revor and Dawn Byrne’s idyllic country home outside of Gainesville overlooks a wooded natural preserve that brings any number of unexpected guests: possum, armadillos, deer, and even the cries of some faraway coyotes. However, entertaining guests—admittedly of the more two-legged variety—is what the Dawn & Trevor Byrne couple likes to do most of all. But there was always one thing holding back their plans time and time again: an outdated, dysfunctional kitchen. The original cabinets and black Formica countertops of the 16-year-old house were becoming increasingly embarrassing and the lack of counter space was seriously cramping the style of the always-stylish Byrnes. Structural issues made them realize that this was a project that needed to happen sooner than later. Very familiar with Homespaces through their magazine advertisements, Trevor arranged to have Jim

LaValle meet him and Dawn, a busy call center supervisor at Nationwide Insurance, right away. “Jim came up to the house, looked around, asked us some questions, and took some measurements,” Trevor recalls. “What we liked was that within minutes we were talking about very specific things, including prices, that Homespaces could do to improve our kitchen. He showed us lots of options that would help us stay within budget. We were pleasantly surprised at how affordable it was to get basically a whole new kitchen.” One of Jim’s suggestions was to utilize the existing cabinet boxes and replace only the increasingly problematic cabinet faces. Since the couple wanted to retain the bright white look of the cabinets anyway, Jim suggested they use some of those savings on subtle design work on the faces, creating a clean, elegant look. Added to the existing tile, a solid foundation was now in place for the real stars of the show: the magnificent granite countertops and the expanded center island and bar area.

“I knew that Jim had a good eye, so we totally relied on him when choosing colors,” Trevor offers. “And since we didn’t touch the tile or the cabinet boxes, we saved a lot of money.” Trevor and Dawn appreciated Jim’s helpful suggestions throughout the process. He planted the idea of expanding the bar countertop with a cool, wraparound area and then matching the extra space in the center island, adding more than six linear feet to the working space and establishing additional storage compartments, including a clever hideaway for the trash and recycling containers. Now they’re completely out of sight. “Before, the island was barely usable,” says Dawn. “But now since we’ve added 50 percent more space, including an extra drawer and cabinet, it’s much handier, especially during Thanksgiving this past year. We used the center island as a buffet for all the food and it worked out great.” Also working out perfectly was the use of the granite. Not only did they have enough extra to create the backsplash, but Jim donated some additional remnant granite to resurface both bathroom counters. Trevor and Dawn only had to purchase new sinks and pay for the labor costs, a welcome surprise that made the entire project come to life even more. The final result is a stunning focal point to their already-charming home. They can’t wait to have their first “official” party later this month to show off all the new work. “It’s like our kitchen has finally grown up,” Dawn says. “This is the one we always wanted since we moved in here ten years ago.” “And we were surprised at how affordable everything was, especially the extra use of the granite slab,” Trevor adds. “Now everything is beautiful.”
