%%%This%14,400%st.%office and%research%studio%of Ecological%and Economics%is%designed%to house%a%group%of researchers%devoted%to integraGng%and extending%the%studies%of ecology%and%economy. The%research%is%to%be conducted%individually%as well%as%collaboraGvely, with%the%building funcGoning%as%a%living and%learning%center%for the%staff%and%the%visitors. Program%requirements include%larger%public events%serving%research, development,%as%well%as didacGc%learning.

%%%The%insGtute’s%research%and%community%outreach%informed%the%building%site%(one%of%three%potenGal%choices)%in%this%Chesapeake%Bay%development area.%%The%wooded%site%with%remnants%of%an%early%20th%century%rail%line%nears%public%transportaGon,%vital%urban%center%and%educaGonal%insGtuGons. The% site% offers% ample% daylight% access,% prevailing% breezes,% onsite% renewable% materials,% vegetaGve% and% aquaGc% biodiversity.% % The% design% includes implemenGng%riparian%buffers%above%the%Gde%line%with%naGve%shrubs,%grasses%and%rushes%along%the%southeast%coast. %%%IniGal%site%and%program%analysis%diagrams%helped%inform%building%design,%consisGng%of%a%compact%individual%research%and%team%collaboraGve%‘bar’ where%indoorSoutdoor%thresholds%are%blurred%with%extending%bays%and%terraces.% %Public%and%private%realms%are%challenged%with%open%collaboraGve clusters% offering% engaging% dialogue% allowing% visual% and% accessible% connecGon% to% fresh% air,% daylight,% green% roofs,% edible% and% naGve% plant% gardens, rainwater%capture%and%reuse.%%A%separate%event%pavilion%connects%to%the%research%studio%visually%and%though%a%shared%outdoor%terrace.%%BioclimaGc design%is%complemented%with%sustainable%and%locally%sourced%materials,%appropriate%insulaGon%and%highSefficiency%hvac%systems.
