ChrisTalk May 2012

Dear St. Christopher’s Family, In a small Episcopal church in the middle of Wyoming there is a fascinating picture on the wall in their Parish Hall. From a distance you can see the face of Jesus (at least what someone imagined Jesus to look like). As you walk closer to the picture, and observe it from a few feet away, you can see the details of Jesus’ face, which are made up of very tiny faces of people, creatively placed to make up the light and shadows of the face of our Savior. You may have seen this picture or something similar.

St. Christopher’s Mission Statement: “ To know Christ, and to show Christ”

May 2012

Theologically, it symbolizes the body of Christ… that we are all known by God… that we are all loved by Jesus… and that we all partake in His ministry through the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The beautiful little faces in the picture depict famous people, such as Einstein and Gandhi, as well as hundreds of ordinary human beings of all ages and races. No one is left out. We are all members of Christ’s body. We, as the body of Christ at St. Christopher’s, have incredibly gifted people in our midst; every single one of us has amazing things to contribute to our Church and the community of Cheyenne, from our sweet toddlers up through our beloved senior citizens. God puts no age limit on who we are as members of Christ’s body. It is time that we, individually and corporately, come out of our shells, and acknowledge the gifts God has given us to share with the rest of the world… even our small corner of this world. Claiming that we, individually or corporately, have no gifts is denying the power that God has given us to make the world a better place. By our birth, we are made in the image of God. By our baptism we are born into Christ’s death and resurrection. By the anointing of the Holy Spirit, at baptism, we are given the power and freedom to share God’s gifts to those in need. We are the face of Christ to everyone we meet, just as they are to us. That picture of Christ, with all the little faces on it, is us. He has left his imprint on us, and we are to do the same, in the name of Christ. As Archbishop Desmond Tutu says, as he exchanges the peace, “I love the face of the one I see before me.”

Most often when we think of Mom, we think of what she’s given; The softness of a loving touch, a gentle guide for living; a nightly tip-toe in a room, an understanding look; but sometimes when I think of Mom I think of what she took. She took a child and taught it how to live this life with pride. She took those kindergarten tears, and kept them all inside. She took the hands that longed to hold her child and not let go, used them to push her child along the way, to thrive and grow. Took time to do some other things like sew, and clean and cook, and never thought to ask for thanks for all the things she took. Thanks, Mom

For the past five months I have served as your Church Secretary and I have enjoyed every minute of it and it has been a blessing for me to be here and to get to know you all. You all have shown me kindness and have demonstrated Christ’s unconditional love. Now, God has called me to a new position and challenge. I have accepted a full time position with the State of Wyoming, on the Governor’s staff starting Monday, April 30, 2012. God is writing a new chapter in my life and I hope you will pray for and with me that I will be a blessing to all that I have the opportunity to meet and work with in this position.

St. Christopher’s, St. Christopher’s “How Does Your Garden Grow?” It is time to think about gardening once again. Building and Grounds will once again prepare the ground for planting. We will be adding compost this year. If you are able to help with hauling compost, please let Gene Williams know, 421-4911. A date will be scheduled soon for tilling and adding the compost. The Children Genesis Gardener’s are also planning on building a compost bin and doing our own composting. Please save your vegetable trimmings and left over’s, coffee and tea grounds, bags and filters are ok to compost. Grass clippings that have not been treated with pesticides and herbicides, and any other plant materials are good compost material. Animal products, meat or dairy are not acceptable for vegetable composting.
