NADAME

UKIYO NO ENISHI KAGIRI KITE WAKARETE YUKISHI NORI NO TOMO HOTOKE NO MIMAYE NI SACHI ARAN NAMIDA NO UCHI NI NADAME ARI.

CONSOLATION (NADAME)

The ties to this “floating world” having reached their limit, A friend in the Dharma had died. But, even amidst tears, we are consoled by the assurance Of our friend’s happiness in the presence of the Buddha

NAGEKI KANASHIMU YONI WAKARE, TANOSHIKI KUNI NI ARE MASHITE; KUSHIKI HOTOKE TO NARINU RAN, NAGEKI NO UCHI NI NADAME ARI.

Having departed from this world Of sadness and sorrow, To be born in the Land of Joy as a Buddha, There is consolation in the midst of sorrow.

TE ASHI NO UGOKI TAENURE DO, KONO MI O SUTETE KAGIRI NAKI; CHIKARA ARU MI TO NARINU RAN, NAMIDA NO UCHI NI NADAME ARI.

The limbs can no longer move, The physical body discarded, The body of unlimited power is attained. Even amidst tears, we are consoled.

NIKU NO MANAKO WA TOZURU TOMO, TAENARU NORI NO MANAKO MOTE; WARERA GA MADOI O MIRU ARAN, NAGEKINO UCHI NI NADAME ARI.

Our friend’s mortal eyes are closed forever. But with the eyes of the Dharma Our friend looks upon this gathering. Thus, there is consolation in the midst of sorrow.
