October 2017 Dear Union Ridge Families, October is National Bully Prevention Month and while we believe bully prevention is a daily commitment to the emotional, social, and physical health of all our students, we do recognize that now is a great time to review our Tater Tots ROCKS program with you and share additional resources. As you may recall from the Parent + Student Handbook, our approach to behavioral support centers around R.O.C.K.S. We teach Respect, Ownership, Community, Kindness, and Safety with corresponding expectations for behavior in all areas of the school. For a detailed chart, please refer to the Parent + Student Handbook online. Most kids, most days are well in tune with R.O.C.K.S., but sometimes a student may find they have LOST their R.O.C.K.S.! We encourage families to discuss situations where people have lost their R.O.C.K.S.! At Union Ridge we teach kids to STOP. WALK. + TALK in response to a fellow student who has lost R.O.C.K.S.. Students should first ask the person to STOP the behavior. If the person does not stop, the next step is to WALK away. If the behavior continues or is physical or threatening, the third step is to TALK by telling an adult. In addition, students should understand that telling is not “tattling.” Telling is done to protect yourself or another student from getting hurt. Tattling is done to get someone in trouble. This is important for by-standers to know as well. We teach our students to look out for each other and encourage leadership in positive ways. Your role as a parent is critical to keeping our Union Ridge community healthy and safe. We will be sharing fun opportunities to promote kindness throughout the month and hope you will join us! Please visit our new Bully Prevention page on our school website for important resources. And, if you have questions or concerns please do not hesistate to reach out to teachers, counselors, and staff. We are in this together!
