No Needles Slouchy hat This is a full description of how to join finger knitted strips to make a circle or tube. The instruction for finger knitting is the photos only, if you need a more detailed description of finger knitting you can download the companion pattern. The No Needles Scarf at ravelry.com. The first numbers are for an adult hat/the blue numbers are for a non-slouchy toque for an adult or for a child size hat. Materials: One ball of bulky weight yarn (or two strands of worsted weight yarn) and your fingers. No needles & no gauge.
Abbreviations: PF= pointer finger MF= middle finger RF= ring finger bf= baby finger Cast on: ……………………………………………………………………................ Knit:
And Wrap:
Right side:
The knit & wrap (one row) when repeated make a narrow strip of knitting. Continue knit & wrap until you have a strip long enough to fit loosely around your head. It should be about 40/30 rows long. (These numbers are approximate only; it should be about 11/4 / 1 times loosely around your head.) Wrong side:
Look at the picture of the wrong side of the strip; the top will be referred to as the PF side, the bottom is the bf side.
For the scarf you were zigzagging for the hat you will be spiraling around.
When making the circular join you need to be very careful you have not twisted your strip of knitting. Bring the starting point of your strip around in a circle being careful to keep the wrong side facing into the middle and the right side facing out. Pick up the first stitch on the PF side and place it on your bf. Wrap fingers (under MF, over RF, around bf, under RF, over MF, and around PF.) Knit lifting the 2sts on the bf, over the wrap. Then knit the RF, MF, & PF in that order. Repeat with the next stitch on the PF side. Continue spiraling around and around for 7/6 times around If you are making an adult non-slouchy toque, omit the brim and proceed to finishing steps. Hat Brim: You need to make a decrease of sorts to make a narrower brim. Put a marker on the PF side, this is the point you will be decreasing to. For the next round you will lift 2 sts from the edge on to your bf, (kind of a “K2tog”) join the next stitch. (Join 2sts, join 1st,) repeat, working your way around to the marker. You have now decreased the length of your round by one third; you should have about 27/20 rows in the round. Move the marker again to the PF side and work one last time around without decreasing. The hat brim is now two strips wide. Finishing: Take the stitch off the bf and place it onto the RF, lift the RF stitch over the bf stitch.
Lift the next stitch on the edge of the hat onto the RF, and wrap, under the MF, around the RF, over the MF, and around the PF, Knit.
Repeat the process with the MF remembering to join to the edge of the hat after the decrease.
Repeat the process again with the PF and join to the edge of the hat one last time. You should have one stitch left, break the yarn and feed the tail through the last stitch. Closing the Top: The starting strip is the top of the hat. Using a yarn needle or crochet hook pull the starting tail through all the stitches on the bf side of the starting strip, pull it tight and knot it off, this closes the top of the hat. Weave in the ends and your done.
Have Fun!! ~Lori Frejek~ P.S. You can make a cowl/neck scarf if you leave the top open and work fewer rounds.
