Global Learning from the Heart of our Community

PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME This edition of our newsletter gives you a taste of the activities in which our students have been involved this term, and some dates for your diaries before Christmas. We have had good sporting success, particularly in boys’ football and look forward to this continuing. Our year 11 students will be meeting with me over the coming weeks as they begin to think about the next stage in their learning. The Open Evening for EWS Sixth form is on 8th December, and is an important evening to attend for all Y11 students. In 2016 EWS A level results were outstanding and well above national averages, placing us at the top for academic achievement amongst Northamptonshire schools. However, our sixth form is about much more than academic results – find out more at the open evening. We are also looking forward to our annual Remembrance assemblies, which will take place on 11th November. We will reflect and remember at the same time as looking forward to future opportunities. I am sure you will do the same. Mr J Bennett Principal

schools DT department. Congratulations Harry! Second Grade News

Harry’s comment about the event: “I felt honoured to firstly be invited to the event, which enlightened me on further career options in the design industry, which I felt was extremely valuable and informative. It was brilliant to see final year university projects as I plan to go to university and it was inspiring to see the standard of work carried out by these students.

On the day I was able to chat to the sponsoring companies such as Blum, and current students from a variety of Universities around the country, who gave me imperative feedback on my work and guided me in the right direction to help me in the future. In addition to the event being a great experience I was able to take home a runners up prize and £75 for myself and £250 for the school DT department which is an extremely generous gift from the sponsors. The whole experience has helped to further my motivation for a career in design and given me the belief and confidence in my abilities I need to carry on in the design industry” Pictured above are Harry and his chair with DT Teacher Mr Mike Pearce

MacMillan Coffee Morning

page 3

On Friday 30th September 2016 both South and North Campus held a Coffee Morning to raise funds for MacMillan. The Upper College team held the event on South Campus, with both staff and students donating cakes. A total of £215 was raised. Many thanks to all those that supported the event. Staff at North Campus held an event during their Friday morning staff wellbeing meeting and raised £ 84.50.

Pictured above are some of the amazing cakes made and donated by staff and students on South Campus.

Sixth Form Macmillan Coffee Morning- North Campus The Sixth Form held a Macmillan Coffee Morning in order to help improve the lives of those living with cancer. Several sixth form students supported the event by baking cakes, cookies and tray-bakes, all of which were to be sold at break time in our newly opened sixth form kitchen. Before the bake sale, we held our very own “British Bake Off” style contest where the members of our Sixth Form’s bakes were tried and tested by our deputy head, Mr Shah aka Hairy Berry. The winner of this bake off was Sophie Williams with her lime drizzle tray bake. £129 was raised and all proceeds will be sent to Macmillan. A huge thank you to everyone for their support and making the event a success.

A Level Biologists visit Leicester University

page 4

On Wednesday 12th October the A level biologists ventured to Leicester University to attend their Molecular & Cell biology open day. It was a fantastic afternoon of touring the laboratories, taking in a lecture, and making models. From the state of the art equipment to seeing cardiac cells contracting from a petri dish it was glimpse into the world of academic research that is happening at this moment. For many it was the chance to speak to professors in their areas of expertise and take a closer look into how academic research is carried out in a range of fields. The year 12s also managed to get in a bit of revision for their upcoming exam week by making model cells with the Cancer Research UK stall!

EWS SIXTH FORM ____________________________________ Supporting Alfie Bear’s Journey Fund – for The Brain Tumour Charity Alfie Bear’s Journey Fund is a local charity from Northamptonshire that works with the National Brain tumour Charity. Named in honour of Alfie Bear, a young boy from Northampton who sadly passed away in 2014 from an aggressive brain tumour called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), the charity invests in research for curing brain tumours. This is a severely underfunded area of research despite the fact it is the largest killer of children in the UK. 100% of the money raised by Alfie Bear’s Journey Fund goes to The Brain Tumour charity; and goes towards researching a cure. ____________________________________________________________

Lewis De-Los-Santos brace seals the win for EWS EWS Year 10 boys are into the second round of the County Cup after a convincing 2-0 victory over Parker E-ACT academy. EWS started the game brightly, seeing plenty of the ball in the midfield and wide areas with Matty Fletcher and Dylan Surace causing Parker E-Act a number of problems down the wing. However, some good defending from Parker E-Act and a good save from Matty Fletcher kept the game goalless. As the half wore on the game started to get a bit scrappy with EWS unable to breakdown a resilient Parker defence despite seeing plenty of the ball. Finally, the deadlock was broken when a hopeful ball from Victor Mwangi was chased down by Lewis De-Los-Santos who bravely beat the keeper to the ball, sending a looping header into the empty net. EWS passed the ball a lot quicker in the second half with Dan Gillard and Victor Mwangi now starting to take control of the game. Victor, running past a number of defenders then played a lovely ball into the run of Lewis who fired home a deserved second goal for the away side. EWS continued to press forward with some flowing football, creating a number of chances. The move of the match came when Matty Fletcher ran across field with the ball, before sending an exquisite ball with the outside of his foot through to Nico Watson, who after beating the offside trap and turning inside his full back with a lovely bit of skill, fired goal wards, only for the Parker goalkeeper to make an excellent save to prevent an outstanding EWS goal. As the game wore on EWS had a number of chances to make it 3-0 but could not capitalise on their dominance and had to settle for a convincing 2-0 win and a safe passage into the next round of the cup. M.O.M: Dylan Surace. Special mention to Lewis De-Los-Santos Team: Dan Edwards, Matty Fletcher, Joe Hemming, Bran Wilson, Josh Fisher, Victor Mwangi, Dan Gillard, Dylan Surace, Nico Watson, Lewis De-Los-Santos.

YEAR 11 BOYS THROUGH TO QUARTER FINALS OF THE NORTHAMPTONSHIRE COUNTY CUP Year 11 boys’ football team took a step closer to the Northamptonshire County Cup final with a fine win against Thomas Becket Catholic School in a penalty shoot-out after the game finished 3-3. EWS started the game brightly by playing some nice one and two touch football in the midfield. After only 5 minutes the visitors were ahead after Ryan Tainton sent Evan Wooding through on goal and he smashed a right footed finish into the top of the net. It could have been much worse for the home side straight after as the ball sat nicely for Josh Baldwin to hit a great volley but the goalkeeper was equal to it and the score remained at 1-0. EWS continued to dominate in the opening 20 minutes with Ryan Tainton curling a delicate shot which looked to be heading for the bottom corner before the keeper got a hand to it. More good football from EWS opened up Thomas Becket once again but unfortunately Jake Buckle could not quite apply the finish. Thomas Becket slowly started to get into the half and we starting to see a little more of the ball. A misunderstanding in the EWS defence allowed their winger to nip in and produce a cool finish from a tight angle to equalise. EWS did not let their heads drop however and produced the best bit of football in the match. Some tidy touches in the middle of the park allowed Ryan Tainton to run at Thomas Becket before sending a ball through to Jake Buckle who bravely beat the keeper to the ball and finished in the bottom corner to make it 2-1. However, EWS could not hold on to the lead for long as a nice cut back saw Thomas Becket score from the edge of the box with a very good first time finish. 2-2 at half time. Thomas Becket started the second half brightly and were now seeing much more of the ball and creating a few chances of their own. Thankfully for EWS Peter Griffiths was in inspired form in goal and made a couple of point blank saves to keep the scores level. Just as Thomas Becket were starting to get on top, Jake Buckle send a perfect pass through to Evan Wooding who gave the goal keeper the eyes before finishing in the bottom corner and making it 3-2. Thomas Becket were now trying everything to get back on level terms and once again Peter Griffiths had to produce a good stop to keep the score at 3-2, however he has unable to stop a looping shot from creeping into the corner and once again EWS being pegged back. With the game looking like it was heading to penalties a dubious decision was awarded against EWS which gave Thomas Becket a penalty, surely a goal here and EWS would have been out. Having been in great form all night Peter Griffiths guessed right and clawed the ball away to keep the scores level and send the game into penalties. EWS were inspired by the arrival of Mr Govind in the crowd and neatly slotted home their first 4 penalties. Thomas Becket then sent the ball high over the bar but unfortunately Peter could not seal the win as the keeper saved and the shoot out when to sudden death. Josh Baldwin produced the penalty of the night to keep EWS in the cup before Peter produced his second penalty stop of the night, leaving Tom Simister to step up and casually put EWS into the Quarter Finals. M.O.M: Jenson Parfitt. Special mentions to Peter Griffiths and Evan Wooding.
