The Dove March 2014

"Hope In Action for a World in Need"

THE DOVE IS BACK! And What a Year It’s Already Been! Grace and Peace in the Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Dove is back! After a staffing change in the last part of 2013, including several weeks without a church administrator, we are back to producing our monthly newsletter. At this point, Denise Meyer is excellently handling the weekly administrative duties, and we’re ready to take on some new, as well as some old, things. So, here is the March 2014 edition of The Dove. The first part of 2014 has seemed incredibly busy, filled with both joy and sadness. In addition to our usual business, at our Annual Meeting in January we approved a new “Purpose Statement”: “Hope in Action for a World in Need.” I am increasingly convinced that our ability to build relationships with the people around us will be the key to our ability to live into God’s purpose for us in this time and place. Soon afterwards, we both mourned the deaths of Willie Tarts and Eileen DiCarlo and celebrated their lives. Willie’s memorial service was quite a party! I’m sure he and all the saints celebrated with us. Pastor Neil Harrison, Director of Congregational Renewal for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (now that’s a mouthful), together with a team from the Pacifica Synod, visited our congregation in January and met with many of our leaders. They affirmed the changes we’ve been making in our approach to ministry. They also made a series of recommendations for additional changes we could make for our ministry to be more effective in our context. Pastor Neil enjoyed worshiping with us so much that he almost missed his flight back to Chicago. In addition to reviewing our ministry, Rev. Harrison and Rev. Tim Philips from the Pacifica Synod sent me to some training in February, focused on building relationships with the people in our neighborhood. I’m excited to share some of this training with our council and to begin the process of getting to know our neighbors better. One of Rev. Harrison’s recommendations was that we look for ways to cooperate with other Lutheran ministries in San Bernardino. He was pleasantly surprised that we were already finding ways to serve at Central City Lutheran Mission and looking for opportunities to build connections with Lutheran Church of Our Savior. Our goal is, over time, to find ways to get out of our own “silos” and find ways to better serve the San Bernardino community together. The Mission is God’s Mission. God’s Mission has a Church. God’s Church can better serve that mission, especially in communities as challenged as ours, if individual congregations find ways to cooperate with each other in the Mission. This doesn’t mean that we ever “merge” with the other ministries, or that Spirit of Hope ceases to exist. It does mean that, over time, we can expand the scope of ministry we can do, as we grow into vibrant and full partners in ministry throughout the greater San Bernardino community. These partnerships will enhance our ability to be “Hope in Action for a World in Need,” serving our neighbors and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. In Christ, Pastor Jay

Ash Wednesday, Lent, Holy Week and Cooperative Ministry Ash Wednesday will be on March 5 this year. As usual, we will hold an Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. here at Spirit of Hope. The service will follow the historical Ash Wednesday worship structure, dating back to approximately 300 A.D, or maybe earlier. We’ll take a different approach to mid-week Lenten services this year, cooperating with Lutheran Church of Our Savior. We will jointly hold two services every Wednesday, one at each location. On Wednesday, March 12, 19, and 26, and April 2 and 9, a joint mid-week service will be held here at Spirit of Hope at 11:30 a.m. On the same Wednesdays, a joint mid-week service will be held at 7 p.m. at Lutheran Church of Our Savior (LCOS), using Holden Evening Prayer. The evening service will be preceded by a soup supper at 6 p.m. in Our Savior’s parish hall. The two churches will take turns providing soup and bread, respectively, for the meal. Pastor Scottie and Pastor Jay will preach alternate weeks, at both services. You’re invited to attend whichever service fits your schedule, or both if prefer. Although we won’t hold a Maundy Thursday service, LCOS will. We’re invited to attend. Both congregations will hold a Good Friday service. Spirit of Hope’s will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 18. We will hold an Easter Saturday service, Saturday, April 19, in connection with our Community Easter Festival. LCOS will be invited to attend Saturday worship and the festival. And we’ll hold our Easter Youth Breakfast, along with an egg hunt and an Easter Celebration Service, on Easter Sunday, April 20. We’ve had several discussions over the last year about how we can cooperate in ministry with both LCOS and Central City Lutheran Mission. Please come participate in these joint services as we take the next step toward developing a cooperative ministry which will be better able to serve the people of San Bernardino, helping Spirit of Hope be “Hope in Action for a World in Need.”
