In   total,   the   NWT   population   fell   by   155   persons   between   July   1,   2010   and   July   1,   2011.   The   components   of   natural   increase   consisted   of   730   births   and   218   deaths,   resulting   in   a   net   increase  of  512  persons.  Inter-‐provincial  migration  accounted  for  2,325  persons  moving  into  the   Northwest   Territories   from   other   provinces   and   territories,   while   2,988   persons   moved   away,   representing   a   net   loss   of   663   persons.   Internationally,   there   was   a   net   out-‐migration   of   4   persons  who  moved  out  of  the  NWT.  The  magnitude  of  net  out-‐migration  was  the  highest  it  has   been  in  the  past  5  years.

2011-024 ISSN-0827-3545

-‐  2  -‐   In   terms   of   quarterly   growth,   the   NWT   population   increased   by   129   persons   between   April   1,   2011   and   July   1,   2011.   The   increase   in   population   was   the   result   of   a   natural   increase   of   131   persons  and  a  net  inter-‐provincial  migration  of  24  persons.  The  increase  was  slightly  offset  by  a   net   loss   of   26   international   migrants.   This   was   the   first   quarter   with   positive   net   inter-‐provincial   migration  after  three  consecutive  quarters  of  negative  net  migration.       Statistics   Canada   jointly   released   the   total   population   estimates   along   with   the   corresponding   age   and   sex   breakdowns   for   each   of   the   provinces   and   territories.   The   population   pyramid   portrays   that   the   NWT   population   aged   considerably   between   July   1,   1991   and   July   1,   2011   (Figure  1).  The  decrease  in  the  number  of  children  reflects  a  decline  in  the  birth  rate,  while  the   increase  in  the  older  age  groups  is  indicative  of  improvements  in  life  expectancy.  The  aging  of   the  NWT  population  is  also  apparent  by  an  increase  in  the  median  age,  as  it  rose  from  26.9  to   31.8   years   over   the   past   20   years.   However,   the   NWT   population   remains   relatively   young   compared  to  Canada,  as  the  median  age  at  the  national  level  was  39.9  years.
