Choosing Your Deck

(You can skip this section if you have a deck you like.)

Choosing your deck can be daunting. You walk into a shop, or look online and get completely lost in all the possibilities. How can you possibly pick from the grand variety currently on offer. Here are some helpful guidelines: 1.

Before you begin looking, think about what you love and have been drawn to over and over again in your life. Is it Greek myths? Angels? Fairies? A particular culture?

2.

Ask friends if they have decks they love and would let you handle. If they do, take advantage of this.

3.

Make sure you feel reasonably fresh when you begin shopping for your deck. You want to have your wits about you.

4.

With an awareness of your answer to #1 firmly in mind, begin shopping by searching for a deck that corresponds to this beloved and familiar subject.

5.

No luck? Broaden your search. Look around. 1. What art work appeals to you? 2. Does that art work belong to a type of deck you are comfortable having?

6.

Found one? Great. 1. Does the art work appeal to you? 2. Is there a sample deck you can peruse?

Okay. The archetypes are sorted out. Now what? Now, it is time to get to know them. Yes, you can read the book that came with them now. You don’t have to. No one will ever require it, but you might find it helpful. If you are going to start getting to know your cards by reading the accompanying book, make sure you read the description for the first card you are going to work with right before doing a worksheet for it. Reading a bunch of descriptions can get a little confusing and you are looking for clarity. You can use the worksheet provided, duplicating it on your computer for each card, you can make your own note book, or you can combine those and make a notebook out of many printed out copies of the worksheet. Do what will help you remember what you learn. You might even want to get creative with it. Spend time with each card. Make friends with it. You are going to want it to tell you secrets and truths.
