A very Italian job How digital color from Océ helps Selecta ride the TransPromo growth wave Nicola Muraro, Vice President of Gruppo Selecta, is setting his sights high. He aims to capture market leadership in Italy in one-to-one and TransPromo printing before the end of 2009. Anyone hoping to keep pace will have to move fast. As one of Italy’s leading providers in the burgeoning TransPromo market – and assisted by the leading-edge technology and quality of the Océ JetStream – Selecta is expert at turning the opportunities of digital full-color printing into effective communication for clients.

Exponential growth Selecta has embarked on an ambitious growth program in the color market, with a trajectory that is set to expand the company’s annual color print volumes exponentially over the next few years – beginning with an additional 200 million color pages in 2009. The figures have not been plucked from thin air, though: Selecta is basing projections on the healthy growth forecast for the TransPromo and color printing markets – according to

analysts such as InfoTrends, expansion of up to 90 per cent over the next three years is realistic. “Growth in color printing over the past 12 months has been exponential. The industry volume is up by 550 per cent, and we expect the trend to continue through 2009,” says Muraro, Vice President of Gruppo Selecta. “We expect an additional color volume of 200 million pages in 2009. Our objective is to be market leader in Italy in the one-to-one TransPromo segment by the end of next year.”

applications that enriched transactional data with promotional messages – well before the term TransPromo was coined. Since then, color production costs have spiraled downwards as performance and quality have steadily increased. New inkjet printers such as the Océ JetStream now deliver high speed, superlative quality and lower costs per page, creating huge market opportunities for digital color applications.

An early mover into digital color, Selecta was among the first to recognize the huge opportunities in this market and installed its first sheet-fed toner presses back in 1997. By 2001 the company was already forging ahead with Italy’s first-ever

With print volumes of some 2 billion pages in 2008, Selecta is ideally positioned to exploit these opportunities and promote the business objectives of its own clients at the same time.

Helping clients communicate more effectively Better speed and quality and lower operational costs are swiftly narrowing the gap between digital black & white printing and color. “Full color highvolume transaction printing has now become affordable,” explains Muraro, Vice President of Gruppo Selecta. “ This brings color within the reach of enterprises whose budget constraints might previously have forced them to take the black & white route to communicating with their customers. We’re seeing unprecedented growth in this sector in Italy.” Color invoices and account statements make

communication measurably more efficient and accessible: unlike separate flyers, a message in the transactional document holds attention for longer – people are far more likely to pay attention to the bills they receive. Whereas a promotional flyer, no matter how glossy and expensive, can easily end up in the bin unread. “We could see the trajectory clearly – everything pointed to strong growth of color printing volumes. Within three years, we expect to be printing over half our volume in color. Given that we already print 1.9 billion pages annually, we needed to install print infrastructure that would be powerful and flexible enough to take our business forward into this new growth phase,” says Muraro, Vice President of Gruppo Selecta.

The plan for digital color power

Océ JetStream: the best choice

Selecta was keen to migrate from offset presses and add more digital full-color capability to its printer fleet. The company also had the advantages of digital printing in its sights: faster make-ready times, no need to keep and manage an inventory of preprints, and no wasteful pulping of outof-date prints.

Selecta researched the solutions available on the market and put the most promising candidates through their paces. From the outset, it was clear the new printing systems would have to deliver output quality that did justice to Selecta’s distinctive positioning on the market. “The Océ JetStream gives us the best balance between quality, speed and running costs,” explains Muraro, Vice President of Gruppo Selecta. The inno vative drop-on-demand inkjet technique delivers superlative quality. The systems are also fully scalable: available in five speed versions from 675 to 2,700 A4 pages per minute, the line-up offers a complete migration path between the various models.

Gruppo Selecta srl With a consolidated portfolio of approx. € 80 million, the Selecta Group is one of Italy’s leading providers of corporate communications management services. It boasts a varied and robust client base that includes all Italy’s telephone companies, leading insurance providers, over 200 banks, 100 public administration authorities and some of Italy’s largest manufacturing companies. Today Gruppo Selecta srl employs a workforce of approx. 500 people. It has four production sites in Italy and one in Slovakia, and operates distribution offices throughout Europe.

Selecta bought one Océ JetStream 1500, which will be installed in August 2008, and has placed an option for two more systems that will be installed during 2009. Together, the three systems will be able to produce a total of almost 100 million A4 color pages per month in duplex mode, giving Selecta an excellent start along its growth path to TransPromo market leadership.

Backed by powerful software Selecta was also impressed by the customer support and technical service quality from Océ, plus the advantage of the Océ PRISMA software, an architected suite of software tools that ensure effective, reliable workflow management from prepress to finishing.

“The support from Océ – particularly as regard color management – was decisive in accelerating our migration from black & white applications to the world of full color.”
