Daniel’s Defiant Devotion* Devotional Passage: Daniel 6:6-10
Read the Bible Through: 2 Kings 24–25 John 3:1-21
Daniel … his windows being open … kneeled … and prayed. Daniel 6:10
D
aniel, defiant toward his trap-setting enemies, defiant toward the diabolical decree of Darius. Praying with open windows three times a day, even if there was a death penalty for it. Giving thanks kneelingly and prayerfully thrice daily, even though it meant being thrown to famished lions. Praying—no matter if the deadly decree was unchangeable “according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not” (v. 12). No shut-window religion. No hide-away devotion to God. No behind-the-doors loyalty. No down-in-thecellar faithfulness. No petitioning in pusillanimous privacy. Daniel was not one to put his religion before the footlights. Neither would he put it behind a shutter. Spiritual religion with windows open. Nothing to be ashamed of. Thankfully, he prayed. No complaint. Defiant devotion. Trusting, pure. Defiant determination to do right. Praying, constant, joyful, fearless, unalterable devotion. Father, give me defiant devotion to You in the presence of all enemies of my soul. *Originally appeared May 1, 1937
