FOOD PANTRY BLESSINGS We want to thank you for the food donations that were given for our friends for Thanksgiving. Once again Alva UMC proved that we are the “little church with the big heart”. Also, thanks to all who volunteered their time this past week. CAMPAIGN OF FAITH We are asking you to join together in love, joy, and faith to help the church become DEBT FREE! With God’s help and yours, we are striving to wipe out our loan balance of $106,892.59. Pray about it and ask God what you can do to help.

From the Pastor’s Heart “For unto us a child is born…unto us a son is given…” That’s a promise. A promise fulfilled. We make promises…we “give our word”…and we do it all the time. Can you recall the last time you made a promise? Was it a promise that you were making to a child? Was it a promise to your spouse? Was it a promise made in regard to a business arrangement? Was it a promise made in faith to God? Most of us don’t take promises lightly…and that’s the way it should be! Promise should not be made casually. When we make a promise we have given our word. We have entered into a covenant of sorts with that person. A promise is a serious kind of agreement. To break a promise is to risk losing credibility. Perhaps you can recall someone who made a promise to you and then broke that promise. When that happened you might have been hurt. You may have become angry. And, probably, you have found that you don’t trust that person as much, now that they have broken their promise. Today is the first Sunday of Advent. In our society, this is a time of preparing for Christmas by shopping for presents, going to holiday parties, getting ready for family visits or for holiday travel. It’s also the beginning of the end: the end of an old year. That can mean extra hours of work. That can mean final exams at school. For many of us, this may be the busiest season of the year. In the church, Advent is a time of promise. And Advent is a time for preparing ourselves for the coming of Christ. The scriptures indicate that we live between the first coming of Jesus at Bethlehem and His second coming at some future time. But the Bible also makes this clear: Christ doesn’t come just twice – once in the past and once in the future: Christ comes again and again and again as he comes into our lives and our world. That was and is the promise that God has made to you and to me. Christ has come. Christ is coming. Christ will come again. Starting today, I invite you to look for those places where Christ has come into your life.
