Setting the Stage: 2011 football was officially ushered in last weekend, and the Wolves responded with a convincing 30-17 win over cross-border rival Southwest Minnesota State. Now 1-0 for the first time under secondyear head man Tom Dosch and for the first time since the 2005 season, the Wolves now begin the 2011 NSIC slate this weekend, traveling to Mankato, Minn. to take on the Minnesota State Mavericks. Last Meeting: MSU came into Aberdeen in the second week of the season ranked 18th in the country last year to spoil the Wolves’ home opener 21-14. The Wolves scored a game-tying TD early in the fourth quarter, but watched the Mavericks score on the first play of their ensuing drive using a 71-yard screen pass to tally the winning touchdown. About Minnesota State: The Mavericks are coming off a stinger of a loss against Northern Michigan in their season-opener last weekend. NMU scored on a fourth-and-one play that went for 28 yards and six points with 5:30 left to play to break a 24-all tie. The Wildcats then picked off a Jon Daniels pass in the endzone to thwart any late-game Maverick heroics and preserve their win. Head Coach Todd Hoffner: Hoffner is in his fourth season at the helm of the MSU program and owns a 25-11 record with the Mavericks. He led the team to NCAA playoff appearances in his first two seasons (2008 and 2009). Series History: The Mavericks own a 4-1 all-time series record against the Wolves. NSU won the first ever meeting back in 1971 (16-14) with MSU taking wins in 1980 (38-12), 1981 (17-7) and 2010 (21-14).

The Wolves opened the 2005 season with a 60-13 drubbing of Mayville State in Aberdeen. Senior Class: The Wolves feature 17 seniors on the 2011 roster. MSU vs NSU Notes: • Neither team had a player break the 100-yard threshold either on the ground or through the air in their season openers last weekend. Top Rushers NSU: Aaron Mayo (9 carries, 51 yards)* MSU: LaMark Brown (10 carries, 54 yards) Top Receivers NSU: Mark Hanley (5 catches, 73 yards) MSU: LaMark Brown (6 catches, 66 yards) *Mayo suffered a season-ending knee injury in the fourth quarter.
• MSU converted on 61.1 percent of their third down plays last weekend, while the Wolves were just 2-of-9 in that category. • Dosch vs MSU: 0-1 Switching It Up: • After going through spring workouts and fall camp, no less than three players have switched sides of the ball for the 2011 season. Sophomore Matt Anderson, the Wolves’ third-leading rusher from a year ago, is now a member of the linebacker corps.
2 www.nsuwolvesathletics.com
• Sophomore Trent Ehler and redshirt freshman Spencer Flakus have also moved from defensive line to the tight end slot. Ehler appeared in six games, making two tackles last season. • Senior Zak Kjolsing has played a variety of positions, including cornerback and wide receiver, during his NSU career. He took most of his reps at running back in fall camp, and is listed as a back-up on this week’s 2-deep. • Giveaway/Takeaway: The Wolves played one of their cleaner games of recent, forcing the Mustangs into three turnovers, all on interceptions. SMSU also fumbled the ball three times, but recovered all three. NSU, meanwhile, did not throw an interception or fumble the ball. That +3.00 mark in the turnover margin is third best in the NSIC after the first week of play.
• Airing the Dirty Laundry: The Wolves were the third least-penalized team in the league in Week 1, drawing just four flags worth 35 total yards. • Total Offense: The Wolves got the win over SMSU on Thursday despite giving up nearly 100 more yards in total offense to the Mustangs. Pass Rush Total NSU 183 130 313 SMSU 213 194 407 OFFENSIVE NOTEBOOK Quarterbacks: • Senior quarterback Nick Wanner was an efficient 10-of12 for 183 yards through the air against SMSU in the season opener. The 183 yards were more than enough for Wanner to reach the 1,000-yard plateau in his career. He is now 106-of-170 for 1,068 yards as a Wolf. • Wanner was also the top quarterback in the league last week, racking up a pass efficiency of 238.9, more than 30 points better than UMC’s A.J. Barge. • The Wolves are carrying four quarterbacks on the roster, headlined by returning senior Nick Wanner. The other three QB’s include redshirt freshman Jared Jacobson and a pair of true freshmen in Shane Erickson and Brock Wieber. Erickson and Wieber will likely redshirt. Running Backs: • It would take a career-best season, but senior tailback Chad Morrison is also within striking range of a 1,000-
WOLVES
yard plateau of his own. Morrison entered the season with 602 career rushing yards and added 19 more on Thursday, giving him 621 total career yards. Morrison’s previous season high was 343 during his sophomore campaign. • True freshman running back Aaron Mayo carried the ball nine times for 51 yards and a touchdown in his collegiate debut on Thursday, but suffered a dislocated knee in the drive following his TD score. Mayo, who also had two catches for 29 yards, is unlikely to return to the field this season. • Junior Kristin James had 12 carries for 38 yards in his NSU debut. James also earned the start in the backfield for the Wolves. • Redshirt freshman Ben Jastram had three carries for seven yards and an 11-yard reception in his first taste of collegiate action. Receivers: • Quarterback Nick Wanner completed 10 passes to four different receivers on Thursday, two of whom were running backs. Half of those balls went to junior Mark Hanley, who racked up 73 yards receiving and another 11 in kick returns, giving him 84 all-purpose yards on the day.
• Chris Morton hauled in a 59-yard pass - the longest of the season by a Wolf to date - and narrowly missed his first career TD. Morton took a pass from Wanner on the first play from scrimmage after a Mustang kick-off out of bounds gave the Wolves the ball at the 40 and took it all the way to the SMSU 1-yard line before being hauled down from behind. Tight Ends: • Sophomore Trent Ehler earned his first career start at the tight end slot against SMSU. Ehler did not catch any passes in that game. • Senior Mike Haderlie was a target of Wanner’s in the third quarter, but a 28-yard reception by the senior was nullified by a penalty. O-Line: • Keith Mayer takes over at center after backing up senior allconference performer Mike Zerr last season. • Senior Jim Green, a returning All-NSIC North selection from 2010, is the starting veteran of the offensive line. DEFENSIVE NOTEBOOK Returners: • The Wolves return their top four tacklers from last season and six of their top seven. Senior Mike Bogdanovich had 66 total stops from his middle linebacker position, while defensive backs Logan Dosch (65), Marquis Mulkey (65) and Matt Racowschi (48) also return to anchor the defense. • Last season’s defenive line returns in 2011 largely intact.

Starting linemen Mason Thorstad, Dan Bather and Lincoln Smith are all back, as are linebackers Mike Tuch, Mike Bogdanovich, Hanipale Seuga and Logan Fahnhorst.
Linebackers: • Inside linebacker Mike Bogdanovich was all over the field for the Wolves on Thursday. The senior led the team with 11 tackles, seven of which were solo and three of which went for a Mustang loss of yardage. Bogdanovich also batted down one Tyler Peschong pass attempt and snagged a second one for a nine-yard interception return that set up the Wolves’third touchdwon of the game in the third quarter. • Bogdanovich was also one of just four players in the league to record 11 or more tackles in Week 1. • Outside linebacker Logan Fahnhorst, who missed the final two games of the season with a broken leg last season, returned in style in 2001. Fahnhorst was in on four tackles, one of which was a ringing quarterback sack in the fourth quarter, which led to a Mustang fumble. • Senior Tony Bock missed all of fall camp with a foot injury. Defensive Backs: • The Wolves had six pass break-ups and three interceptions on Thursday, holding the Mustangs to a 19-of-38 effort through the air. The three interceptions marked the second straight time the Wolves have intercepted the Mustangs three times in a game. • Redshirt freshman Ryan Weybrecht snagged his first career interception on Thursday. • Senior safety Matt Racowschi had nine tackles on Thursday, one shy of his career high 10, recorded against Bemidji State last season. • Marquis Mulkey was also one shy of his career-high tackle benchmark, finishing Thursday’s win with seven stops. SPECIAL TEAMS NOTEBOOK Punters/Kickers: • Junior Felipe Alfaia was good on his first career attempt at a field goal, nailing a 39-yarder in windy conditions on Thursday. Alfaia was also 3-for-4 on PAT attempts. • Redshirt freshman Evan Nolte made his NSU debut in the second half, taking over the kick-off duties in that half. • Alex Alvarez, a junior transfer from Riverside CC, punted three times for a 47.0-yard average before getting injured on a blocked punt. He did not return to the game, but is likely to play on Saturday.

Tom Dosch
WOLVES
Head Coach • Second Season Career record: 28-26
The 26th football coach in Wolves football history, Tom Dosh, enters his second year at
the helm of the Wolves and 19th year of collegiate coaching. Prior to his hiring, Dosch had spent the past two seasons at Southern Illinois University, overseeing the inside linebackers and special teams for the Salukies, who won the Missouri Valley Conference title both years. SIU qualified for the NCAA Division I-Football Championship Sub-Division (FCS) playoffs in both 2008 and 2009, finishing the 2008 season ranked eighth in the nation. The Salukies were also ranked No. 1 in two national polls at the conclusion of the 2009 season. Prior to his time at SIU, he compiled a 25-17 record in four seasons as the head coach at Jamestown College. Under his direction, the Jimmies qualified for the NAIA playoffs twice and were ranked as high as sixth in the nation in 2007. He also coached players to 14 All-America honors and 18 Academic All-America accolades in those four seasons. Before taking over at Jamestown, Dosch spent eight years as the defensive line/outside linebackers coach at the University of North Dakota. The Sioux won five North Central Conference titles (1993-94, 1999, 2001 and 2003) and made two national title game appearances (2001 and 2003) in that span, winning the Division II national crown in 2001. Dosch was also a graduate assistant for the Sioux for the 1993-94 seasons. All told, the Sioux compiled a record of 97-27 with 20 all-conference picks and nine All-Americans in his ten seasons on staff. A 1992 graduate of Dickinson State University, Dosch was a 4-year letter-winner and a 2-year starter and is a current member of the school’s Hall of Fame. He also earned two letters as a member of the basketball squad. Following his playing career, he spent the 1991 season as the wide receivers coach for Dickinson State. Dosch’s teams – as a player, head or assistant coach – have won 12 conference championships and advanced to the national playoffs 14 times, including two national title games. He has also compiled a 185-64 record in games in which he has been involved in some capacity. Dosch’s family has some familiarity with the university including his father, Al Dosch, who is a 1969 graduate of Northern State. He retired as the winningest high school football coach in North Dakota history with a record of 229-61-4. He and his wife, Tina, have a 6-year-old daughter named Lauren and 4-year-old son named Matthew.
