Nichols College makes its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance after an historic regular season that saw the Bison post a program-record 15 wins and capture the team’s first-ever TCCC Championship title. TCCC Champs: The Bison claimed the TCCC Championship title on penalty kicks last Saturday, advancing past third-seeded Gordon for Nichols’ first-ever conference crown. Tied 1-1 through 110 minutes of play, Nichols won the penalty kicks, 3-1, backed by an outstanding fourth-round stop by goalkeeper Brendan Hamilton. Nichols advanced to the finals in similar fashion, ousting fourth seed Salve Regina in the fifth round of PK’s, 3-1, after two overtimes of scoreless play. The Bison shut out eighth seed Endicott, 2-0, in the quarterfinals. Iron Curtain: Nichols has allowed just 10 goals through 21 games for a staggering 0.48 goals per game. The Bison gave up one goal through 310 minutes of playoff soccer to boast a microscopic 0.29 goals against average. On the season, the Bison defense has allowed 12.2 shots per game. Shut Out Show: Nichols set a program record for shutouts (13) and consecutive shutouts (5) this season. Junior goalkeeper Brendan Hamilton set the program’s career shutout record with 18. Nichols in the NCAA’s: The men’s soccer team becomes the fifth Nichols College team to make an NCAA tournament appearance. They join the 2002 women’s soccer team, the 2009 men’s ice hockey team, the 2009 field hockey team and the 2010 women’s tennis team. No Nichols squad has advanced past the first round. Not on Our Turf: Nichols won its first nine home games of the season, and is now 10-1-2 on the year in Dudley, Mass. The Bison are 5-1-2 on Vendetti Field. Series vs. Eastern Connecticut: The two teams last met in the 2008 ECAC DIII Soccer Championship Tournament, with the Warriors prevailing, 5-0 on November 12th. The Warriors hold a 7-0 lead in the all-time series which dates back to 1982. Five wins have come via shutout.

Offense Wins Championships Too: Nichols is known for its defensive prowess this season, but also ended conference play as one of the top offensive teams in the TCCC. Nichols is led by 13 goals and 30 points from sophomore midfielder Scott Coderre, and has received 11 goals from first year midfielder Brendan Whitson in just seven starts. Midfielders Mark Capitanio and Mike Schell have had balanced attacks with Capitanio logging 20 points on seven goals and six assists and Schell chipping in with five goals and five helpers.
