Spring 2016 U7 – U8 Activities

Week 1 - 4 - 7 Theme: Dribbling/Turning Grid: 25 x 25 Equipment: One ball per Player / Cones Warm up (5-8 minutes): Dribble the ball around in different directions. At coach’s command, players do 10 toe taps – keep on dribbling after that. Repeat 3 times every 25-30 seconds. Once again, on coach’s command, do 10 popcorn (foundation) – keep on dribbling after that. Repeat 3 times every 25-30 seconds. Lastly, move of the day: the “L” move. Every 3 touches or on coach’s command, players will perform the “L” move (step foot on the ball, pull it back and touch the ball behind the other leg to change direction. Make sure the players follow the ball as soon as they do “L” move.). Players must be encouraged to follow up and keep ball close to their feet. Game: The Network (10-15 min) Objective • To develop movement abilities: Agility, balance, coordination • To develop dribbling with the head up. • To develop running with the ball. • To develop turning the ball. Description Place different colored cones if available. Each player starts at a cone. Starting cone is called "home". Ask players to move from cone to cone in a variety of ways. At first try the activity without the ball. Consider the following movement actions: A) Run and touch a cone. See how many they can touch before "home" is called. B) Run and hop over a cone with two feet. C) Run and touch a cone with their hand. Then add a ball. Progression: A) Dribble from cone to cone. Don't touch the cones. B) Dribble around a cone and then go to a new one. C) Dribble around a cone and then go to a different colored cone. D) name a player, coach, or parent to try to tag the players (adding pressure) Coaching Points -

Running with the ball using proper technique (pinky toe or laces) Maintain heads up as much as possible Turning the ball with the inside or outside of the foot. Ball must be close to feet and under control the whole time

Week 2 - 5 - 8 Theme: Passing & Receiving; moving into space Grid: 25 x 25 Equipment: One ball per Player / Cones Warm up (5-8 minutes): Dribble the ball around in different directions. At coach’s command, players do 10 toe taps – keep on dribbling after that. Repeat 3 times every 25-30 seconds. Once again, on coach’s command, do 10 popcorn (foundation) – keep on dribbling after that. Repeat 3 times every 25-30 seconds. Lastly, move of the day: the “pull back”. Every 3 touches or on coach’s command, players will perform the “pull back” move (step foot on the ball and changing direction by pulling/rolling the ball back in the other direction). Make sure the players follow the ball as soon as they do “pull back” move. Players must be encouraged to follow up and keep ball close to their feet. Game: Gate Passing (10-15 min) Objective • To develop movement on and off the ball • To develop dribbling with the head up. • To develop running with/without the ball into space. • To develop communication between runner and passer. Description Players should get in groups of 2. Create multiple gates in different areas of the field using cones that should be 2 steps from each other; average of 1 gate for every group of 2 players (could use more). Player A starts with the ball and passes to player B. Player A then makes a run into another gate and asks for the ball; player B dribbles the ball towards the gate player A is positioned and passes the ball through the gate to player A. Now player B has to make a run to another game and player A will make the pass. Give 1 point for every pass made through the gate. Consider the following movement actions: A) Runner should always be asking for the ball and keeping visual contact with teammate and ball. B) Dribbler/Passer should always make visual contact with runner and dribble with heads up C) Dribbler/Passer should always use proper technique when passing (inside of foot) Progression: A) Add a player, coach, or parent to try to take the ball from players. Coaching Points - Run into space after making a pass; always communicating and making visual contact with teammate. - Player with ball should always make visual contact with runner maintaining heads up while dribbling - Use proper passing technique when connecting with teammate (inside of foot)

Week 3 - 6 - 9 Theme: 1v1 Grid: 25 x 25 Equipment: One ball per Player / Cones Warm up (5-8 minutes): Dribble the ball around in different directions. At coach’s command, players do 10 toe taps – keep on dribbling after that. Repeat 3 times every 25-30 seconds. Once again, on coach’s command, do 10 popcorn (foundation) – keep on dribbling after that. Repeat 3 times every 25-30 seconds. Lastly, move of the day: the “step over/scissors”. Every 3 touches or on coach’s command, players will perform the “step over/scissors” move (move/pass foot around the ball to fake defender out). Make sure the players always go to opposite side; in other words, if they fake to their right, they should go to their left). Players must be encouraged to follow up and keep ball close to their feet. Game: 1v1 to Goal (10-15 min) Objective • To develop sense of urgency and space awareness when playing under pressure • To develop ability to dribble/finish under pressure • To develop defensive instincts when opponent has possession of ball. Description Players should be divided into 2 groups. Coach holds all soccer ball about 20 yrds directly in front of the goal right in between the 2 groups of players. Players in each group should be named: Player A, B, C, D, and so on. Flow: coach will call out a letter and release a ball. For instance: coach releases a ball and calls out Player A. Both players A (one from each group) will step up and go for that ball. First player to the ball tries to go to goal and score; other player must try to take the ball from opponent and score the goal him/herself. Repeat process with other players B, C, D, and on. Coaching Points Attacking: - First touch away from defender - Always keep heads up while dribbling the ball - Use of body when dribbling the ball under pressure - Use of proper technique while dribbling Defending: - Angle/speed of approach - Always attack ball - Do NOT run back to goal trying to block the shots.
