November, 2014 Dear St. Markers, In November, our thoughts often turn to the theme of Thanksgiving, and I want to reflect on several aspects of thanksgiving. As of November 1, I will have completed a year of ministry in your midst. I am grateful for the privilege to serve St. Mark’s, and I admire your many talents and abilities. The many accomplishments of the past year are testimony to your many capacities! Because of where St. Mark’s is located, we can be grateful for the neighborhood of Crescent Hill – a community with a strong identity and rich heritage. A unique blessing for us is the presence and outreach work of United Crescent Hill Ministry, which is celebrating its 40th year of service. As part of the celebration, UCHM is calling on area churches to join in a community Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, November 23rd, hosted by Crescent Hill Baptist Church at 2pm. This will be the Thanksgiving Service for St. Mark’s Church this year – and members of the choir, Organist-Choir Director Josh Duncan and I will all be in attendance. I do hope you will come to this community worship. We at St. Mark’s Church also have so much for which to be thankful. As we look to the future, it is with thanksgiving for those whose dedication and commitment 125 years ago led to the founding of St. Mark’s. And so it was with great excitement and anticipation that the Vestry announced the 125th Anniversary Renovation Campaign for St. Mark’s. It is worthy of your participation as we carry out much needed repairs and upgrades for our roof, kitchen and beautiful pipe organ – all to ensure continued ministry of St. Mark’s in the future. The Stewardship Brunch will be held on Sunday, November 23rd, following our 10am worship, and I ask each and every one of you to attend. I also ask each and every one of you to offer a pledge – both for our 2015 budget year and for our Renovation Campaign. Please consider generous contributions to our ongoing budget support and 125th Anniversary Campaign - out of gratitude for the blessings of St. Mark’s in the past, and a commitment to its ministry and blessings of others in the future.

The Feast of All Saints and Baptism The Church recognizes in its calendar, November 1, as the occasion to remember those who died in the past year, as well as all those faithful departed (previously specifically celebrated on All Souls Day – November 2). All Saints Day is one of the Major Feasts of the Church and is an especially appropriate time for baptism – and here at St. Mark’s we will celebrate the baptism of Claire Elizabeth Marvin!

Churches have been asked to take part in a Community Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, November 23rd at 2pm. Our liturgical leaders (John & Josh & several choir members) will take part in the service, which is hosted by Crescent Hill Baptist Church.

Thanks Conner Malone! Conner is a Boy Scout working to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, and for his Leadership Project he renovated and enhanced our church’s playground. Conner worked with committees and suppliers throughout the spring to get everything arranged – and on the weekend of September 13th everything came together! Here are some pictures of Conner with his parents, and the many workers gathered together.

November’s selection is The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion: A Novel The one and only Fannie Flagg, beloved author of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven, and I Still Dream About You, is at her hilarious and superb best in this new comic mystery novel about two women who are forced to reimagine who they are. Mrs. Sookie Poole of Point Clear, Alabama, has just married off the last of her daughters and is looking forward to relaxing and perhaps traveling with her husband, Earle. The only thing left to contend with is her mother, the formidable Lenore Simmons Krackenberry. Lenore may be a lot of fun for other people, but is, for the most part, an overbearing presence for her daughter. Then one day, quite by accident, Sookie discovers a secret about her mother’s past that knocks her for a loop and suddenly calls into question everything she ever thought she knew about herself, her family, and her future. Sookie begins a search for answers that takes her to California, the Midwest, and back in time, to the 1940s, when an irrepressible woman named Fritzi takes on the job of running her family’s filling station. Soon truck drivers are changing their routes to fill up at the All-Girl Filling Station. Then, Fritzi sees an opportunity for an even more groundbreaking adventure. As Sookie learns about the adventures of the girls at the All-Girl Filling Station, she finds herself with new inspiration for her own life. Fabulous, fun-filled, spanning decades and generations, and centered on a little-known aspect of America’s twentieth-century story, The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion is another irresistible novel by the remarkable Fannie Flagg.

~Musical Musings~ What a fun year it’s been! I still can’t believe I picked up my life and moved to another state. What a ride this has been for me learning the Greater Louisville area and other out-lying parts of Kentucky and Southern Indiana! I want to thank the Adult Parish Choir, first and foremost: this is a fun group of adults that I look forward to seeing on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings. They are a hard-working, dedicated group of people that makes St. Mark’s Church a wonderful place to be and I look forward to the years to come as we work, sing, and pray together. One thing I would like to put on everyone’s radar is a combined service of Christmas Lessons & Carols that the St. Mark’s Choir will take part in on December 21st at St. Thomas Episcopal Church. This special service will take place at 4:00 that Sunday afternoon and will feature the choirs of St. Thomas, St. James (PeeWee Valley), St. James (Shelbyville) and of course our own choir. This service will be very similar to the famed and historical Lessons & Carols service from Kings College, Cambridge England using traditional and new carols. MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW!!! Watch for the December newsletter for the rest of the Advent & Christmas events going on at St. Mark’s, too. There are many other exciting things going on in the life of St. Mark’s as well. We have officially begun our Rector search process and are embarking upon our 125th Anniversary Capital Campaign. There is a line item in the campaign for the organ, too. While this isn’t

a major overhaul, our organ is now 30 years old and is in need of some TLC. First of all, there is 30 years of dirt and dust built up inside pipes and in the chambers; this causes tuning & speech instability for pipes. Inside each flu pipe (that is a pipe without a reed) are pieces of lead called languids (much like our own tongues). These languids are what the wind passes over and causes the sheet of air to vibrate this producing sound. Due to the force of gravity over time, these languids sag causing poor pipe speech, slow speech, or even causes the pipes not to speak at all. Part of this work is to go through (especially the larger pipes) and adjust these languids back up so the pipes speak promptly, in tune, and with a moredesirable tone. Reed pipes, such as Trumpets, Oboes, etc., will be taken apart, cleaned, and regulated as well. Some internal pipes will be turned or even relocated to provide a better tonal-egress and easier access for technicians and tuning. All of this will ensure that our instrument will be around for another 50, 60, or even 100 years to help lead us in worship. If you would like a personal, inside tour of the workings of the Steiner-Reck Organ of St. Mark’s, please let me know. Maybe we should have a parish-wide contest to see who can guess how many pipes are actually in the organ (there are way more than the ones you see in the façade)!

Annual Giving & 125th Anniversary Campaign During the first week of October, the Vestry announced the start of both the fall stewardship campaign as well as a Renovation Campaign in advance of our 125th anniversary! Packets of information have been mailed to all households and addition packets are available in the church office. We will be collecting pledges for both drives on Sunday, November 23rd and will be hosting additional information sessions as follows: Sunday, November 9 – Stewardship Sunday, November 16 – Renovation Sunday, November 23 – Brunch If there are questions about the campaigns, just give the office a call for more information or to schedule a personal visit.
