o man of his day had such a golden tongue as did the mighty statesman, William Jennings Bryan. Truly his words were like “apples of gold in pictures of silver.” Both small and great would come for miles to hear him. After such a crowd had turned away from listening to the great spokesman for the people, a friend asked the eloquent orator to describe the greatest thrill he ever had. The questioner thought no doubt that the answer would have to do with some speaking engagement where the multitudes were swayed under the speaker’s power of persuasion. But to his surprise, he received this unique answer, “My greatest Continued on page 2

or the last few elections, we’ve heard it said that, “This election is the most important in America’s future,” and perhaps it was. With our next election less than a month away, I believe it could safely be said, “This election will Continued on page 5

thrill was the experience of leading a St. Louis lawyer to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ in the lawyer’s office.” We believe that every one that is saved is called to preach, teach, or witness. The Lord does not retain many as lawyers, but does ask all to witness. A true witness is to tell nothing but that which he knows.

“ I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”

Paul said,”That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection.” Then he said, “I know Whom I have believed,” II Timothy 1:12. Then he was able to say, “For to me to live is Christ,” and “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Why could he say so much concerning himself? Because of Galatians 2:20, “I am crucified with Christ.” When one becomes crucified with Christ, he is at the same time crucified to the world. We are admonished to “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” The first prerequisite in soul winning is real Christ-like compassion for the lost. Let’s compare our compassion with the heart cry of Jeremiah when he said, “Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and

night for the slain of the daughter of my people.” Listen to Paul as he says, “I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh,” because he felt that he was to be made all things to all men, that by all means he might save some. Now anybody that is saved can be a soul winner. Andrew got saved and went straight home and brought his brother, Simon Peter, to Jesus. Philip ran to Nathaniel with the words, “We have found Him.” Philip won the Ethiopian by preaching unto him Jesus. Stephen used his last breath to shoot arrows of conviction into the soul of Saul of Tarsus. So we see it is not just the preacher’s job to win the lost. It is true that he must marshal the forces, give inspiration, set the pace, and give Bible instruction. A soul winner must dare to be different and even do the unique as the Spirit leads him. On one occasion, we challenged our men in Houston to go after the lost. It was nine o’clock that evening and one of the men stood and said, “My neighbor is lost. Who will go with me to win him?” Brother E. J.

Howard volunteered and the others of us had a prayer meeting. When they got to the home on Sherman Avenue, the house was blacked out and Brother E. J. said to Brother Sam, “Shall we knock and wake him—you know he is sick?” Brother Sam said, “If his house was on fire, we would knock, wouldn’t we?” In a moment, the wife was at the door and told the men that her sick husband was asleep. The men were insistent and asked that he be awakened. In less than thirty minutes, the man was kneeling and a soul found its way home. At the eleven o’clock hour, our door bell rang and we heard the glad story from the happy disciples. Thirty days after that, we stood in Boulevard Funeral Home and preached the funeral for the man that had just found Christ. See what I’m talking about?

“ALL have sinned.”

When Mr. Ivy Boggs came to our church and spoke at a man and boy banquet, an invitation was given at the close of his message and a little neglected appearing boy came to the front. We prayed with him as he accepted Jesus as his personal Savior, In a moment, he was motioning me to him. As we stooped down, he whispered, “My brother is back there—tell him to come on, for he is not a Christian.” We suggested that we pray and as he went home, he would speak to him about the very vital matter. Sunday morning came and Continued on page 3

here came two boys down the aisle on the first stanza of the invitation song. One whispered to me with a smile, “Here he is!” Oh, my friends, that’s soul winning. But there must first be a desire and compassion and then a willingness to do strange things if needs be. Very little equipment is needed, but that which is needed is absolutely necessary. One must know that all have sinned. Jesus is the only Savior and that today is the day of salvation, and that no one can save himself. A dozen scriptures will give a clear picture of these facts. The best way to win a soul is for the sinner and the saint to get alone. When you do, press the battle to the gate, draw the net, or reel him in. “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved,” so get him to pray. And remember, everybody is a prospect for heaven—they don’t

attention. That’s the phrase I’d like to use today—“May I have your attention?” Because of the dreaded summer months, we have been hit very hard financially. So I want to get your attention that we might ask for your financial help. I’ve always been hesitant in asking for financial help, but someone the other day said, “If you don’t tell them, how will they know?” We gauge the influence of this ministry from the comments by phone and letter that are so encouraging. For years, we have touched thousands of lives both old and young—lives that will never be the same as Jesus came into their very being. Without this ministry, one wonders how many lives would have entered eternity . . . lost? There are still many that believe in the message and the ministry we broadcast through the Family Altar Program. Without you, we would not be able to finish the year strong. However, for the last three

come too hard for God to save. I will never forget the experience of winning a Baylor infidel to Christ. Many of us convenanted together and prayed until he was saved. It is a reflection on any Christian school to let students graduate

without being saved. Jesus would say, “What shall it profit a man if he gets all the degrees and graduates with honors and loses his own soul?” Paul tells us 3

months, those summer months, there has been a serious stress on our financial situation. The uncertainty of the upcoming election along with an extreme drought in the Midwest has taken a toll. Nevertheless, bills must be paid—so I reach out to each of you to help make up the deficit that we have experienced this summer. Decisions have to be made as to which stations are performing well enough for us to continue on them. Today the lines between conservative and liberal are being drawn not only in the political field, but also in Christian circles. We are committed to providing the message that God has blessed us with—without the pressure to change a little here and a little there. It is important to be honest with the Gospel message and raise our families accordingly. Thank you for standing with us! We appreciate donors who love the Lord and His message that He has entrusted to us. Y

that “great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus” is a good degree. We ought to stand firmly against anything that would weaken our influence and point a lost person in the wrong direction. Most folk remind me of a thirsty herd of cattle standing around a windmill that pumps no water. A cow can see a windmill for a long distance, but the windmill cannot quench the thirst. It’s the water of life that satisfies the sinner, and not the church. A windmill must face the wind if it is to turn, and so must the Christian face the Holy Spirit, which is the “wind” of God to turn our souls and lives. Too many of us have had our backs turned to the blessed Holy Spirit and thus have grieved Him and thereby have lived lives of unhappy fruitlessness. A little boy accompanied his mother to the grocery store, and as he looked longingly into a Continued on page 7

determine our future more than any other.” Without getting into the ugly battle between political parties of Republican, Democratic or Independent, as important as the party is to some, a far greater issue at hand is the direction of morality, honesty and righteousness our nation will take. I personally do not like to endorse a political party on the basis of name. Parties can change, people within those parties can change and platforms fast fade after the election. As we remember, the last election saw the winning ticket’s motto: “Change and hope you can believe in.” It seems that much of the world picked up on that winning phrase of “change” and it is changing the world. Look at the mid-east and the rebellion taking on a life of its own directed at “change.” Many dictators that seemed invincible were over-thrown. The European Common Market is losing its economic advantage. China and India are changing into a strong presence. Changes all over the world are in the making! It seems that each century is known by certain characteristics. The last century might have a tag of “The century that forgot God!” It began by the fun time know as the “roaring 20’s.” A definite trend away from God was developing and we can’t possibly forget the influence of the 1960’s—a time of youth rebellion. Our culture began a change of anti-law, anti-parent, anti-morality that changed our values that the righteous cherished. The Bible speaks of a period where “perilous times will come”—a time of change. The word “times” in that scripture is not singular but plural, where one can’t really set a definite time, but a trend toward perilous times. In 1968, we entered into a time called the “new age.” It influenced many religious groups and changed many pastors’ methods of leading. With many of these changes taking place, it changed this ministry also—not in the way of others, but demands to help our Continued on page 8

May our dear Lord bless each one of you as you labor in the greatest work in the world. It is such a blessing to tune in and hear the good down to earth messages of Brother Roloff. May the dear Lord bless and meet every need. Keep on keeping on until Jesus comes. H. S. Elkton, MD I was in the City of Refuge in the 1980’s. I came from a broken home and had no family guidance. I’m not going to get into my sinful life. The homes helped me to stand on God’s Word. It cleansed me on the inside and changed me in the thoughts I think and places I go. I learned how to fast often and pray three times a day. I have a prayer place and I meet with God. I want to be a soul-winner in my town. I love your standards and I do keep them in my heart. I want to thank you for your great work. J. S. York, PA. I am an inmate at the Mountainview Correctional Unit in North Carolina. I enjoy listening to the Family Altar Program on WMUU—Greenville, SC. God bless you in the work you do. Please add me to your mailing list. I would greatly welcome any information you might be able to send to me. W. S. Spruce Pine, NC I really appreciate this ministry and the message Brother Roloff preached throughout the years. I have been a listener for many years—just haven’t written. May God continue to bless your efforts to rescue the perishing. M. J. Abingdon, VA

May Brother Roloff’s words ring out to an even broader audience! God bless you all and thank you for the wonderful work you continue to do. I was a resident of the old City of Refuge from 1980-1981 in the same time frame Brother John Downs was at the Lighthouse. I have many good memories of that time! G. P. Pickens, SC I am writing to let you know that I enjoy your program on WYYC. I have learned much from Brother Roloff’s sermons. I have listened for years. Please don’t leave my station as I am a shut-in and don’t get out to church. I pray that God will continue to bless you. Every day you are in my prayers. On the way home, the mother said, “Why did you not get a handful of cherries when the manager gave you permission?” The little boy smiled and replied, “’Cause he’s got the biggest hand!” He waited on the manager. If we would but wait on God, our strength would be renewed and we would run and not be weary, and walk and not faint. May this be our prayer. . . Set us afire, Lord, stir us, we pray! While the world perishes, we go our way, Purposeless, passionless, day after day, Set us afire, Lord, stir us, we pray!! Y

youth that had bought into the anti-parent, anti-church, anti-law influence that spread across our nation. After the last election with all its excitement and promises of a united America of hope and a new tomorrow, is it possible to say, “I didn’t see that coming?” The last few years have seen ups and downs, twists and turns and unexpected changes, with government intervention into our businesses and lives. There seem to be people in Washington staying awake nights just thinking of ways to put regulations on our lives. Will a change in leadership change any of this? I can’t answer that—only time will give us that answer—but we know that something must change so that we might go back to Biblical and Constitutional principles that will protect our freedoms. Through all these years of change, we have experienced a change in culture that affected

the church. Many of you will remember the simplistic days of living where we had a little church on every few corners in town, where the windows were open and the singing and preaching heard in the neighborhood. A time when evangelists traveled across the land bringing new converts to the community and testimonies were heard in public gatherings. And a time when people gave up their evenings to attend church. It was that important! When Brother Roloff knelt down in a cotton field to surrender to preach, I doubt that he entertained any idea of the direction and changes in our country that would cause him to direct his ministry to help people that were without hope. I would love to go back to the time of the old-fashioned church services that were not market driven, but spiritually driven to bring people to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Frances 8

and I traveled with him many times and saw an old-fashioned invitation given and an altar crowded with people crying out to God for forgiveness of sin, where lives surrendered to the call of God! Times have changed, but the needs of people are still the same. “Where can I find God? Where can I find hope? How can I get my family back together, living for Him?” Our message that Brother Roloff had so faithfully preached has not changed and the need is even more pressing today. That is the purpose of maintaining this ministry that changed lives and continues to speak to the heart today. We must pray for this year’s election like never before as there is so much at stake. Joshua spoke to his people and said, “Choose you this day whom you will serve.” Forget party lines, but be knowledgeable of the issues that will determine the fate of our nation! Y
