COUNCIL NOTES Your Council meets with the Councils of Smoky Lake County, Town of Smoky Lake and the Village of Waskatenau quarterly. Through this process numerous cooperative initiatives have commenced. The most active of these is the Regional Community Development Committee. The purpose of the RCDC is to develop a diversified economic base in the Smoky Lake region. Through this initiative an Economic Development Officer, Shaun Green, has been hired. Through Shaun, and his predecessor Shane Pospisil , the RCDC has put together a regional strategic plan which addresses a strong commitment to environmentally sound economic development and long term sustainability. Through this Committee and the Regional Municipalities meetings, the region is addressing the goals set out in the Municipal Government Act that identifies the need for:
Enhancing municipal accountability Enabling more efficient municipal operations Enhancing municipal viability Strengthening municipal and inter-municipal planning.
Council’s hope is that through regional cooperation the Village can more readily provide services that, individually, each municipality would not be able to provide. CARBON MONOXIDE SAFETY Carbon Monoxide is colourless, odorless and deadly. Learn simple safety tips to help keep you and your family safe.
1. Get your fuel-burning appliances checked by a qualified technician. (stove, furnace, fireplace, hot water tank, etc.) Gas flame should be blue! 2. Ensure the area around vents is clear, allowing air to flow freely. 3. Do not idle your vehicle in the garage, even if the door is open. 4. Install and maintain Carbon Monoxide Detectors.
Owners, whose dogs are loose, not cleaned up after, bite, or bark excessively risk losing their cash and/or their pet. Please have consideration for your neighbors and your animal.
Did you ever notice that the dogs seem to know when the bylaw officer is in town. They don’t come out until he leaves town. RESPECT YOUR NEIGHBOURS, KEEP YOUR DOGS ON A LEASH OR ON YOUR OWN PROPERTY. NO ONE LIKES STEPPING IN DOGGY DOOO.
Winter brings snow, remember it is your
responsibility to clear the snow from the sidewalk in front of and beside your property within 72 hours of the snowfall. By clearing the snow as soon as it falls, it doesn’t get walked on, and therefore is easier to clear. READ YOUR WATER METER ….. Because we no longer have the benefit of ACTO Electric reading our water meters, we need your help. Please read your water meter in the latter half of DECEMBER and phone the Village office with the reading. 780-6363620. Leave the reading in a voice message (with your account # or address). Thank you. If you can provide the reading, you will only be charged for the water you use. If we don’t have a reading we will estimate. Guess what, we usually estimate high. It’s to your benefit to get us those readings in to the office.
CONGRATULATIONS AND MANY THANKS!! If you were able to attend the Christmas Craft and Trade Fair, you will have realized how much hard work went into it! The Grads and Girl Guides raised funds at tables donated to them. The Smoky Lake Food Bank Received 251 pounds of food from donations made at the door, and the St. Paul Women’s Shelter received $102.00 in donations. People from far and wide attended. Without folks willing to donate their time and efforts, this type of event wouldn’t be possible. So congratulations and thanks to Marion Vinette and Melissa McEachern for their huge efforts to put on an awesome event!!

Welcome to Winter!!!!
Winter hours for recycling are now in effect. November to May = Every 2nd Monday
***Recycling will not be picked up on Wednesday, nor garbage on Monday.*** A handy way to remember is to mark it on your calendar.
Recycling Pick-up dates for November are: Nov. 9th & 23rd. December are: Dec. 7th & 21st. Winter brings challenges for garbage pick-up. I ask that access be cleared to the garbage receptacle. As always “TIE YOUR BAGS!” Cold weather makes plastic bags brittle, so please don’t jam your bags into the cans. If the bag breaks you are responsible for clean-up. Better to have 2 bags than using the second one to clean up the mess. Enjoy your holiday season and REMEMBER …. All wrapping paper and cardboard can
be set out for recycle pick up. However, Styrofoam and plastic are garbage.
LOOSE GARBAGE IN CANS OR CONTAINERS WILL NOT BE PICKED UP UNTIL IT IS BAGGED AND TIED.
The Vilna Transfer Station is open on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 9am to 5pm.
