From our National Vice President-Programming, Allison Bolin: What is Service Learning? How is it different from Community Service? Where did this concept come from? These are all questions that many of us have asked but rarely can pinpoint specific answers. Service learning is not a new term. In fact, the term can be traced as far back as 1990 to the National And Community Service Act, which was enacted during the Clinton Administration. Although, some definitions can be traced back even further. Service learning isn’t just something that is happening in the higher education realm either. Many organizations offer service learning for K-12 students as well. Organizations such as 4H, Jr. Beta, and Key Club are just a few that students can participate in service learning. Our new members are by and large coming into our organization with a wealth of experience with service. They are looking to us to help them continue that experience. “Service-learning is a form of experiential education in which students engage in activities that address human and community needs together with structured opportunities for reflection designed to achieve desired learning outcomes.” (Jacoby, Service-Learning in Higher Education, 1996) By definition, service learning differs from community service because of the structured educational experience that is built around the particular service. The reflection of the experience is also a major difference. In fact, it is through the reflection piece that really makes it a true learning experience. Service learning is best achieved when there is a long term and embedded focus to the project being worked on. Essentially, the learning is what differentiates service learning from community service or volunteerism. Through service learning, a greater understanding and appreciation for giving back can be achieved. In the coming months, Theta Phi Alpha will be developing a comprehensive membership development experience for our members. Service learning will be an important aspect of this experience. As our mission states, we are aiming to advance educational, social and philanthropic interests. The service learning model will allow our membership to help fulfill our mission by giving our members an avenue to learn, come together as a community, and give back to others.
