4th GRADE NEWS

“Patience is not the ability to wait, but how you act while   you are waiting.” - Joyce Meyer

What are we learning this month?  In Reading and Social Studies…  4th graders are beginning an  informational (nonfiction)  reading unit. This Nonfiction unit  is going to be all about explorers.  During this unit, students  will review the three text  structures they learned in third  grade (description, comparison,  and sequence/chronological) as  well as learn two new structures  (problem & solution and cause &  effect).

In Writing…  Our 4th graders will be  writing non-fiction  persuasive essays, where  they defend their opinions  using a personal example  and connections to convince  a specific audience.  Students will use their  knowledge of essay  structure to build their  stamina and confidence in  the genre.

In Math…  This month the fourth grade is  working on solving multiplication  problems with 2 digit numbers. We  are focusing on using arrays to help  the students form a good base for  using the standard algorithm.  Students will be working toward  understanding and using the  relationship between multiplication  and division to solve division  problems, while understanding the  meaning and structure of  multiplication and division.  During this unit we ask that  parents practice fluency with their  child. We are pushing our students to  think multiplicatively rather than  additively (ex: 5 groups of 2 is equal  to 5 x 2, instead of 2+2+2+2+2).

In Technology...

In Science…

In Art…  Students are learning about the  Aztecs and the gold jewelry. They are  learning about the architecture of the  pre-Aztecs who lived in Teotihuacan.    In Gym…  The 4th graders will be continuing  circuit training in preparation for  their “Citywide Fitnessgram” test.  Skills to be practiced include jumping  jacks, sit ups, push ups, trunk lifts,  and other fitness related activities.  Let’s work on getting fit and healthy  together!

During the month of November, 4th  grade students will be learning about  Plagiarism and Research through an  Applications project using PowerPoint.  Students will be combining their  background knowledge attained in the  classroom as well as conducting  research about New York Explorers. We  will be starting our Introduction to  Google Apps for Education (GAFE) in the  near future. Please read, sign and return  the Consent Form as soon as possible!  SAVE THE DATE for our 3rd Annual Hour  of Code event on Saturday, December  10th. Don’t forget to visit our website::  http://ps230technology.weebly.com/ for  more information.

Our 4th grade scientists  have begun observing walking  sticks in the science lab! This  will lead to lessons on  interdependence of living  things in their natural  environments. At home, you  can watch National Geographic  documentaries and discuss  how organisms are dependent  on one another. Also, you can  take your child to the public  library and take out books  related to food chains and food  webs. Find out how different  organisms need each other!
