Board Briefs- November 15, 2016 Pledge of Allegiance Prayer I. II.

Roll Call Celebrations:

A. Our Colbert students enjoyed a field trip to the Zoo. They were very well behaved and had a great time. Colbert also had a Fall Festival and students were rewarded attendance incentive tickets for each day they were present in October. The tickets were then used to play games at the festival. Over 400 were in attendance at the Fall Festival. Way to go Colbert! B. MCJROTC continues to stay very busy around the county and have helped out in many various events. They also enjoyed their Military Ball last Saturday evening. The ceremony was amazing and very impressive. Great job- we are very proud of you and of this program. C. KMB students enjoyed various lessons and hands-on activities using pumpkins that used their math, reading, and writing TEKS incorporated. Also, they enjoyed not only their Thanksgiving luncheon, but also honored our many Veterans on Nov. 11. Great and positive comments were heard on how smooth everything went. Thank you Ms. Strolberg and our Child Nutrition Dept. D. DISD Counselors received Mental Health Training Certification with our campus nurses and some SpEd staff. Many of them also attended the Texas Annual Counseling Conference in Dallas and brought back great ideas and ways to help our students of all ages. E. Libraries continue to impact student learning as Mrs. Paula Fielder’s son-in-law visited all campuses for Veterans’ Day. There was a dramatic increase of military books being checked out and our students are being encouraged to read more. At the SFA library, the students enjoyed the Thanksgiving Tree- and left ‘thankful’ notes on its leaves. At KMB library, the students engaged in a discussion over the election process. F. Students from SFA Elementary enjoyed a week of PE ‘Veteran’ Themed activities along with a display organized by Coach (Veteran) Joanna Parsons. Ms. Mobley’s and Ms. Hollaway’s students had Mr. Travis Young as their class’ Keynote Speaker for 4th grade males. The topic was Good Citizens, Good Grades! G. Dayton ISD students and staff were well represented at the annual CASA Super Hero Fun Run last weekend. Many of the WWJH staff members participated and Board Member Larry Wadzeck publicly thanked everyone who helped including the Dazzlers, the MCJROTC, and the Spanish Club. It was a great day, with many of our students and staff members winning medals. H. Pictures of the ERR students voting were shown during celebrations. They (along with many other campuses) had fun participating in the mock election process on Election Day. The ERR kiddos also had an amazing time in their Story Book Character Parade on Halloween. I. Our Personnel Services Department was highlighted for the job that they do recruiting at various job fairs and their training of our substitutes. J. Several WWJH 8th grade students participated last year in “Growing Up in Liberty County” project. Last week, these students, along with their parents and grandparents (and/or honored guests) attended the banquet to celebrate their participation in this county-wide project. They all spoke and presented themselves well. We were proud of them. The WWJH kids also enjoyed their pep rally time silly-stringing the administrators. Also Ms. B. Williams (7th grade) class was also featured showing 100% of her class engaged in academic talk and writing. K. Mrs. Lott, Principal of DAEP/AAEP, has started inviting guest speakers for her campus. The students learn about character education and career choices through the various speakers. L. DISD’s Special Olympics was a huge success! Hats off to Regina Kelsey, Michaelene Morrison, Angie McMillian, and all of the SpEd staff members for organizing and implementing such a great program for our children. Thank you! M. DHS continues to have lots of students participating in various events every weekend. The mock interviews went really well. The 8th graders came over and toured DHS also was deemed a success. In other DHS news, student, Ryan Barnes earned the Speaker’s Gavel Award at the Kingwood Debate Tournament. FFA did a Turkey Trot

Fundraiser, donating food for 25 families this Thanksgiving. Also, the Ag. Classes hosted all 4th graders to the Ag. Adventure Field Day last week. Everyone had a wonderful time. TVE winners were also listed. We are so proud of our DISD students! Congratulations to the Volleyball All-District selections: 1st team: Hannah Waller, 2nd team: Sydney Brown, Honorable Mention: Jayla Pruitt and Paeton Robinson, Academic All-District: Sydney Brown, Sydnee Hebert, Abby Jane Howeth, Emilee Peters, Jayla Pruitt, Calie Thornton, Hannah Waller, and Richayla Young. Way to go ladies. Communications from the Public- There were not any communications from the public. Items for Board Action: The Board unanimously approved the Consent Agenda. The Board unanimously approved TASB Policy FFA (Local) Wellness Policy for Second Reading. This is the update from the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010. The Board unanimously approved TASB Policy Update 105, Affecting (Local) Policies for Second Reading. This updates all of these specific policies as we move from No Child Left Behind to Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Several main policies include: parent and family engagement, records management, teacher and administrators appraisals, special education, district contracts, and prekindergarten grants. The Board unanimously approved Fiscal Year 2015-2016 Audit Report. Mr. Ray Smith gave the report and praised Ms. Tami Pierce and her staff for the job they do for DISD. The Board unanimously approved a resolution that identifies adequate school funding as a priority, opposing any and all proposed legislation related to the provision of school choice vouchers, and repeal of the A-F labeling system. The Board unanimously approved a resolution for school board of trustees’ code of ethics. The Board unanimously approved a purchase over $10,000 for VOIP call manager server and licensing upgrade. The Board unanimously approved a purchase over $10,000 for petroleum storage tank removal project. The Board unanimously approved changed order no. 2 for Dayton High School building addition. Items for Board Information :*( Items for information may become action items.) A. Superintendent’s Report 1. Calendar Update – Mr. Michael Dyer gave an update on how next year’s calendar process is going. He publicly thanked the DEIC members for their commitment to our students and district. 2. Parental Involvement Update – Mr. Michael Dyer started this report with the new federal regulations on ESSA that is requiring more parental involvement starting next school year. In order to get a start on these mandates DISD has already began looking at ways to increase parent and community involvement. Ms. Ana Beltrami spoke next and presented best practices and research over effective parent partnerships. Ana told the Board that not only are we looking at having more events and opportunities for parents to come to our campuses, but that DISD has started going out into the community. She identified 5 local churches that we will be partnering with in some way. She concluded that we are just in the infancy stages of the planning. Mr. Travis Young then finished up the report over the various ways parents can get involved including: PTO, Booster Clubs, Volunteers, attend performances, district-wide events (such as the Bullying, College and Career Night, Worth the Wait, etc.). Dayton ISD recognizes that importance of building relationships and partnerships with parents and community members. 3. Character Building and Bullying Update – Mr. Travis Young gave the report and highlighted at least two events/activities that campuses are doing to enrich, train, and educate our children with on-going Character Education lessons/traits. DISD’s focus this year is to have on-going training and teachable moments over the various character education traits at all levels. B. Associate Superintendent Pierce’s Report 1. 1. Bilingual / ESL Report- Mrs. Abby Cumbie presented the annual report to the Board. Some highlights included: Historical data (total number of LEP students in 2007-08 was 402, today we have 1,016), number of exited students (in 2013-14 was 33, last year was 87), list of professional development offered, breakdown of the TELPAS data and student progress (Bilingual 2014-15 progressing at least 1 was 53%, last year was 60%. ESL progression in 2014-15 was 44% and last year we stayed the same at 44%), etc. Abby also showed the Board all of the various trainings, meetings, and professional development opportunities that the BE/ESL dept has offered and the Board was very impressed. 2. C & I Report- Allen Painter and Shanna McCracken gave an in-depth report over the learning walk data. The Board was very interested, supportive of the C&I dept., and asked lots of questions concerning: struggling teachers, support for teachers, the lack of rigor, teachers who need high expectation for all students, and whole group vs individualized/ student-centered learning, and the importance of student engagement. It was a very good discussion and I appreciate and know that we are blessed to have Board members who are knowledgeable in instructional strategies. 5. Assistant Superintendent Herrera’s Report- Construction Update was given. Mr. Herrera and Sofia (PBK) updated the Board on the DHS construction and also the Support Service Center. VI. Brown and Woodrow Wilson Junior High. 10. The Board unanimously approved adding position of Network Manager and Job Description. 11. The Board unanimously approved the recommendations as presented. Welcome aboard Courtney Clanton, Dana Johnson, and Kaitlin Lawrence (all WWJH teachers). 12. The Board unanimously approved to render a finding that good cause did not exist for a teacher (ERR) to abandon their contract. The district will be notifying SBEC to submit a written complaint of Contract Abandonments. 13. The Board unanimously approved the substitute teachers list as presented. VIII.
