Gambling Reminder With the NCAA Basketball Tournament (i.e. “March Madness”) right around the corner, this is your friendly reminder that NCAA rules prohibit a member of our athletic department staff and student-athletes to participate in any gambling activities in both men’s and women’s basketball. Sports wagering includes placing, accepting, or soliciting a wager of any type with any individual or organization on any intercollegiate, amateur, or professional team or contest. Examples of sports wagering include, but are not limited to, the use of a bookmaker or parlay card; Internet sports wagering; auctions in which bids are placed on teams, individuals or contest; and pools or fantasy leagues in which an entry fee is required and there is an opportunity to win a prize. Any wager, no matter the value is a violation (i.e. $1, $5, $10, wearing a t-shirt of an opposing team). Please contact the Office of Compliance with any questions concerning this issue.
Occasional Meal Reminder NCAA permits ASU coach or staff member to provide a student-athlete or an entire team with an occasional meal (and transportation to attend the meal) within a 30 mile radius of campus (e.g., home, campus, restaurant). An ASU booster (or representative of athletics interests) may also provide a meal on infrequent and special occasions, but these meals must take within a 30-mile radius of campus at the individual's home, on campus or at a facility that is regularly used for home competition.
Boosters may provide transportation to the meal only if it takes place at their home.
A few important reminders regarding occasional meals: • A prospect enrolled in summer school and attending classes during the summer term may attend an occasional meal. • A signee may attend an occasional meal prior to the first day of classes only if they have arrived on campus with the intent of staying at ASU to attend classes that semester. The Compliance Office must preapprove all occasional meals.

Compliance Conundrum Dee Up is a senior basketball student-athlete at Ocean State University (OSU). This weekend Dee has the opportunity to be the first female in OSU history to record 200 steals. When she reaches this milestone, the coaches would like to give Dee a game ball for her accomplishment. Is this permissible? Yes. NCAA Staff Interpretation- 9/13/13Recognition of Accomplishments in a Particular Contest or Event (l)states that an institution may provide a memento of nominal value (e.g., game ball, t-shirt, hat, etc.) which may not include cash or cash equivalents, to a studentathlete in recognition of an accomplishment in a particular contest or event as a benefit incidental to participation.
Off-Campus Contact by Staff Other Than Permissible Recruiters with a Prospective Student-Athlete who has committed to the Institution (I) Date Published: February 10, 2016 NCAA Division I Bylaws 11.7.1.1 Countable Coaches Interpretation: The academic and membership affairs staff determined that institutional staff members and coaches who are not permissible off-campus recruiters, may not have off-campus contact with a prospective-student-athlete, even if the prospective-student-athlete has committed to the institution by signing a National Letter of Intent or the institution's written offer of admission and/or financial aid or the institution has received his or her financial deposit in response to its offer of admission.
COMPLIANCE HOT SEAT Ole Miss Face’s charges of rules violations in three sports By: ESPN.COM 1/29/16 Mississippi has received a notice of allegations from the NCAA charging the school with rules violations in the football, women's basketball, and track and field programs, although sources told ESPN.com that most of the football violations predate current coach Hugh Freeze and his staff. The NCAA investigation has dragged on for three years or more, and Ole Miss Officials had been pushing for a resolution to the case. Ole Miss has 90 days to respond to the allegations. Most of the violations are centered in the women's basketball and track and field programs. Allegations connected to Mississippi's football team largely derived from the 2008-11 tenure of Houston Nutt, sources said. Freeze was named the Rebels' coach in December 2011. The investigation took on another layer over the summer when former offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil, a junior last season, was suspended for seven games for receiving improper benefits. He was given loaner vehicles from a local dealership in Oxford and didn't pay for them. A source told The Associated Press that the football program has already taken some steps, such as reducing recruiting official visits, to try to mitigate any punishment from the NCAA. The NCAA has been investigating Ole Miss since 2012 when women's basketball coach Adrian Wiggins and two assistants were fired after a school investigation found academic and recruiting misconduct. Two players were ruled ineligible, and Ole Miss self-imposed a one-year postseason ban.
