PLEASE READ BEFORE USING YOUR NEW ®

PERFORMATHERM THERMOMETER

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE Since PerformaTherm® thermometers react very quickly to changes in temperature being measured, it is important that when running the liquid from a higher temperature to a lower temperature (in the down direction) you do not surpass a rate greater than 20° per minute. When going from a lower to a higher temperature there is no restriction on rate of rise. PerformaTherm® thermometers react to temperature similarly to mercury thermometers. Once at desired temperature, leave thermometer in medium being tested three minutes before reading.

ICE POINT READINGS Place the thermometer in a beaker of room temperature water. GRADUALLY add chopped ice to the water so that the liquid moves no faster than 20° per minute. As the liquid approaches the Ice Point, then place the thermometer directly into a prepared ice bath. Allow the thermometer to remain in the ice bath three minutes before reading temperature.

RE-JOINING LIQUID SEPARATIONS All thermometers, including PerformaTherm®, experience occasional separations, especially during transit. In order to obtain true and accurate readings; please follow the re-joining instructions below that apply to your thermometer. The particular identification will be found on the back of your PerformaTherm® thermometer. S62C & S62F This low-range thermometer is normally joined in one of the two upper chambers. If the separation is in the lower part of the scale, run the liquid down (no faster than 20° per minute) using dry ice and alcohol. When all the liquid is in the bulb, tap the bulb gently so the separations rejoin. Allow the thermometer to stand at room temperature while the liquid rises. DO NOT TOUCH THE BULB WITH YOUR HAND AS THIS MAY CAUSE THE BULB TO BREAK! Allow thermometer to reach room temperature before using. If the separation is below the first chamber above the scale, the liquid must be run up into the chamber and the thermometer tapped gently until the separations are joined. If the separation is slightly above the first chamber, dip the bulb into plain chopped ice until all liquid is in the chamber. Continue to tap the thermometer until the liquid is at the bottom of the bottom chamber. SLOWLY run the liquid in the bore into the chamber (tapping the Page 1 of 2

bulb, if needed, to keep the liquid in the chamber at the bottom of the chamber). When both liquids meet, tap the thermometer gently until they join. Allow the thermometer to reach room temperature before using. If the separation is between the chambers, using regular chopped ice, bring the liquid slowly into the lower chamber and join the two liquids following the instructions above. If the separation is in the top chamber, prepare a cup of boiling water and a cup of warm water. Place the TOP of the thermometer, including the top chamber, into boiling water for at least two minutes—until the liquid joins together into the bottom of the chamber. Now, place the thermometer’s bulb into the warm water so the liquid in the bore rises and joins together with the separation in the top chamber. Gentle tapping may be required to re-join. Maintain the thermometer in warm water and allow to cool naturally until it reaches the lower chamber temperature. S63C & S63F This low range thermometer may be joined in the bulb or the top chamber. If the separation is below the top chamber, slowly draw the liquid down into the bulb using a mixture of dry ice and alcohol. When all the liquid is in the bulb, tap the thermometer gently. This should cause the separation to join. Allow the thermometer to warm up naturally to room temperature before using. DO NOT TOUCH THE BULB WITH YOUR HAND AS THIS COULD CAUSE THE BULB TO BREAK. If the separation is in the top chamber, prepare a cup of boiling water and a cup of warm water. Place the TOP of the thermometer, including the top chamber, into boiling water for at least two minutes until the liquid joins together in the bottom of the chamber. Now place the thermometer into the warm water so the liquid in the bore rises and joins together with the separation in the top chamber. Gentle tapping may be required to re-join. Maintain the thermometer in warm water and allow to cool naturally until it reaches room temperature. S64C & S64F, S65C & S65F, S66C & S66F These three ranges can be joined the same as previously explained. They each have a contraction chamber between the ice point and the first line and a chamber at the top of the thermometer. If the separation is between the bulb and ice point, draw the liquid into the bulb using a mixture of dry ice and alcohol. When the liquid is in the bulb, tap the thermometer gently until the liquid is joined. Allow the thermometer to warm to room temperature naturally. DO NOT TOUCH THE BULB WITH YOUR HAND AS THIS COULD CAUSE THE BULB TO BREAK. If the separation is between the contraction chamber and the top line of the thermometer range, draw the liquid down into the bottom of the contraction chamber using either a mixture of dry ice and alcohol or chopped ice. Warm the bulb so the two liquids join together. Allow the thermometer to cool down to room temperature naturally. If the separation is above the scale or in the top chamber, prepare a cup of boiling water and a warm water bath. Place the TOP of the thermometer, including the top chamber, into boiling water for at least two minutes until the liquid joins together into the bottom of the chamber. Place the thermometer into the warm bath (bulb down) so the liquid in the bore rises and joins together with the separation in the top chamber. Gentle tapping may be required to re-join. Maintain the thermometer in the warm bath and allow to cool naturally until it reaches room temperature.
