DREXEL VOLUME II, ISSUE I
MESSAGE FROM COACH AZEVEDO As we approach a new season of wrestling, I am growing more and more excited everyday. These Dragons have put in a lot of consistent, quality training this summer and are working hard to prepare for our first compeCCon next week. I can see a sense of pride and ownership in our team this year. The guys are proud to be a part of the Drexel Wrestling program, and are eager to put their hard work to use this season.
WEIGHT-BY-WEIGHT PREVIEW 125 – We have three talented freshmen ba1ling for the spot this year. Kevin Devoy, a 4x New Jersey State Placer, Jordan Hart, a Nevada State Champion, Jake Goodwin, a 3x NaConal Prep Placer, and junior Steve Winfield will all challenge for this spot. We are eager to see who comes out on top!
133 – We have some new faces at this weight, as well: sophomore Franco Ferraina will make the move from 125, freshman David Pearce comes to us from Illinois where he was a State Champion and 3x finalist, and freshman Clay Lutzow is also from Illinois where he was a 2x State Placer.
141 – This spot has been solidified by Senior Frank Cimato. Frank had a great season last year, but fell short of qualifying to the NCAA Tournament. We are confident that Frank will make a big splash on the naConal scene this year. Senior Josh Yurasits and sophomore Garth Mahosky will see some acCon while backing up Cimato. 149 – Junior Shane Fenningham returns aNer a strong summer of training. He has made huge gains since last season, but will be challenged by freshman, MaI Cimato. Ma1 is a 2x Pennsylvania State Placer. Red-‐shirt freshman, Nick Maccini, will also get some experience at 149 this season. 157 – Junior AusNn Sommer returns aNer a strong sophomore campaign leading the team with six pins. He will be challenged by transfer, Noel Blanco. Noel comes to us from Mt. SAC in California. Others that will contest for the spot are freshman Jason Fugiel, a 2x Illinios State Placer, freshman Wills Long, from Pennsylvania, freshman Michael Paccione, sophomore Nick DragoneIe, and junior KenyaIa Brown.
165 – 3x NCAA qualifier, Joe Booth looks to make his senior season one to remember, as he starts the season off ranked 13th in the naCon. He will be backed up by Senior Chaz Aungst, sophomore Brendan Sebera, sophomore Nick Grinups, freshman and California State placer, Dallas Poston, and freshman Coleman Delude. 174 – This weight also welcomes some new faces. Freshman Conor Moran, a 2x Pennsylvania State placer will be the front-‐ runner here. He will be challenged by junior Kevin Matyas, who filled in last year at 174 and 184, and came away with a couple of big wins for the team. Freshman Steven Elicegui, a 3x Nevada State Champion, will red-‐shirt due to injury this year.
184 – At 184, two sophomores, Ethan Keiser and Bryan Sternlieb return, each trying to earn a starCng posiCon. Another one to keep your eye on is freshman Gage Harrah, a 2x Illinois State Champion, who could make some noise for the Dragons this season. Nick BecaVni will red-‐shirt due to injury.
197 – CAA Conference finalist and NCAA qualifier, Brandon Palik, returns for his Junior year ranked 17th in the naCon. Brandon has his goals set high for this season. Keep an eye on Brandon, because he looks like a caged animal right now! I would not want to get in his way! HWT – Here you’ll see some new, yet familiar faces. Jamie Callender is making the move to heavy weight. He has been out the last two seasons due to injury, but he’s back and very moCvated. Max Wright is a sophomore with a great work ethic. He will definitely see some Cme in the starCng line-‐up this year. We also added two freshmen that will likely red-‐ shirt: Kyle Stanton, a New York State Champion, and Joe Giorgio, a Pennsylvania State qualifier.
THE PINNERS CLUB NEEDS YOU! The Drexel Wrestling Pinners’ Club was a huge success in its debut year, earning almost $4,000 for the wrestling program. We had 30 generous donaCons totaling $220 per pin, and a total of 17 pins over the season. This is a program that not only raises a great amount of money for our team, but also pushes our athletes to go for the pin in every match! In our second year of the Pinners’ Club, I’d like to see each pin go up to $500. I am inviNng you to pledge a dollar amount for every pin registered by a Drexel wrestler during the 2012-‐2013 season. If you are interested, please email me at
[email protected] and let me know!
TYLER NAUMAN NAMED ASSISTANT COACH As you may or may not know, Todd Schavrien went back to his alma mater as the Director of Wrestling OperaCons at the University of Missouri during the off-‐season. Todd did a great job in his year on the Drexel staff, and I have every confidence that he will be an asset to the Tigers in the upcoming years. Our new assistant is a familiar face to the Pennsylvania wrestling scene. This year, we welcome Tyler Nauman as our second assistant. Nauman is a recent graduate of the University of Pi1sburgh, where he was a four-‐year le1er winner and twice earned All-‐American honors. In 2010 he earned the honor at 141 pounds, and as a senior was an All-‐ American at 149 pounds. He finished fiNh in the NCAA Championships in each of those seasons. Nauman was also a four-‐Cme EWL conference champion and won over 100 matches while at Pi1. He served as team captain as both a junior and a senior. Nauman graduated in April 2012 with a degree in communicaCons. He is working on a master's degree in Sports Management at Drexel. We are thrilled to have Tyler and his wife Beth join the Drexel Dragon Wrestling Family!
