Salute to 4-H Volunteers
4-H Career Explorations at Cornell University
Cornell Cooperative Extension’s 4-H Youth Development Program is privileged to have wonderful youth and adults who graciously give their time and energy throughout the year to support our program.
June 27-29, 2017 For over 70 years, Cornell Cooperative Extension’s 4-H Youth Development program has conducted a three-day event for youth on the Cornell University campus. The purpose of this program, now called 4-H Career Explorations, is to provide youth with exposure to academic fields and career exploration, to develop leadership skills, to provide hands-on experience in a college setting and to introduce you to Cornell University.
Some volunteers help all year long, running clubs and activities and chaperoning trips. Others give what they can, by supporting us at special events and programs and helping in the office. Regardless of the amount of time a person gives, these wonderful 4-H Volunteers make a world of difference to the Putnam County 4-H Youth Development Program. Salute to Denise Fuchs & the Fuchs Family:
4-H Career Exploration programs allow youth to have fun while learning about science, technology, humanities and… yourself. The event is made up of two grade specific tracts: University U for youth entering grades 8 - 9 and Focus for Teens for youth entering grades 10 - 12.
The Fuchs Family has been involved in the Putnam 4-H program for about the last 6 years. Denise assists as a parent Volunteer with the Teen Action Group and also ‘Chairs’ the Craft Tent at the 4-H Fair. She is a wealth of ideas and information, always thoughtfully putting the kids first. You will often find her husband, Tom, quietly helping behind the scenes, grilling hamburgers at the 4-H BBQ, driving at Golf Cart at the 4-H Fair, or just helping to load and unload supplies at 4-H events throughout the year. Together, they have 3 boys, Christopher, Brian and Eric. Over the past six year, all 3 boys have been members of the Explorers 4-H Club and the Teen Action Group. They also volunteer with the 4-H Grounds Crew each year at the 4-H Fair and continue to assist our Favorite Magic Man, Tony, in his tent during the Fair. This year, Christopher is a Freshman at Washington College in Maryland, so we may not see him as often as we’d like. The Fuchs Family remains involved, offering support and help – with a Smile - whenever called upon! Their support and their service is truly appreciated! Thank you Denise, Tom, Christopher, Brian & Eric!
Space is limited; registration is accepted on a first come, first serve basis, by or before April 1. Scholarships are available. Price: $365 4-H members, $395 non members; includes accommodations, meals classes and transportation. For additional information go to putnam.cce.cornell.edu/4-H

Save the Date Putnam County 4-H Public Presentations Saturday, March 4, 2017 Green Chimneys School *Brewster, NY
Public Speaking – An Invaluable Life Skill What is a 4-H Public Presentation?
How do I start?
A presentation is a method used to communicate an idea by showing and/or telling. It can be a demonstration or a talk that uses posters and other visual aids. A 4-H presentation helps youth learn to:
Research a subject
Organize ideas in a logical order
Be a teacher and practice public speaking skills.
Speakers prepare for presentations by first selecting a topic of interest to them and doing some basic research and preparation to organize and develop a presentation that they can share in front of their 4-H Club and family. 4-H Members then take part in a County-Wide Public Speaking Day, where their presentations are evaluated by Trained Volunteers, who help each young speaker hone and fine tune their presentation skills. Cloverbud members (ages 5-8) are simply applauded for getting up and speaking in front of a group.
There are many different types of presentations, ranging from demonstrations to illustrated talks to interviews. ll 4-H Members are encouraged to give a presentation each year.
Some examples of previous 4-H Presentation Topics have included:
Why are public speaking skills important? Public speaking skills are ranked number one among the most valuable skill sets of professionals. Being able to speak well in front of a group also enhances:
leadership development
self-esteem, self-confidence, and ability to accept feedback
skills for planning, preparation and performance
How to Make Pancakes
Snow Boarding
Dog Grooming
How to Grow Tomatoes
How to Play Field Hockey
Dinosaurs
Horses & Riding
4-H Parents & Club Leaders are encouraged to talk to their 4-H’ers about taking part in 4-H Public Presentations in March 2017. Planning Guides & Sample Evaluation Forms are available at: http://putnam.cce.cornell.edu/4-h-youth/4-hforms
Giving presentations develops many life skills, including the ability to speak in front of a group, organize ideas, and create and use technology and graphics to support the spoken word.
4-H Staff are happy to help you prepare and plan for 4-H Public Presentations! Give us a Call!

STEM Idea of the Month Each month we will provide a project or challenge related to the S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) principals. The ideas are simple with the intention that the leaders or volunteers will use these as a starting point to create a really great activity for the club. This section will also be a sharing center. We want to hear what your club did with the idea and if you have any ideas you would like to share. Please submit what you would like to share to Dena at
[email protected] Hot Air Balloon With this activity youth will discover the power of light, motion, and heat energy. They will explore the heat energy and how it powers a hot air balloon! 5- Tie a 12-inch piece of thread to each corner of the cardboard square.
Materials Paper Pens/ pencils Garbage bags (lightweight) Straws Tape Thread Cereal box "Trick" birthday candles Matches/ lighter Scissors
6- Insert four candles into the holes. You may need to adjust the center of gravity for the cardboard candle holder to hang properly. 7- Connect the candle holder to the balloon's opening with the four threads so that it hangs down below the balloon. Make sure it is about a foot away from the balloon. 8- Light the candles and let it float away!
Instructions
Tip: Be careful not to do this around trees or anything that might catch fire! Make sure to find your balloon and dispose of it so as not to litter.
1- Find a suitable plastic bag. Garbage bags work but need to be lightweight. If you cannot find a light weight trash bag then you can try a plastic grocery bag.
Apply
2- Attach straws together to form a circle with a diameter of about 10 inches. Do this by twisting the end of a straw and inserting it into the end of another straw and so on. Do this without using tape or glue.
Hot air balloons are based on the scientific principle that warmer air rises in cooler air. Since hot air is lighter and less dense than the cool air around the balloon, the heated air causes the whole balloon to rise. When the air inside the balloon cools down, or when the hot air is let out, the balloon goes down. In a real hot air balloon, a gas burner is used to heat the air to a temperature of about 212o F
3- Tape the opening of the bag to the circle of the straws. Use lightweight tape and use it sparingly. 4- Cut a 2-inch square out of the cereal box. Poke four small holes that are equidistant near the center. The holes should be slightly smaller than the candles that will be put in them, for a snug fit.
