November 17, 2016 Luncheon

Lt. Colonel Sam Melvin, Flight Seven’s Adjutant and Vietnam Silver Star recipient is our November luncheon speaker. He entered the Army Air Corps as a Class 53B Aviation cadet. Upon commissioning assigned to fighter training and headed for Korea, but as the Korean War was ending, reverted to F-89 and F- 101 Air Defense Command duty until the Vietnam War unfolded. As a qualified F-101 pilot, trained as a recce pilot and deployed to Tan Son Nhut, Saigon. His mission to Khe-Sagn, the most memorable, earning him the Air Force Silver Star and is the topic of Colonel Melvin’s luncheon talk.

The Order of Daedalians, the National Fraternity of Military Pilots, was organized on 26 March 1934 by a group of World War I commissioned Army pilots to perpetuate the spirit of patriotism, love of country and ideals of self-sacrifice which place service to nation above personal safety or position. Membership is open to pilots (commissioned, warrant officers, USAAF flight officers, and WASPs) of all US armed services and who can be on active duty, retired or have left the service, under honorable conditions, prior to retirement. Help bring a member in the Order, now!

We Dadalians are sincerely appreciative and thank our September Luncheon Speaker, Colonel Bruce Clark, USA (Ret) for accepting our invitation as luncheon speaker and discussing his role as adviser to the civilian leaders of KheSagn during the Korean War. Col Clark was the imbedded principal, coordinating the operations of US Army and Marine forces with Khe Sagh civilian leaders, effectively repelling the North Korean serge of Khe Sagn, January-July 1968.

Four ROTC cadets attended our September luncheon to accept their citations and share their aspirations and plans with us; the factors that inspired them to join their respective college AFROTC commissioning programs. It sure brought back some memories of we Daedalianns of pilot training and commissioning quests some time back. Each cadet shared their individual aspirations and plans in seeking flying and non-flying Air Force careers. Two of the cadet’s military instructors accompanied their students and photographs of the cadets; their instructors and Daedalian sponsor’s are included elsewhere in the Intercom. Our September luncheon speaker, Colonel Bruce Clark USA (Ret) shared a detailed account of his involvement working with the Khe-Sahn Korean civilian inhabitants, coordinating and directing their efforts in concert with imbedded Army and Marine units in repelling the North Korean forces during the siege that had not been widely reported by the media. A bit more on the Khe-Sahn era is in store for our November luncheon attendees as our Flight Seven Adjutant, Lieutenant Colonel Sam Melvin will be our speaker. He will be sharing his involvement in Vietnam as a RF-101 reconnaissance pilot, reconnoitering the Khe-Sahn siege under extremely adverse monsoon conditions, “jinking” around AA fire and cloud shrouded hills that surrounded the city of Khe-Sahn. As indicated in an earlier Interom a field trip to the Reagan Presidential Library was planned and recently completed in mid October. A number of Daedalians were coached to the Presidential Library and for those that have not visited-it is a rather large, impressive facility, chronologically displaying the major historical and significant events of President Reagan’s life. The Actual Air Force One aircraft and Marine One are hangered there and open for inspection. As one meanders though Air Force One’s interior, one finds a uniformed mannequin of Flight Seven’s colleague, Air Force LT Colonel C seated in the aircraft. The Colonel was the president’s Air Force Aide in the 70’s and custodian of the nuclear “football.” Library docents throughout the library are exceptionally informative and gracious hosts. One would be hard pressed to cover the library in one day. We will be going back. Please watch the Intercom for our reengagement tour. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 an armistice between Germany and the Allied nations came into effect. Its anniversary thereafter recognized as Armistice Day. This anniversary was subsequently renamed in 1975 as Veteran’s Day, a day of solemn pride and gratitude by our nation in the heroism of those who served and died in the nation’s services. Show the flag in honor of our Nation’s Hero’s! Lastly, the 8th of November is nigh. Be among those counted and vote. It is not only a right-it’s a duty.
