ALDREAKIS ALLEN • RB • Junior Liberty • Colbert, Ga.
TANNER BURCH • LB • Sophomore Gardner-Webb • Savannah, Ga.
Allen rushed for a career-high 183 yards on 13 carries and tied the Big South single-game record with four rushing touchdowns in the Flames’ road win at Presbyterian College. Allen scored on runs of 59, 10, 35 and 5 yards against the Blue Hose.
Burch posted a career-high 18 tackles, including 10 solo stops, as well as two tackles-for-loss, one pass break-up and one quarterback hurry in leading Gardner-Webb to its first victory of the season. One of his stops behind the line came on a fourth-and-inches play in the fourth quarter that gave GWU the ball back for the game-winning drive.

OPENING ON A POSITIVE NOTE Liberty is 2-0 in Big South play for the sixth consecutive season, extending its Big South record for most consecutive seasons opening League play 2-0. The Flames will look for their sixth-straight 3-0 start Oct. 27. Meanwhile, Stony Brook is 2-0 for the fourth-straight year and is looking to start 3-0 for the fourth consecutive season. POLL POSITION Stony Brook is ranked No. 10 this week in both the FCS Coaches poll and The Sports Network national ranking. It is the first time that a Big South member has been ranked in BOTH polls each of the first eight weeks of the regular-season (including preseason), as well as the highest ranking for a Big South program at this point of the season. The last time a Big South program was ranked in the Top 10 in a national poll was 2006 when Coastal Carolina was No. 9 in the final CSN Coaches Poll. THE BUCS START HERE Charleston Southern snapped its eight-game Big South losing streak with its 32-14 win over VMI this past Saturday. The victory also ended the Bucs’ six-game home losing skid as well. The 18-point margin of victory was CSU’s largest in a Conference game since Nov. 22, 2008 when the Bucs shut out Coastal Carolina, 24-0. FANNING THE FLAMES Liberty amassed 692 yards of total offense this past Saturday at Presbyterian College, a Big South single-game record for a Conference contest and the second-highest overall single-game total -- just three yards shy of that record. The Flames averaged 9.35 yards per play against the Blue Hose, the second-highest average in a Big South game and ninth-best overall. RECORD RUSH Stony Brook RB MIGUEL MAYSONET has scored a rushing touchdown in each of the first seven games of the season, becoming the first Big South player to open the campaign with seven-straight games with a rushing touchdown. He has 11 rushing touchdowns already this season and 38 in his Stony Brook career, and needs two more rushing scores to become the third Big South player with 40. Maysonet has 10 career multi-TD games, tied for third-most in League history. 30 FOR 30 Gardner-Webb has scored 30 points in back-to-back games for the first time under second-year head coach RON DICKERSON JR., as well as the first time since the 2008 campaign when the Runnin’ Bulldogs scored 30-or-more points in three consecutive games twice that season. MIGUEL’S MAYSONERY Stony Brook RB MIGUEL MAYSONET has rushed for 1,121 yards already, becoming the first player in Big South history to surpass 1,000 rushing yards through the first seven games of the season. Maysonet is averaging 160.1 rushing yards per game, pacing way ahead of the Big South single-season record of 136.4 rushing yards per game that Liberty’s RASHAD JENNINGS set in 2008. Maysonet is the fourth player in League history with two 200-yard rushing games in one season, and needs nine rushing yards to move into the Big South single-season Top 10 for rushing. SINGLE SCOOP Stony Brook’s six-point win at Coastal Carolina this past weekend was its first single-digit margin of victory in a Big South game since Nov. 21, 2009 when the Seawolves won by three points over Liberty (36-33). SBU had won its last 12 Conference games by double-figures before its 27-21 victory over the Chanticleers. CHANGE HIS NAME TO BARRY ALLEN Liberty RB ALDREAKIS ALLEN tied a Big South single-game record with four rushing touchdowns this past Saturday at Presbyterian College. He is the seventh different player to achieve this feat in Big South history, and the third Liberty player on the list. Meanwhile, Allen rushed for a career-high 183 yards against the Blue Hose, his third 100-yard rushing game this season and the seventh of his career. He is second in the Big South with 561 rushing yards -- just 51 yards away from matching his singleseason career-best of 612 in 2011. BIG SOUTH’S “BB&T GAME OF THE WEEK” CONTINUES THIS SATURDAY ON ESPN3 The Big South’s television “BB&T Game of the Week” package continues this Saturday with Presbyterian at Charleston Southern live at 1:30pm on ESPN3. EVAN LEPLER (play-by-play) and NATE ROSS (analyst) will call the action from Buccaneer Field. The Big South Conference has its largest football TV package ever in 2012, as a League-record 27 games will be televised this season. Overall, the Big South will appear on television every week of the season for the first time in the League’s 11-year football history, and will also have a “Game of the Week” carried on ESPN3 during all seven weeks of the Conference season for the first time. The Big South’s Conference TV slate features seven games on ESPN3 and an additional two on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN).

MEET THE BIG SOUTH’S ALL-TIME LEADING RUSHER -- MIGUEL MAYSONET Stony Brook RB MIGUEL MAYSONET became the Big South’s all-time leading rusher in Week 6 when he eclipsed the record of 3,633 that was held for three-plus seasons by Liberty’s RASHAD JENNINGS. Maysonet’s career tally now stands at 3,882, and he needs 118 rushing yards to become the Big South’s first player with 4,000 in a career. Based on his season average of 160.1 rushing yards per game, Maysonet is on track to end the regular-season with 4,522. Here is a look at the Big South’s 3,000-yard rushers: RK 1. 2. 3. 4.

HUBBA BUBBA Gardner-Webb kick returner J.J. HUBBARD had 171 kick return yards this past Saturday against MidAmerica Nazarene. He had 121 yards on three kickoff returns (40.3 average) in addition to a 50-yard punt return. Hubbard also returned a kickoff 63 yards, and is the second Big South player this season and in history to have a 60-yard kickoff return and 50-yard punt return in the same game. Liberty’s KEVIN FOGG was the first when he had a 77-yard punt return touchdown and 67-yard kickoff return against Norfolk State in Week 2. BUCKING THE TREND Traditionally a passing team during its time in the Big South, Charleston Southern had 66 rush attempts and 307 rushing yards this past Saturday against VMI. It was the most rush attempts for the Bucs as Big South members and their highest rushing total in a Big South game. The 66 rush attempts are tied for the sixth-most in a single-game in League history. YES HE CRAN Gardner-Webb TE SETH CRANFILL has 27 receptions this season, the most by a Big South tight end thus far and sixth overall in the Conference. His current season total is the most by a Big South tight end since Coastal Carolina’s DAVID DURAN had 34 in 2010. Cranfill had nine receptions against Samford in Week 3, establishing a Big South single-game record for most catches by a tight end. BURNING UP THE HOUSE Liberty has won a Big South-record 16 consecutive home Conference games. During this stretch, the Flames have scored 723 points (45.2 points per game), scored more than 30 points in 15 contests, and has held its League brethren to 309 points (19.3). The last Big South team to defeat Liberty inside Williams Stadium was Gardner-Webb on Oct. 21, 2006 (27-24). POINT OF ORDER Liberty owns the Big South record for most consecutive games with a point scored at 80. Meanwhile, Gardner-Webb has not been shutout in its last 50 games, followed by Stony Brook (47) and VMI (26). WOLF TRAP Stony Brook has won 11 consecutive home Big South games -- the second-longest streak in Conference history and trailing Liberty’s current 16-game span. The Seawolves have scored 441 points during their string (40.1 points per game), have scored more than 30 points in nine contests -- including the last six over 40, and have held the Conference membership to 178 points (16.2 average). The last Big South team to defeat Stony Brook inside LaValle Stadium was Gardner-Webb on Nov. 1, 2008 (34-33). PURE ESSENCE Stony Brook QB KYLE ESSINGTON tied the Big South single-game record with 5 touchdown passes against Charleston Southern in Week 6. Essington is the fourth different Big South quarterback to achieve this feat, joining Charleston Southern’s COLLIN DRAFTS (twice), Gardner-Webb’s JEREMY MARTIN and Coastal Carolina’s ZACH MacDOWALL. Meanwhile, Essington is currently eighth in League history with 34 career TD strikes. PASSING GRADES Coastal Carolina QB ARAMIS HILLARY has thrown a touchdown pass in eight consecutive games (16 total), and is the first Coastal Carolina signal-caller to throw a TD strike in the first six games of the season since TYLER THIGPEN did so in all 12 games of the 2006 season. SEAWOLVES’ HOME WIN STREAK AT TEN Stony Brook has won 10 consecutive home games, a streak that began Sept. 24 of last year. It is tied for the third-longest home win streak in Big South history. During their streak, the Seawolves are averaging 45.5 points (including seven 40-point games) while holding their visitors to an average of 17.1 points. The Big South record for longest home winning streak is 12 games.

BYRD WATCHING Presbyterian College RB LANCE BYRD moved into the Big South’s all-time Top 10 rushing leaders this past weekend during the Liberty game. He is now ninth in League history with 2,374 career rushing yards, and needs 74 yards to move past former Stony Brook RB BROCK JACKOLSKI (2,447 from 201011) for eighth. DOUBLED UP Liberty owns the Conference record for most consecutive Big South games scoring in double figures at 36. Stony Brook has the next-longest active streak at 24 games. Meanwhile, the Flames have scored in all 48 of their Conference games since 2002, while VMI has tallied points in all 45 of its League contests since joining the Big South in 2003. Presbyterian College is the final Conference member to have not been shut out in a League contest (20 games). THIS NOTE IS TOTALLY OFFENSIVE TO DEFENSES Stony Brook RB MIGUEL MAYSONET needs 118 yards for 4,000 career total offense yards, while Coastal Carolina QB ARAMIS HILLARY is 141 yards shy of the same milestone. The two would join 11 players in Big South history who amassed 4,000 yards of offense in their careers. Stay tuned. 50 SHADES OF GREY Liberty scored a season-high 56 points Saturday at Presbyterian College, the fourth consecutive season that the Flames have scored at least 50 points a Big South game. It is the longest such streak in League history. Stony Brook has accomplished the feat in 2009, 2010 and 2011, and has four Big South games remaining to match Liberty’s mark. 50-YARD DASHES Stony Brook RB MIGUEL MAYSONET had a 64-yard run and 58-yard scamper this past Saturday at Coastal Carolina, the first Big South player since Gardner-Webb’s KENNY LITTLE in 2011 to have two 50-yard rushes in the same game. Last season against the Seawolves on Nov. 12, Little had runs of 54 and 50 as part of his 153-yard rushing day. THIS NOTE IS SURE TO FIRE UP SOMEONE Liberty has suffered three of its four losses by seven points-or-less with a combined 12 points in those contests. The Flames haven’t had this many close calls since the 2006 campaign when Liberty had four losses by seven points-or-less. HE’S JUST PAT Liberty WR PAT KELLY surpassed 100 career receptions at Montana in Week 3, becoming the 22nd player in Big South history to reach the milestone. He had 14 catches against the Grizzlies -- tied for second-most in a single-game in League annals. Kelly now has 129 career catches, good for 11th alltime in the Conference record books. He is 15 receiving yards away from entering the Big South’s Top 10 in that category. Meanwhile, Kelly is on pace for 86 receptions this season, which would be the second-highest single-season total in Big South history. LONG DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP Stony Brook QB KYLE ESSINGTON and WR KEVIN NORRELL have connected on three touchdown pass plays of at least 60 yards this season. In Week 1, it was an 89-yard touchdown pass against Central Connecticut State -- the second-longest pass play in Big South history. In Week 2, it was an 86-yard scoring strike against Pace -- the fourth-longest pass play in Conference annals. In Week 3, the duo hooked up for a 63-yard TD strike at Syracuse. Essington and Norrell are the first quarterback-receiver combination with two 80-yard pass plays in the League’s record books, while Norrell is the first Big South player with two 80-yard catches. Essington is the fourth Big South signal-caller with two 80-yard completions. SKIFF & WESSON Stony Brook kicker WESLEY SKIFFINGTON is second in Big South history with 157 career point-aftertouchdown kicks, and is one field goal away from becoming the fourth kicker in League annals with 40. Skiffington is third among the Conference’s all-time kick scoring leaders with 274 points as well as 10-point kicking games with seven. DURAN DURAN Coastal Carolina TE DAVID DURAN is the Big South’s career holder for most receptions by a tight end with 62. He became the all-time leader in Week 1 with two catches against North Carolina A&T to break the Conference record of 59 that was set by Gardner-Webb’s JOSH MILLER from 2007-10. Duran is also the Big South’s all-time leader for receiving yards by a tight end with 841.

MARGINAL NOTE Four of the six Big South Conference games this season have been decided by double figures ( =66.7 percent), including two by at least 40 points, and the average winning margin thus far is 22.0 points. Last year, the 21 Conference football games were decided by 19.2 points. WOODWORKING Liberty QB JOSH WOODRUM is 94-of-123 passing ( =76.4 percent) for 1,163 yards and seven TDs in his four starts as the Flames’ signal-caller. He is 2-2 starting under center, and threw for a career-high 373 yards against Gardner-Webb in Week 6 -- three weeks after throwing for a career-high 322 yards at Montana. Woodrum completed 34 passes against the Grizzlies -- tied for third-most in a single-game in Conference history and the most in a game since Presbyterian College QB BRANDON MILEY had 34 at Gardner-Webb on Oct. 18, 2008. SCORE-FOR-MORE PROMOTION Stony Brook RB MIGUEL MAYSONET is now seventh in Big South history with 252 career points scored. He became the fourth player in League history with 40 career touchdowns when he scored from 1-yard out against Charleston Southern in Week 6. Maysonet ranks fourth in the Big South record books with 42 career TDs, and needs two to move into a tie for third with former Coastal Carolina WR JEROME SIMPSON (44). YOU COMPLETE ME Gardner-Webb QB LUCAS BEATTY completed 27-of-32 passes at Liberty in Week 6, and his 84.4 completion percentage in that game is a Big South single-game record based on 20-29 completions. The previous best was 82.8 percent, accomplished by Charleston Southern’s COLLIN DRAFTS (24-of-29) vs. Allen on Nov. 6, 2004, and Liberty’s MIKE BROWN (24-of-29) vs. James Madison on Sept. 17, 2011. Meanwhile, Beatty’s percentage gave Gardner-Webb the all-time Big South single-game record, based on a minimum 25 pass attempts. MEN WITH A PURPOSE Stony Brook RB MIGUEL MAYSONET and Presbyterian’s MICHAEL RUFF each reached all-purpose yard milestones in Week 6. Maysonet became the sixth Big South player with 4,000 career all-purpose yards in the Charleston Southern game, and is now fifth in League history with 4,321. He needs 87 yards to surpass former teammate BROCK JACKOLSKI (4,407) for fourth-place. Ruff became the 12th player in the Conference record books with 3,000 career all-purpose yards during the VMI game, and is currently at 3,090. KING OF THE HILL Coastal Carolina QB ARAMIS HILLARY, who became the ninth quarterback in Big South history with 10 career rushing touchdowns in Week 1, remains ninth all-time with 11 and needs two more rushing scores to tie former Chanticleer QB TYLER THIGPEN for eighth. Coastal Carolina is 9-1 in games when Hillary scores a rushing touchdown (2-0 this season), and in games when Hillary rushes for a touchdown and throws a TD pass, the Chanticleers are 6-1 (also 2-0 this season). TOUGH SCHEDULE After opening the season at FBS member Wake Forest, Liberty played three consecutive nationallyranked opponents. It was the third time a Conference member played back-to-back-to-back games against nationally-ranked foes, as Gardner-Webb did so in both 2005 and 2006. Liberty played three nationally-ranked opponents in 2011, its most as Big South members, and could play a fourth if Stony Brook remains in the rankings when the two teams meet on Nov. 10. The Big South single-season record for most games played against nationally-ranked programs is four (seven times, last by VMI in 2011). Meanwhile, Gardner-Webb’s schedule has been just as demanding, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs three non-Conference FCS foes are a combined 14-6 this season (GWU played at Pittsburgh in Week 4). ANOTHER THREE-FOR-ALL Coastal Carolina played its third nationally-ranked opponent this past Saturday in No. 11/11 Stony Brook. The last time Coastal played at least three Top 25 opponents in the same season was in 2010, when the Chants played three nationally-ranked FCS squads and one Top 25 FBS program. DOUBLE DOWN Liberty is the Big South’s active leader for most consecutive games scoring in double figures at 24, the fifth-longest streak in Big South history. The Flames took over the top spot after Stony Brook’s streak of 28 consecutive games was snapped last season on Sept. 3 at Buffalo, as the Seawolves managed just a touchdown against the Bulls.

DASH AND MASH -- THE NEXT GENERATION Stony Brook rushing tandem MIGUEL MAYSONET (1,121) and MARCUS COKER (480) have combined for 1,601 rushing yards and 17 rushing TDs through seven games, and the Seawolves are 4-0 when the duo score a rushing touchdown in the same game. Last season, Maysonet and BROCK JACKOLSKI had 1,439 combined rushing yards and 11 scores after seven games. SOLO ARTIST Stony Brook DB DOMINICK REYES is tied for 13th in Big South history with 136 career solo tackles, and needs six solo stops to crack the League’s all-time Top 10. He entered the Conference’s 200-career tackle club in Week 3. MASTRO OF THE UNIVERSE Coastal Carolina junior NICCOLO MASTROMATTEO is the Big South’s career leader for punt returns with 52, having become the all-time leader as a sophomore. The previous career mark was 43, set by Liberty’s WYNTON JACKSON (2003-07). Mastromatteo is third in League annals with 390 career punt return yards, 135 yards away from Jackson’s Big South mark of 525. Meanwhile, Mastromatteo is third in Big South history with 99 combined kick returns in his career (47 KR, 52 PR), and one away from becoming the third player with 100 combined kickoff/punt returns. A BUNDLE FOR BRINDLE Presbyterian College freshman DE BRYSON BRINDLE leads the Big South with 4.5 quarterback sacks. NORRELL IS NO DOUBT Stony Brook WR KEVIN NORRELL leads the Big South with 811 receiving yards and 115.9 per game. He is pacing ahead of the Conference record of 108.1 receiving yards per game that was established by Liberty’s CHRIS SUMMERS in 2010, and needs 201 yards to break Summers’ Big South single-season record of 1,081. Norrell’s 23.9 yards per catch average is also on pace to break the Conference’s singleseason mark.

PASSING FANCY Liberty and Gardner-Webb established a Big South single-game record with 771 combined passing yards in Week 6. The Flames amassed 388 passing yards, while the Runnin’ Bulldogs piled up 383. The previous record was 753 combined yards through the air, which was established by Charleston Southern (398) against North Greenville (355) on Sept. 29, 2007. TWIN CENTENARIANS The Gardner-Webb at Liberty game in Week 6 produced a first in the Big South’s football history, as each team had two players with 100 receiving yards. GWU’s KENNY COOK had seven catches for a game-high 146 yards, while teammate CARLTON HEARD had seven catches for 137 yards. Liberty’s PAT KELLY totaled 123 receiving yards on six catches, and teammate RYAN FERGUSON had 108 yards on his five receptions. It was the first time Gardner-Webb had two players with 100 receiving yards in the same game since Nov. 8, 2008 vs. Coastal Carolina. Liberty last achieved the feat almost a year to the day (Oct. 8, 2011), also against Gardner-Webb. HEAD ‘EM OFF AT THE PASS Gardner-Webb’s LUCAS BEATTY and Liberty’s JOSH WOODRUM became the first quarterbacks to throw for more than 300 yards in the same Big South game in Week 6. Beatty’s 383 yards were eighthmost in a single-game in League history and most by a GWU signal-caller since DEVIN CAMPBELL had 394 at Stony Brook on Nov. 1, 2008. Woodrum threw for a Big South freshman record 373 yards against the Runnin’ Bulldogs, the most by a Liberty QB since the League started football in 2002.
