There is a ‘totaliser’ in the Junior Hall where we will be tracking our route to reaching the grand total of £50,000. So please dig dip as every penny counts! On a more serious note, due to health and safety regulations there is a limit to the number of adults and children we can have in the hall at any one time. So please can I ask, that unless you have a ticket, you do not try and attend a performance, as unfortunately you will be turned away. If you do require extra tickets please speak to your child’s class teacher directly. Wishing you all a lovely weekend,
Thank you for your continued support Mrs Shelley Bamford Acting Head Teacher
THE SHAKESPEARE SILENCE I would like to congratulate Helen Evans who has self published her first novel. Mrs Helen Evans, a Learning Assistant at Thomas Jolyffe has recently completed writing her debut novel ‘The Shakespeare Silence’. “One evening in April 1864, a young man is murdered in the back streets of Stratford-upon-Avon. 150 years later, with the discovery of a diary and photographs, the murderous past threatens to overwhelm the present.” 'The Shakespeare Silence' is available to buy on Amazon under the name H M Evans, and I’m sure Helen will be pleased to sign copies. The book would make a great stocking filler for adults.
SUPERSTAR WRITERS
DIARY DATES
At Thomas Jolyffe Primary School, we believe that literacy and communication are key life skills. Through the English curriculum, we help children develop the skills and knowledge that will enable them to communicate effectively and creatively through spoken and written language and equip them with the skills to become lifelong learners. We want children to enjoy and appreciate literature and its rich variety.
5.12.16 Reception Christmas play 9.30am
In order to accelerate the progress of writing at our school, in Spring 2016, we implemented the Talk for Writing teaching and learning strategies.
7.12.16 Y4&Y5 Christmas Play 6pm
Talk for Writing, developed by Pie Corbett and supported by Julia Strong, is powerful because it is based on the principles of how children learn. It enables children to imitate the language they need for a particular topic orally before reading and analysing it and then writing their own version. Over recent months, we have trained teachers and learning assistants in Talk for Writing teaching strategies and we have adjusted our English Long Term plan to ensure it allows pupils to access a wider range of genres and writing opportunities. We are in the process of developing a bank of model texts that ensures more robust progression from Reception to Year 6. Consequently, we are finding that pupil enthusiasm, engagement and attainment are improving. This was evident this week when I was visited by Harry and Henry in 6M to show me their fantastic writing. The two boys had written letters suggesting ways in which we as a school could support the Syrian refugee children . I must say that both boys had put forward some really interesting and exciting activities in a clear concise way , as a result we will be taking part in a fundraising event suggested by Year 6 in the new year..

CLOPTON NURSERY The Nursery opened in January 2000 after a need for pre-school education for children entering reception at Thomas Jolyffe Primary School was identified. It was also identified that children attending the school required wrap around care both in the morning and early evening, to address this Breakfast and After School Clubs were also set up. The Nursery is governed by the board of Trustees all of whom give their time for free. Trustees are the people who lead Clopton Nursery and decide how it is run. Being a Trustee means making decisions that will impact on children’s lives as well as making a difference to your local community, using your skills and experience to support Clopton Nursery in helping them to achieve their aims. If you are interested in becoming a Trustee please contact Clopton Nursery on 01789 269360 for more information.
