CRIME STOPPERS CELEBRATES ANOTHER RECORD-BREAKING YEAR Crime Stoppers Victoria has celebrated another record-breaking year of community crime fighting and prevention with the release of its 2015-16 financial year results. Almost 80,000 phone and online reports were received from the community last financial year, resulting in a record more than 40,000 Information Reports being passed on to Victoria Police for investigation. This intelligence led to a record 5,268 charges as well as 1,357 arrests across the state. Crime Stoppers Victoria CEO Sam Hunter said the results demonstrated Victorians’ outstanding commitment to detecting and reducing crime. “Information from the community is invaluable and often leads to real results when it comes to breaking the cycle of crime,” said Crime Stoppers Victoria CEO Sam Hunter. “In the past year the community has played an integral role in solving hundreds of crimes including one murder, 26 serious assaults, 18 armed robberies and nine sexual assaults. “We couldn’t be more proud of the dedication the community has shown in assisting our crime-fighting cause.” Information gathered also resulted in the recovery of $8,062,140.00 worth of drugs, $1,337,248.00 worth of property and $353,485.00 of cash throughout the year. The charity last night thanked its longstanding partners including Motorola Solutions, Nine Network, Herald Sun and 3AW for helping make the Crime Stoppers program a success over the past 29 years. “Crime Stoppers is a crime-fighting charity and we couldn’t achieve these record-breaking results without the ongoing support of some of Melbourne’s leading media institutions,” Sam Hunter added. “Every sponsor, media partner, police member and community champion should be proud of their efforts.” Recently retired Detective Senior Sergeant Jeff Maher took home the 2016 S.I “Mick” Miller Award for his outstanding contribution as a Victoria Police member to the Crime Stoppers program.
