Northwood Monthly

October 2016

.

A message from Mrs. Bechtold... We are wrapping up what has been a fantastic first quarter of the 16-17 school year. Many of our students have been on their first field trip, we’ve had special guests, and we’re participating in our Fall service project: Socktober! As we gear up for second quarter, please continue to stay involved in your child’s educational experience by asking about their day, getting involved in PTO, and staying in communication with his/her teacher.

Parent Teacher Conferences will take place on Friday, October 14. If you haven’t already signed up for a time, please contact your child’s teacher. Fall Break for students is October 14-21. School will resume on Monday, October 24. If you have questions or need help with anything, please do not hesitate to contact me via email at erin.bechtold@moore svilleschools.org or call at 317-831-9216 ext. 2728.

Every Day Counts! Regular attendance in elementary school helps establish a pattern for the rest of the school career. Please show him/her that school comes first by trying to keep days off for illnesses and family emergencies. Also, schedule routine doctor and dentist appointments for after school or over school breaks. Thank you!

Parent Portal: Strategies for Parents and Children at Home Here are some great tips from an article from Edutopia called: “Engaging Parental Support for Smarter Thinking” By Dr. Donna Wilson and Marcus Conyers (October 3, 2016) Encourage parents to use these strategies at home to reinforce what students are learning in the classroom.

Be the learner you want your child to be. Learning doesn’t have to stop at graduation. Show them ways that you learn throughout your daily life.

Learn out loud. Take advantage of opportunities to teach them by modeling such as when you encounter a big word or a problem you’re not quite sure how to solve OR that they can help solve.

Organize a space and time for studying and reading at home. With your child, find a

space that is quiet and free of distractions that can help them focus on getting their work done well!

You can find these and more helpful tips with the full article listed above at : http:// www.edutopia.org/blog/parentalsupport-for-smarter-thinkingdonna-wilson-marcus-conyers
