It should be noted that, going forward, membership numbers will be reported as the peak number in a given fiscal year, as opposed to years past, which were reported as of July 31. PRESIDENT’S REPORT President Don Prittie reflected on the strategic visioning process the association went through in 2015, which paved the way for the brand development and web design that took place in 2016. The new web platform and social media channels are tools to help the association promote boating and get more people on the water. The Boating BC Conference had another successful year and continues to grow. There are a few issues that the association focused on in 2016, and will continue to tackle going forward, these include loss in water access for boaters and property lease rate increases for marina operators.

Boating BC Annual General Meeting January 19, 2017 abandoned vessels, removing barriers for foreign vessels visiting Canada, access to national parks and opportunities to profile boating in the tourism sector and with Heritage Canada. Boating BC positioned itself in opposition of the closure of the boat ramps in West Vancouver at Ambleside Park, as well as the drastic rate increases imposed on member marinas by the Nanaimo Port Authority. Access to water will continue to be an issue the association will represent in 2017. Boating BC continued to work with industry partners on beneficial projects in 2016. These included the new Discover Boating Safe Boating App and the 2015 Economic Impact Study, which will be distributed to members in the coming months.

SECTOR REPORTS Association of Bareboat Charters & Sailing Schools (ABCSS) Ian MacPherson, President of ABCSS, reported that the charter industry is doing well, however fleets are aging and decreasing in size. There is a strong number of American and European tourists booking in the region. The sailing school sector is struggling and the ABCSS will be working to make improvements and attract more sailing students going forward. BC Yacht Brokers Association (BCYBA) Bruce White, BCYBA Liaison, reported that membership numbers are holding strong at 103 individual members and 38 corporate members. The brokers are reporting that 2016 was one of their strongest years on record for with upwards of $125 million in used boat sales for the year. BCYBA looks forward to another prosperous year in 2017. Marinas Michael Short reported on the need for consistent marina water lot valuation policies, as reflected in the issues marinas are facing with the Nanaimo Port Authority. The sector continues to work towards resolving issues surrounding logs and dead heads in local waterways. The partnership between the marina sector group and the Association of Marina Industries continues to be beneficial. The Intermediate Marina Manager course will be offered in Seattle in 2017, marking the first time it has been available in the Pacific Northwest region.

VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW REPORT Linda Waddell reported that this is CBSI’s fourteenth year working on behalf of Boating BC to produce the boat show and believes this is the best it has ever looked. It is their mission at CBSI to make the show better each year. 2017 marks the fullest the show has ever been, with sold out space and a small waitlist. Laura Ballance Media Group have developed an exceptional marketing program and the boat show has been featured extensively in the news and local media. At the in-water show at Granville Island, there are over 80 boats on display and all the docks have been connected in order to improve navigation and safety. BC Place expects the construction around the venue to be completed for the 2018 boat show, which will allow CBSI to expedite the move-in schedule 130-10691 Shellbridge Way, Richmond BC V6X 2W8 t: 604-248-8906 f: 604-270-3644 www.boatingbc.ca [email protected]
