Species of the Day: Northern Sportive Lemur The Northern Sportive Lemur, Lepilemur septentrionalis, is listed as ‘Critically Endangered’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened SpeciesTM. This small, arboreal primate is restricted to the very northernmost parts of Madagascar, and has a fragmented population of probably no more than 100 individuals. Geographical range

Like much of the native fauna of Madagascar, habitat loss presents the greatest threat to the Northern Sportive Lemur, with the felling of trees for charcoal production greatly reducing the area of forest available to this species. In spite of being officially protected, this lemur is also hunted for food. With the entire population occurring on unprotected land, this species has an extremely uncertain future. There is some hope that further survey work will reveal the presence of previously unrecorded subpopulations in other forest patches.
