Our Services Individual Counseling
“SAFE, AFFIRMING, ACCEPTING, AND WELCOMING”
We offer individual counseling to assist students with concerns of a personal nature by helping them develop better coping strategies, resolve conflicts and handle crisis situations. Students are allowed up to12 sessions per academic year, though most students resolve their concerns in fewer sessions. Typical concerns are depression, anxiety, relationship issues, identity development, substance use, eating and body image.
Group Counseling We offer both structured, theme-centered groups as well as interpersonal group counseling designed to help students achieve personal growth and development, discuss interpersonal issues or difficulties, and try out new ways of behaving. For a list of our current group offerings, please visit our website.
Our Statement on Diversity Making an Appointment PLAC E PHOTO HERE, OTHERWISE DELETE BOX To make an initial appointment with a counselor, call 704-687-0311 or stop by the Counseling Center, located on the first floor of the Atkins Building which is accessible through the entrance on the east side of the building (facing Belk Tower).
Couples Counseling We offer counseling for couples regardless of sexual or gender identity. Both partners must be currently enrolled students.
Consultation Services We offer consultation to students, parents, faculty, and staff to assist in responding to a student in distress, including gatekeeper training programs (please see website for more information).
Outreach We provide prevention, awareness, education, and stigma reduction of mental health treatment through the extension of our services beyond traditional “therapy walls” to the campus as a whole. Presentations are available by request on our website.
There is no charge for Counseling Center services. Your first appointment will involve an evaluation of your needs and time to discuss your present concerns. This session will help both you and the counselor decide how Counseling Center services might best match with your needs.
Psychiatry A staff psychiatrist is available through the Student Health Center to assess whether medication may be helpful in addressing the student's concern or for follow-up on previously prescribed medications. Students can discuss a referral to psychiatry with a counselor or can contact the Student Health Center at 704-6877400.
