Pella's Outdoor Warning System From the unseasonably warm March to the wet and windy April, this spring has been a reminder of the unpredictability of Iowa weather. After seeing the aftermath from some of the storms that recently hit our state and the Midwest, I feel it is important to inform our citizens about Pella’s outdoor warning system. Being prepared when severe weather strikes can help save lives as well as property. The City of Pella has an outdoor warning system that consists of eight warning sirens placed strategically around the City. This month I would like to encourage citizens to familiarize themselves with the various tones regarding the City's outdoor warning system and to heed any warnings given. The first tone activated is a continuous, steady siren, which during an actual warning indicates that Marion County, including the Pella area, has been placed under a tornado warning according to the National Weather Service. In the event of an actual warning, the public address is only activated if a tornado has been sighted and citizens are then instructed of the sighting and told to take immediate shelter. The second tone is a pulsating air horn tone (all clear) which is sounded after notification from the National Weather Service that the severe weather is no longer a threat to our community. In the past, there has been some confusion deciphering the fire siren and tornado siren. The siren activated in conjunction with a fire is a wail siren verses the several minute duration of the tornado alert siren. If you have questions about the City's warning system, please contact the Pella Police Department, 614 Main Street, 641-628-4921.

Positively Pella

Why is Positively Pella so positive for Pella? Yes, Positively Pella is my job and my livelihood, but I can honestly say I’m passionate about the Positively Pella program. I wanted to take a moment to explain what Positively Pella is and some of the ways in which it benefits this community. The goal of Positively Pella is to provide assistance to potential and actual new residents to Pella, as well as promote Pella as a great place to live. This is achieved by giving tours to prospective residents, becoming an easy source of information to help new residents get established and to thrive, and creating a hospitable atmosphere by organizing new resident events and supporting programs like Young Professionals. The benefit to the community is multifaceted and differs from group to group. For businesses who hire these employees, it tends to mean less turnover and therefore less money spent on retraining a new employee. For small business owners, it means more dollars spent locally. For the general public, Positively Pella means happy neighbors who are committed to Pella. People who feel welcome typically become more involved in schools, churches, and other organizations, and take pride in the community. We all benefit when people are committed to the good of the town. To have the best people coming into the community and to bring out the best in them, you have to show them why Pella is great and make it feel like home. That is exactly what Positively Pella aims to do.

Thank you to Positively Pella’s sponsor corporations for their continued support!

Tourism: The Smart Investment As I write my contribution this month for “Nieuwsbrief”, details are being finalized for Tulip Time 2012. From what I hear from most businesses, it has been a great start to the 2012 visitor season. By the time this article reaches you, “Tulip Time” will have passed and the only thing left will be taking notes for next year and possibly paying some bills. Hopefully, we as a community have provided an experience that will make the visitors want to return to see us again. We want them to consider coming back in the future when “mother nature” allows for a more timely arrival of our tulips. The Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB), under the umbrella of the Pella Chamber of Commerce, goes to great lengths to reach out to invite people from outside our immediate area to come to our community each year. The greatest part of our budget in the CVB goes to advertising, promoting, and essentially inviting people to Pella. This helps ensure that we keep the people coming that help keep the hotel rooms full, the restaurants busy, and the retail store registers ringing. One major area of concern for the Pella CVB is that due to budget concerns, the State of Iowa has chosen for the third consecutive year to reduce appropriations for tourism. It seems to me that this might not be the best way to go about reducing our state’s budgets woes. Dollars spent on promotion of tourism might well be some of the most beneficial dollars our state government spends each year. The fact is, tourism generates tax revenue and

keeps people working. Dollars spent by visitors to Iowa pay several different taxes including sales tax and gasoline tax. The dollars spent increase revenues and profits for businesses, resulting in more profit and a higher net income tax liability for those businesses. The tourism industry in Iowa employs thousands of people and those people are also paying their share of the state’s tax revenues. The state’s budget for tourism for 2012 is just over 4 million dollars. This seems like a small price to pay for an industry that generates over $6 billion (that is billion with a “b”) dollars in revenue. According to the Travel Federation of Iowa, the state of Iowa’s financial contribution to promote tourism ranks 47th of all 50 states. I suggest increasing the tourism budget to the $5 million dollars suggested by the Travel Federation of Iowa might be dollars well spent. Reach out to our legislators and encourage them to support tourism. Let’s not sit idly by while the state chooses again to reduce tourism as part of the budget. In Pella we probably know better than most the impact tourism makes on our community. Our visitors and the dollars they spend here are a significant part in what makes Pella (what I consider) the best community in the state of Iowa. I hope you have had a great Tulip Time and that the jump start we have gotten this year in the retail season continues. Let’s all do our part all year long to provide all our visitors and customers an experience to remember and keep them coming back. Let’s make the 2012 year a great year for all.

Tulip Time 2012 Although most of the tulips had already bloomed, there was no lack of fun at Tulip Time 2012! From the Dutch Dancing to the parades, and the poffertjes to the street scrubbers, everyone had a great time celebrating Pella’s Dutch heritage.

A HUGE

Tulip Time was especially exciting for Pella’s new residents, some of which rode the Mussel float with Positively Pella for Friday’s afternoon parade.
