Head coach • Bruiser Flint
Saint Joseph’s ‘87 • 14th Season at Drexel • Career Record: 314-246 James “Bruiser” Flint is now in his 14th season as the head coach at Drexel University. The longest tenured coach in the CAA, he has established Drexel as one of the top programs in the league since arriving in 2001. Flint, who signed an extension with the school at the end of the 2012 season, was named the CAA Coach of the Year in 2012 for the fourth time, one of just two coaches in league history to win the award on four occasions. He was also named the District 10 Regional Coach of the Year by the NABC, giving him four District Coach of the Year awards. Flint has led the Dragons to 20 or more wins three times and has had at least 10 CAA wins in nine of his 13 seasons at the school. The Dragons have finished .500 or better in 11 of his 13 seasons, including each of the last six seasons, the longest current streak of any team in the league. Flint has a 314-246 career record on the sidelines. He has a 228-174 record at the school and an impressive 139-93 mark in CAA play. Last season, the Dragons defeated Elon, 71-64, in the NIT Season Tip-Off. That victory gave Flint 300 career wins and 214 at Drexel, passing Sam Cozen for the school-record for career coaching wins. Since his arrival, the Dragons have had the CAA Defensive Player of the Year on four occasions, have had 22 All-CAA selections, 11 members of the conference’s All-Defensive team, six players named to the league’s All-Rookie team and two CAA Rookies of the Year. Despite major injuries to two key starters, the Dragons finished 2013-14 with a 16-14 mark and an 8-8 record in CAA play. Drexel started off hot and advanced to the NIT Season Tip-Off Semifinals at Madison Square Garden. In New York, the Dragons narrowly missed upsetting No. 4 Arizona, 66-62. In the consolation, the Dragons defeated Alabama in triple OT, 85-83, Drexel’s first ever win over an SEC team. Flint’s Dragons had a record-breaking season in 2011-12. His squad set a school record with 29 wins and won the CAA regular-season title, going 16-2. The Dragons won a program-best 19 straight games and advanced to the CAA title game for the second time ever. Drexel came up just three points short against VCU in front of a sellout crowd in Richmond. Drexel was snubbed by the NCAA committee and settled for an appearance in the National Invitation Tournament. It was the fifth time under Flint that Drexel earned an NIT berth. The team won two postseason games and advanced all the way to the NIT quarterfinals. During Flint’s tenure, Drexel has been an unfriendly foe for some of the nation’s top teams. In 2010-11, Drexel stunned No. 20 Louisville, handing the Cardinals their first-ever loss in their new building. The Dragons also defeated NCAA teams Old Dominion and VCU. In 2006-07, on its way to a 23-9 overall record, Drexel won 13 road games (tied for most in Division I). The Dragons won at Syracuse, Villanova and Creighton. Flint became the first coach in Drexel history ever to beat three Philadelphia Big 5 teams in one season. Flint returned home to his native Philadelphia when he took over as Drexel’s head coach on April 5, 2001. In his first year, Flint led a team that was picked to finish ninth in the CAA to an 11-7 mark, tying them for third in the league. For his efforts, Flint was named the CAA Coach of the Year. Flint has had three stints with USA Basketball since coming to Drexel. In 2007, Flint was an assistant coach for the USA Under 19 National Team in Novi Sad, Serbia. In 2005, Flint was an Assistant Coach for the USA Under 21 World Championship Team that went 7-1 in Mar del Plata, Argentina. His first stint came as a court coach prior to the Global Games. Flint arrived at Drexel after 12 years at UMass. He was an assistant coach for seven seasons before becoming the school’s 17th head coach. He was 86-72 at UMass (52-28 in A-10 play), led three of his teams to postseason play and was the NABC District I Co-Coach of the Year in 1998. Flint was the winningest first-year coach ever at UMass. Previously, he spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Coppin State. A 1987 Saint Joseph’s graduate, Flint was a four-year letterwinner with the Hawks. He earned All-Atlantic 10 honors as a senior and led the Hawks to the 1986 A-10 championship and the NCAA Tournament as a junior. The Hawks also made NIT appearances in 1984 and 1985. He was inducted into the Saint Joseph’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998 and graduated with a degree in financial management. Home Openers In The DAC The Dragons are 10-3 in Bruiser Flint’s 13 home openers at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Dragons had won eight straight before Illinois State defeated Drexel in overtime at the start of the 201213 season. Last year, the Dragons needed triple overtime to defeat Cleveland State, 85-82.
Drexel Under Bruiser Flint Bruiser Flint has been a fixture at Drexel since 2001. Only Sam Cozen (16 years) and Eddie Burke (14) have walked the Drexel sideline as long as Flint. The Philadelphia native has won the CAA Coach of the Year four times and is the winningest coach in school history with 228 victories. Flint’s teams have finished at .500 or above in CAA play in each of the last six seasons, the longest streak of any team in the league.
Graduation Losses The Dragons graduated more than 4,000 career points at the end of last season. Gone are Chris Fouch and Frantz Massenat, the fifth and sixth leading scorers in school history. The duo combined for 3,590 points during their four years. In addition, Dartaye Ruffin, the seventh leading rebounder in school history also completed his eligibility. CAA Success Drexel is now in its 14th season in the CAA after moving to the conference from the America East Conference. In the previous 13 seasons, Drexel has a 139-93 record in league play. The Dragons have advanced to two title games in that time and have recorded 10 or more league wins in nine of the 13 seasons in the CAA. Navigating the Non-Conference The Dragons have one of their toughest nonconference schedules in recent memory. For the second straight season the Dragons opened up at a Pac-12 opponent, this year against Colorado. The Dragons returned home to face Saint Joseph’s tonight before playing in the Charleston Classic. Other teams coming to the DAC include La Salle, a Sweet 16 participant two years ago, and a Southern Mississippi team that won 29 games last season. Drexel will also play on the road against Big 10-foe Penn State in Allentown and at Buffalo.
New Faces The Dragons will have six new faces on the floor this year. The most experienced will be Sooren Derboghosian. The 6-foot-10 big man earned his undergraduate degree at UCLA and will have one year of eligibility remaining. He redshirted last year and played limited minutes in Westwood. Rashann London, Sammy Mojica, Tyshawn Myles and Austin Williams are freshmen on this year’s team. London and Mojica will be pressed into duty right away with the injury to Major Canady. London will see most of his time at the point, while Mojica is more of a wing player. Myles and Williams will be competing for playing time in the frontcourt. Ahmad Fields is the other newcomer. Fields transfered from Utah and will have to sit out the season due to NCAA transfer rules. He will have three seasons of eligibility remaining starting in the fall of 2015.
The Series vs. The Hawks Saint Joseph’s owns a commanding 45-9 lead in the series. However, the series has been much closer in the last decade. Four of those nine wins have come since Bruiser Flint took over on the sidelines. In their last 10 meetings, the Hawks have a 6-4 edge. Saint Joseph's has won the last three meetings, including a 75-55 win on Hawk Hill in December of last year. Hilal Kanacevic had 27 points and 14 rebounds to pace the Hawks. Tavon Allen scored 20 for Drexel.
In-Season Tournaments The upcoming Charleston Classic will be Drexel’s ninth in-season tournament under Flint. Last year, the Dragons were in the NIT Season Tip-Off and advanced to the semifinals in MSG. Drexel lost to Arizona in the semis and defeated Alabama in the consolation. In 2012, Drexel went 1-2 in the Anaheim Classic and in 2011, the Dragons were 1-2 at the Paradise Jam. Drexel’s last in-season tournament championship came in 2007, when they won the Liberty Bracket of the Philly Classic. They also won the 2003 Florida International Tournament in Miami.
Injury Bug For the fourth straight season, the Dragons have had at least one player go down with a season-ending
injury. Major Canady fractured his ankle in practice in late October and will miss the entire season. Last year, Preseason All-CAA pick Damion Lee went down with a knee injury in the NIT Season Tip-Off against Arizona. The year before, Chris Fouch, the school’s fifth all-time leading scorer was sidelined for the season in the third game of the season. Back in 2011, the year Drexel won 27 games, Tavon Allen was hurt in the preseason and missed his entire freshman year.
those numbers this year as he is the team’s top post presence. Joining Williams up front is Mohamed Bah. The sophomore from Mali is an exceptional athlete who has the chance to be a solid rebounder and shot blocker. Bah’s offensive game hasn’t caught up to his defensive skills, but Bah has a high ceiling, not to mention a solid physique that can play at a high level. He played sparingly as a freshman but should start at forward this season.
Milestones Damion Lee *Is 28 points away from becoming the 34th Dragon to score 1,000 career points and is seven three-pointers away from moving into 13th on the Drexel career list Tavon Allen *Is four field goals away from 200 in his career *Is one three-pointers shy of 50 in his career
The Return of Damion Damion Lee is looking forward to returning to the court this season. The junior was a Preseason All-CAA pick a year ago after an outstanding first two seasons. However, Lee’s season ended with a knee injury against Arizona. The Baltimore native is back and ready to go this season. As a sophomore, Lee was a Second Team All-CAA pick. He finished third in the CAA in points per game (17.1), second in FT% (.829), sixth in 3-Pt.% (.360) and fourth in three-pointers per game. Lee has 972 career points and already has 133 three-pointers.
Point Guard Possibilities The Dragons found themselves without the services of their starting point guard when Major Canady was injured. The duties will now fall upon a number of players, including Rashann London. The freshman from Philadelphia has been running the show in practice. He committed just one turnover in 27 minutes at Colorado. Senior Freddie Wilson may also see some time at the point. He played mostly on the wing in limited duty last year.
Breakout Candidates If you are looking for players under the radar in the CAA, the Dragons have three distinct possibilities. Junior Tavon Allen was off to a strong start as a sophomore. Allen scored in double figures in 10 of his first 15 games, including four in a row, before being injured. After his injury, Allen was inconsistent but was still able to average 11.7 points per game. His play this year is a key to Drexel’s success. Up front, another breakout candidate is Rodney Williams. The sophomore moved into the starting line-up due to injury last year and made steady progress. He was named to the CAA All-Rookie team after averaging 5.4 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Williams has a chance to really increase
Summer Tour The Dragons had a memorable end to the summer of 2014. Drexel traveled to China on a foreign tour at the end of August. The 10-day escapade took the Dragons to Beijing and Shanghai. During their time in China, the Dragons played four games, winning three of them, and were able to have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see a part of the world that very few have seen. The team departed from Philadelphia on Aug. 23, loading a bus and driving to Newark International Airport. A little more than 14 hours after getting on the plane, the Dragons touched down in Beijing. While in Beijing, the team visited the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and the Great Wall of China. The Great Wall was one of the highlights of the trip, as the team tobogganed down from the top of the wall. After picking up a pair of wins in Beijing, the Dragons packed their bags and flew to Shanghai, one of the world’s most populous cities. The group attended two receptions with alumni and Drexel students from China. The team also visited the 101-story Shanghai World Financial Center and took a Huangpu River river cruise at night which gave spectacular views of the Shanghai skyline. The Dragons split their two games in Shanghai before returning home to the States.
