Our response Flooding Response: When rising waters inundated communities across Somerset disaster relief experts worked with volunteers to clean out destroyed homes, remove debris, clear gardens, begin mould treatment and prepare homes for restoration work. Storm Response: UK residents who have felt the devastating effects of powerful storms know that with help they can contain the damage. Samaritan’s Purse stands ready to help by coordinating the boarding up of broken windows, and the installation of water-proof tarpaulins on damaged roofs. Coastal damage: We are a maritime nation, but those living on the coast have seen the ferocity of the sea wreck their properties in a few terrible hours. Samaritan’s Purse volunteers can be the hands and feet of Christ to their neighbours who have lost everything. When debris needs shifting and precious possessions have to be recovered we can be there.
Will you respond? PRAY Please pray for the victims of disasters and for the staff and volunteers of Samaritan’s Purse that we will be prepared to respond quickly, effectively and compassionately. SERVE: Volunteers with a heart to serve are at the core of this ministry. You will need to be flexible, sensitive to people’s needs and willing to work as part of a team. Those with building skills are always useful, but just as valuable is the ability to come alongside a homeowner and to be a listening ear. PARTNER: Please consider if your church could become a Lighthouse church with us to respond at a time of disaster. To find out more email:

How We Respond
Bringing hope
Lighthouse Church
Samaritan’s Purse responds quickly with practical help to victims of floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and other disasters throughout the world and is now also answering calls for help from within the UK.
Partnering with local churches that we call ‘Lighthouse Churches’ in communities affected by disasters provides unique opportunities to not only offer physical help during the immediate clean-up phase, but also to address emotional and longer term needs. Destruction of homes and property is often the most visible impact of a disaster, but emotional trauma is common, and the church is positioned to help provide relational support that people need as they get back on their feet. Through our compassionate volunteers, families not only receive cleanup services, they also receive valuable human interaction and a shoulder to lean on to provide hope for the future. Rapid Response Chaplains trained by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association also work alongside the Disaster Relief Units and provide support to the compassion ministry of local churches, facilitating next steps in emotional and spiritual care.
A Lighthouse Church is one that partners with Samaritan's Purse and Billy Graham Evangelistic Association in our Disaster Response Programme. The church walks with us during a disaster response deployment by communicating the need for local volunteers, helping with volunteer support and providing information and guidance in the context of the local situation. It can also become a base of operations for staff and volunteers while they are serving in an area hit by disaster.
The devastation left in the wake of a disaster often overwhelms the area it strikes, and the need for outside resources and help is crucial. We assess the needs and, when possible, provide immediate assistance through partnership with local churches and emergency management services. Samaritan’s Purse primarily provides the tools and safety equipment; and mobilises and manages local community volunteers to carry out the disaster response operations. Coordinating with local and regional authorities and the emergency services, Samaritan’s Purse positions a Disaster Response team directly in the affected community and makes available both resources and volunteers to provide home and property reclamation, debris removal, and mould treatment for the properties of disaster victims. Once on location, volunteer work teams are dispatched to serve the most vulnerable victims, typically the elderly, those with low or no incomes, or those without insurance. We believe that responding to the needs of those who have been devastated by disasters is fulfilling the role of the Good Samaritan and is in keeping with Christ’s command to “go and do likewise” (Luke 10).
Response ready Our trained assessors and team leaders are ready to respond at a moment’s notice to meet the immediate needs of those affected by disasters. We also have a prepurchased stock of the necessary tools and equipment together with protective clothing, masks, and gloves.
Most importantly the church follows through after an initial disaster response with people who need ongoing support. Contact

Rapid Response Team The Billy Graham Rapid Response Team trains chaplains for deployment to communities ravaged by disaster to care for the emotional and spiritual needs of people caught up in the situation. They also minister to the emergency services and those who are working during the response and recovery phases. Contact

How we work We are building relationships with all of the Local Resilience Forums that operate throughout the UK so that when an incident occurs we work in complete alignment and under the authority of the national and local guidelines.
