Olympia South Elementary
Welcome Back!!
Well we are settled in and moving into week 3! Thank you for following the new traffic pattern and remembering that if you walk your student in to class in the morning, you need to sign in at the office and wear a visitor sticker. We are welcoming three new teachers to our team this year. Miss Bekka Rood replaced Mrs. Turner in fifth grade and we have two new PreK/ECE teachers-Mrs. Jessica Castillo and Miss Courtney Canzolino. We are so fortunate to have them becoming part of our family at Oly South! Mrs. Brittany Read moved to second grade and Miss Bellotti moved down to first grade. All teacher contact information is on the school website. We have completed our initial benchmark assessments and data analysis and all students will start their RTI groups on Monday, September 11th. Looking forward to a great year!!
Calling all Volunteers!
If you are interested in volunteering at Olympia South this school year in any capacity, it is important that you fill out the required paperwork as soon as possible. I have attached the volunteer paperwork to the email or you can acquire a hard copy by asking your student’s teacher or by picking it up in the office. Please let the school office know if you have any questions.

Schoolwide Celebrations! OSE will follow a superhero theme this year! Students will work to put their superheroes on the wall by meeting their AR goals. They will also work to earn Super Symbols for being “caught” demonstrating Super Spartan Behavior. We will continue to focus on the 5 skills that are formally assessed on report cards: Self-Advocacy, Perseverance, Respect, Responsibility, and Collaboration. We will continue following the school-wide discipline system and teachers will communicate with you the number of marks that your students receive in classroom, lunch and recess. Many classrooms complement this system with their own classroom plan as well. Keep the lines of communication open with your students and their teachers!
Safety Drills and Procedures
I have sent home information regarding the ALICE procedures from the District Office. There were no changes made from last year. We will be having a lockdown and reunification drill this month. When I have the date set, I will let you know so that you do not plan on coming to the school during this drill. All that we practice with the students is lockdown-where they shut doors, shut lights and wait for instructions. We will also walk over to our reunification site, which is Atlanta Christian Church, so students will know where we go if we need to leave the building. Teachers will tell students that if they ever hear lockdown or ALICE on the intercom, they are just to look to their teacher for directions. We do not discuss or practice any specific scenarios. Please let me know if you have questions. We have already practiced our fire drill and will practice storm safety as well. Grandparents’ Day is Friday, September 22nd Information will be sent home later this week.

Reminder of Birthday Treats
Important Information from the Office
This year students are still welcome to bring in treats to celebrate their birthday at school. Due to food allergies, birthday treats MUST be individually wrapped and commercially prepackaged, meaning they must be sealed when brought to school. Bakery items are NOT allowed.
Attendance
Regular school attendance is very important and directly correlates to student success in school. If your child needs to miss school, please make sure to call the attendance line. If they are going to miss more than one day, it is important to communicate directly with the teacher. School Code considers students who miss more than 5% of attendance days to be considered truant. Letters will be sent from the office if your student exceeds the 5% absence rate. If there is a prolonged absence planned, please speak with Mrs. Rogers directly.
