Fendt, a brand known for superior quality and technological excellence, has been one of the best selling tractor brands in Germany for several years. – As a supplier of premium tractors, we appreciate quality and superior performance in tyres also. When the Nokian TRI 2 was launched a few years ago, we at Fendt immediately understood the benefits of this concept. It didn’t take us long to put this tyre into use in our work machinery used for street and road maintenance, says Fritz Obermaier, Sales Director Special Applications at ACGO Fendt. He says customers prefer the Nokian TRI 2 especially in municipal road maintenance work, but also in other uses, where their main operating area includes streets and paved roads. Tyres that have a clear impact on performance Tyre economy is a major factor especially to professional users. Tractor operators appreciate also the superb driving comfort the TRI 2 tyres offer. Taking novelty tyres on a European tour
Profiteam Holzer, a contracting company owned by Austrian brothers Thomas and Jakob Holzer, specialises in clearing forest roads, crushing stumps and rocks, and levelling terrain after harvesting. In summer 2009, Profiteam Holzer took its massive Fendt tractors and the new tyres of the Nokian Forest Rider product line on a unique tour of Europe. – We performed demonstrations on road maintenance jobs such as scarifying, milling and planing. People will not believe until they see for themselves just how easily and effectively roads can be cleared, even in difficult terrain, and how smoothly the machinery and equipment work, even on the northern gravel roads, Thomas Holzer says. Driving comfort a daily topic During the tour, men, machinery and tyres were put to the test, and driving comfort was a daily topic. – Nokian Forest Riders offer far better driving comfort than the tyres we’ve used before. The tyres roll lightly on paved roads, and there’s no bouncing, which is exceptional, and significantly improves driving comfort. Liquid ballasting is used to increase machine stability. It is recommended to use professional tyre outlets to carry out the filling procedure. Special equipment and water permeable valves are required. In liquid and salt ballasting, use tubes to prevent rims from rusting.
Note! If a filler other than liquid is used (i.e. polyurethane), tyre warranty does not apply. Water ballasting 75 % of tyre volume is filled. Amounts listed in the table below.
Notice! Since ty re has a ir only 25 % of the original volum inflation e, regular pressur e checks are high ly recomm ended.
Water and salt ballasting The addition of salt will prevent freezing. 75% of tyre volume is filled with the proportions given in the table below. The salt / water solution is calculated at a temperature of -30 ºC / -22 ºF. Normal commercial salt (CaCl2), 77% purity, is used. Any additional salt will not necessarily dissolve in water. The remaining tyre volume is inflated to the recommended inflation pressure.

Ground contact areas Contact area on hard surface The deflection takes place only on the tyre and not at all on the ground. The values in the table are valid at the nominal load and air pressure conditions.
Contact area on soft soil The deflection takes place mainly on the ground: the tyre sinks 15% of its diameter into ground, but the deflection will recover to half of the original value. It is impossible to compare actual measurements in different places, but comparison between different tyre sizes is possible with the help of the table below. Compared to the corresponding standard dimension TRI 2 tyre commonly gives an appr. 5 –10% larger contact area. 65 series tyres will give an approximately 20 – 30% larger area compared to corresponding sizes with a normal section.

Chains It is recommended to use chains only for short periods at a time. Chains shorten the tyre lifetime. Nokian Heavy Tyres limited warranty doesn’t cover any damages made by accessories including the use of chains. The use of chains comes into question when extreme conditions require additional grip. Then it is recommended to use chains only at low speeds and remove them when they are not needed anymore (i.e. road transit). Before installing chains inspect them for sharp edges or welding burs. Ensure that the chains are at the right tightness. Chains too loose can slip on the tyre and cause excessive wear. It is important to check that no chain rings are broken or that no individual rings have turned so that calks cut into the tyre. Calks can cut into the tyre also when chains are severely worn and over stretched.

7.15.2
Mounting tyres on four wheel drive tractors The mounting of tyres on a four wheel drive tractor must be done with great care in order to produce the best driving results and maintain the tyres’ service life. Generally, the actual rolling circumference of a front tyre should be 1 – 4 % higher than the rolling circumference calculated using the gear ratio. Excessive traction in the front tyres can cause quick wear and reduce mileage, while insufficient traction in the front tyres will make the tractor more difficult to steer. Check the manual of the tractor in question for detailed instructions on the calculation of rolling circumferences (gear ratio). When changing the tyre size or type, always check the relationship between the rolling circumferences and make sure that the combination is within the limits given by the manufacturer.
Examples of the calculation The basis for the calculation is the gear ratio between the front and rear axle, with which the rolling circumference of the required front tyre can be calculated. Example 1: Calculating the rolling circumference of front tyres Tyre size

The selected tyre 16.9R28 TRI has a rolling circumference (4140 mm < 4222 mm < 4303 mm) which is within the limit given by the manufacturer. The front tyre’s traction is 4222 / 4099 = 1.030, i.e. 3.0%. Example 2: Switching to TRI 2 tyres on the above mentioned machine Gear ratio: 1.329. The target is 1 – 5% traction for the front tyre. The control calculation must be verified. It must be noted as well that the TRI 2 and TRI tyres have a different rolling circumference than a correspondent tyre with a lug pattern. Tyre size

The selected tyre 440/80R28 has a rolling circumference (4202 mm < 4266 mm < 4368 mm) which is within the limit given by the manufacturer. The front tyre’s traction is 4266 / 4160 = 1.025, i.e. 2.5%. The methods above can be used to check the suitability of new tyres when mounting them on a tractor with a known gear ratio. However, if this vital information is not available, you should contact the tractor’s manufacturer or importer.

Liquid ballasting is used to increase machine stability. It is recommended to use professional tyre outlets to carry out the filling procedure. Special equipment and water permeable valves are required. In liquid and salt ballasting, use tubes to prevent rims from rusting.
Note! If a filler other than liquid is used (i.e. polyurethane), tyre warranty does not apply. Water ballasting 75 % of tyre volume is filled. Amounts listed in the table below.
Notice! Since ty re has a ir only 25 % of the original volum inflation e, regular pressur e checks are high ly recomm ended.
Water and salt ballasting The addition of salt will prevent freezing. 75% of tyre volume is filled with the proportions given in the table below. The salt / water solution is calculated at a temperature of -30 ºC / -22 ºF. Normal commercial salt (CaCl2), 77% purity, is used. Any additional salt will not necessarily dissolve in water. The remaining tyre volume is inflated to the recommended inflation pressure.

Ground contact areas Contact area on hard surface The deflection takes place only on the tyre and not at all on the ground. The values in the table are valid at the nominal load and air pressure conditions.
Contact area on soft soil The deflection takes place mainly on the ground: the tyre sinks 15% of its diameter into ground, but the deflection will recover to half of the original value. It is impossible to compare actual measurements in different places, but comparison between different tyre sizes is possible with the help of the table below. Compared to the corresponding standard dimension TRI 2 tyre commonly gives an appr. 5 –10% larger contact area. 65 series tyres will give an approximately 20 – 30% larger area compared to corresponding sizes with a normal section.

Chains It is recommended to use chains only for short periods at a time. Chains shorten the tyre lifetime. Nokian Heavy Tyres limited warranty doesn’t cover any damages made by accessories including the use of chains. The use of chains comes into question when extreme conditions require additional grip. Then it is recommended to use chains only at low speeds and remove them when they are not needed anymore (i.e. road transit). Before installing chains inspect them for sharp edges or welding burs. Ensure that the chains are at the right tightness. Chains too loose can slip on the tyre and cause excessive wear. It is important to check that no chain rings are broken or that no individual rings have turned so that calks cut into the tyre. Calks can cut into the tyre also when chains are severely worn and over stretched.

Mounting tyres on four wheel drive tractors The mounting of tyres on a four wheel drive tractor must be done with great care in order to produce the best driving results and maintain the tyres’ service life. Generally, the actual rolling circumference of a front tyre should be 1 – 4 % higher than the rolling circumference calculated using the gear ratio. Excessive traction in the front tyres can cause quick wear and reduce mileage, while insufficient traction in the front tyres will make the tractor more difficult to steer. Check the manual of the tractor in question for detailed instructions on the calculation of rolling circumferences (gear ratio). When changing the tyre size or type, always check the relationship between the rolling circumferences and make sure that the combination is within the limits given by the manufacturer.
Examples of the calculation The basis for the calculation is the gear ratio between the front and rear axle, with which the rolling circumference of the required front tyre can be calculated. Example 1: Calculating the rolling circumference of front tyres Tyre size
