Operational Longevity of New Home Schools The home school statistical year begins each July 1 and concludes the following June 30.

The table below documents the year by year decrease in the statewide total number of North Carolina new home schools starting with their initial year of operation. The school year at the top of each column is the one in which the home schools began initial operation. Each column then gives the remaining number of those schools on June 30 of each school year thereafter (as shown in the far left column). The second year numbers reflect schools that were closed during the second year as well as those which ceased operation before completing their first school year of operation.

The percentage of schools (by school year) which closed before completing their first school year are as follows: 99-00, 8.8%; 00-01, 8.6%; 01-02, 3.6%; 02-03, 3.4%; and, 03-04, 4.0%.
