PROCLAMATION City of Newport, Oregon Oregon Medal of Honor Highway WHEREAS, the Medal of Honor is our nation’s highest award for valor presented to an individual of our nation’s Armed Forces for acting with conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty during combat and at the risk of death to oneself while saving others; and WHEREAS, Oregon has been home to 26 Medal of Honor recipients from the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Air Forces, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Marine Corps who served in eight wars in ten countries beginning with the Civil War and ending with the Vietnam War; and WHEREAS, Mr. Robert D. Maxwell of Bend, a WWII Medal of Honor recipient and at the age of 97, the oldest of 73 living Medal of Honor recipients of all wars, and a Director of the Bend Heroes Foundation; and WHEREAS, the Oregon Legislature and Governor Kate Brown designated all 451 miles of US 20 in Oregon between Newport and the Oregon/Idaho border as the “Oregon Medal of Honor Highway;” and WHEREAS, the Bend Heroes Foundation’s “Oregon Medal of Honor Highway” initiative resulted in the first of its kind tribute to Medal of Honor recipients; and WHEREAS, Newport is the western terminus of the 3,365 mile long U.S. 20 ending in Boston and home to 57% of all 3,500 medal of Honor recipients; and WHEREAS, the western gateway to the Oregon Medal of Honor Highway along U.S. 20 begins in Newport at the intersection of the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, and Iraq Veterans Memorial Highway on U.S. 101; and WHEREAS, Mr. Robert D. Maxwell plans to participate in the October 30, 2017 ceremony dedicating the Oregon Medal of Honor Highway; and NOW THEREFORE, I, Sandra N. Roumagoux, Mayor of the City of Newport, do hereby proclaim, with deep pride, Newport as the “Western Terminus of the Oregon Medal of Honor Highway” with an eastbound “Oregon Medal of Honor Highway” sign installed in the city I!
