HOW DO I GET HERE? Marine Seismic Operator Some land or offshore seismic crew experience as a Shooter, Blaster or Recorder is required. Ballast Control Operator This is an entry level position.
What does this career look like? Offshore Marine Specialists include a number of roles: • Marine Seismic Operator Make waves in the offshore world…sound waves to be precise. This work comes at the outset of any offshore project conducting seismic tests to determine a drilling location. You oversee and direct the work of the seismic crew. • Ballast Control Operator Typically operating on a semi-submersible vessel (a common offshore drilling structure), a Ballast Control Operator is responsible for monitoring and maintaining the vessel’s stability as it shifts during operations such as loading cargo. • Marine Diving Specialist As an expert scuba diver, a Marine Diving Specialist is flown in for specialized work during the operation, such as conducting subsea construction work or underwater surveys. • Dynamic Position Operator The Dynamic Position (DP) system controls the engines and thrusters on the ship. Sitting at a computer in the control room, you monitor the various instrumentation, observe weather, wind and sea conditions. • Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Operator ROV Operators control a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to aid in underwater activities such as construction, inspection, search, salvage, repair, and photography. • Radio Communications Specialist This job monitors and operates marine, aeronautical and ship-to-shore communications and is responsible for receiving calls through marine radios and satellite phones.
Marine Diving Specialist Graduation from an accredited commercial dive school and certification from the Canadian Diver Certification Board, as well as some relevant commercial experience, is typically required. Dynamic Positioning Operator A Second Mates ticket and three to five years of relevant experience in offshore drilling operations is typically required. ROV Operator One to two years of formal electrical or electronic coursework and relevant marine experience is typically required. Radio Communications Specialist A diploma or certificate in wireless telecommunications technology or emergency service telecommunications is typically required.
