Lichen Lichens are Indicators of air pollution We can learn much about air quality from the species. Lichens on the lime trees are predominantly the orange leafy Xanthoria and the grey Physcia both thrive in polluted air environments, we expect to see these lichens in big cities and near major roads as they thrive in areas with nitrogen pollutants. Lichens are two types of organisms living together, a fungus and an alga. The fungus makes the body that protects the alga and the alga provides the food for the fungus http://www.opalexplorenature.org/sites/defaul t/files/7/file/air-survey-field-guide-2014.pdf
