Warning: Risk is Right!
Jeremiah Kirberg // Pastor of Administration Everyone has to live for something and if that something isn’t the one true God, it will be a false God an idol. Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones gives a helpful definition of an idol. He says, “An idol is anything in my life that occupies a place that should be occupied by God alone. An idol is something that holds such a controlling position in my life that it moves and rouses and attracts me so easily that I give my time, attention, and money to it effortlessly.” One of the deepest idols of our day is comfort. The fabric of our culture, and of our hearts, is woven with the threads of comfort, ease and security. We overwork in pursuit of a comfortable lifestyle. We sacrifice family and relationships to preserve a standard of living that is comfortable. We work for that next relaxing vacation to enjoy. We organize our schedules around those things that are most comfortable to us. Just as we do many things in this pursuit, there are many things we choose not to do for the sake of comfort as well. We are prone to withhold taking risks in extending ourselves for the benefit of others. We are reluctant to make sacrifices of our time and resources to serve others. We are reserved in building new relationships with people that have nothing to offer us in return. But Christ has not called us to a life of comfort. The Christian life is a life of risk and inconvenience in order to make much of Christ. John Piper reminds us, “Paul’s whole life was one stressful risk after another...He had two choices: waste his life or live with risk. And he answered this choice clearly: ‘But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God’” (Acts 20:24). Will you consider taking a small risk by getting involved with one of our outreach opportunities to serve our community? Please consider taking advantage of the Halloween Community Connection, the Rake n Run, GriefShare and the Sparrow Ministries Orphan Awareness Weekend.

Risk Is Right: Better to Lose Your Life than to Waste It John Piper
A choice lies before you: Either waste your life or live with risk. Either sit on the sidelines or get in the game. After all, life was no cakewalk for Jesus, and he didn’t promise it would be any easier for his followers. We shouldn’t be surprised by resistance and persecution. Yet most of us play it safe. We are all tempted by the idea of security, the possibility of a cozy Christianity with no hell at the end. But what kind of life is that really? Discover in these pages a foundation for fearlessness. Hear God’s promise to go with you into the unknown. And let Risk Is Right help you see the joys of a faith-filled and seriously rewarding life of Jesus-dependent abandon!
