GENERAL INFORMATION

Following big efforts in Cali, SPU heads to Ellensburg for Spike Arlt Invite THE SCHEDULE:

Seattle Pacific at Spike Arlt Invitational Saturday, April 22, 2017 Field events 10 a.m.; track events 11:00 a.m. Tomlinson Stadium / Ellensburg, Wash. No live Webcast or live stats

SEATTLE – The track and field homestretch is at hand for the Seattle Pacific Falcons. Following a very successful trip to Southern California last week, SPU will stick relatively close to home for the final three meets of the regular season. That starts this Saturday in Ellensburg at the Spike Arlt Invitational. Competition inside Tomlinson Stadium on the Central Washington University campus begins at 10 a.m. for field events, and 11:00 a.m. for track events. The final race of the day is set for 4:45 p.m. Most of the long distance runners will have the weekend off, but everyone else is scheduled to compete. The Falcons had six NCAA Division II provisional BACK IN THE RANKINGS qualifying marks at last week’s Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, and one more on Saturday For the first time since March 27, at the Beach Invitational in Long Beach. That the Seattle Pacific women easily made it their most productive weekend of are ranked. the season so far. The Falcons checked in at No. 9 on this week’s West Region list compiled by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. SPU has 186.42 points, moving back into the top 10 after being No. 13 a week ago. Chico State leads with 330.89 points. Other GNAC teams in the West rankings are No. 5 Simon Fraser, No. 7 Alaska Anchorage, and No. 10 Central Washington. The USTFCCCA rankings are computer-generated based on results from the current season. They do not use coaches polling, as most other sports do.

MIGHT EVEN FEEL LIKE SPRING Although it will not be quite as pleasant as it was in Cali last week, the forecast calls for mostly decent conditions in Ellensburg. The morning will start out in the upper 40s, but temperatures will gradually climb all the way into the mid 60s by afternoon. The ‘X’ factor will be the winds, which will range from 9 to 15 miles per hour. No rain is expected.

PROVISIONAL POWER Kyra Brannan and Lani Taylor added their names to the NCAA provisional qualifying list last week in Southern California, while Scout Cai made provi in an additional event, and Mary Charleson and Chynna Phan improved on earlier NCAA marks. Brannan did it in a big way, going 19 feet, 7 inches in the long jump at the Bryan Clay Invitational. More than just putting her onto the list, it put her at No. 16 nationally. Taylor, a freshman, initially made provisional in the 400 meters with a 55.93 at the Clay on Friday, slightly faster than the 55.98 standard. The next afternoon at the Beach Invite, she was even faster, clocking 55.84. Falcons freshman Cai already was a provisional qualifier in the heptathlon. Now, she’s on the pole vault list at 11-10 ½. Charleson already had made provisional in the 1,500 and the 5,000. Phan was already provisionally qualified in the 800. Charleson whacked 18 seconds off of her 5K time, now at 16:41.59, moving up to No. 7 nationally. She also improved in the 1,500 to 4:30.84, a drop of nearly three seconds Phan lowered her 800 time to 2:12.02

SCOUTING REPORT SCOUTING THE SPIKE ARLT INVITATIONAL For many of the Falcons, Saturday is going to be a full schedule, from start to finish. That starts with the three women who will be competing in the GNAC Multi-Event Championships in less than two weeks. Freshmen Brooke Benner and Scout Cai are each entered in five of the seven events that comprise the heptathlon: 100-meter hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put, and javelin. Sophomore Geneva Lehnert is penciled in for all of those except the shot put. Depending on how the meet progresses and how much overlap there is, it’s always possible that any of them might have to scratch out of an event. All three also are entered in the 4x400 relay. Senior Sammi Markham is entered in all three of the throws. Markham had solid back-to-back performances in the shot put last weekend in Southern California, going 40 feet, 5 inches in Azusa, and a full foot farther the next day in Long Beach. She also gets another chance to improve her national status in the javelin, in which she currently ranks No. 19 with her mark of 139 feet even on March 25 at the Doris Heritage Distance Festival. Kyra Brannan had the best weekend of her senior season in SoCal, with personal bests in the 100-meter dash (12.10), the 200 (24.74) and the long jump (19 feet, 7 inches). She is entered in the 100 and the long. Junior Becca Houk is back in the 100 and 200 after her season-best races in California (12.47 and 25.70). Freshman Lani Taylor, having made NCAA provisional in the 400 last week, takes another try at the 200 this week. Her season best is 25.35; provi is 24.54. Peyton Harris is entered in the 110 high hurdles and the long jump. He’s still trying to break the 15-second mark in the hurdles, his best being 15.09 on April 1 in Tacoma. Justin Ramsey will run 400 meters again – but this time, he’ll be going over 10 hurdles between the start line and the finish line. Ramsey has not hurdled since his 2014 freshman year. Sophomore Jesse Phan gets another try at his stated goal of breaking 50 seconds in the open 400. He clocked 50.76 last Saturday in Long Beach. FALCON FODDER CORRECTION The pole vault results that were sent out by meet officials from last week’s Bryan Clay Invitational were incorrect. Those results listed Seattle Pacific’s Scout Cai as having cleared 12 feet, 6¼ inches, and Michaella Kahns as having cleared 11-10 ½, both of which beat the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. But in fact, Cai cleared 11-10½, and Kahns got over at 10-10¾. That left Cai on the provisional list, but not Kahns EARNING THEIR PLACES Some of the newcomers on the SPU men’s roster are on the verge of getting themselves into the GNAC meet. Graduate student Lloyd Byram currently ranks No. 9 among conference runners in the 10,000 meters with his time of 33:25.91. Freshman Shayne Carpenter is 17th in the 110-meter hurdles at 16.51. Zach Telfer, a junior, is 19th in the high jump at 5-4 ½, and freshman Christian Wong is 20th in the triple jump at 36-6 ¾. To earn a trip to Western Oregon for the meet, athletes must either meet the automatic qualifying standard or be among the top 20 on the GNAC list for their chosen event. SETTING SIGHTS ON SAC Although she would have to get considerably faster to make the NCAA meet, SPU freshman Alyssa Foote still has put herself in position to compete at a prestigious nationals later this year. Foote, with her time of 17 minutes, 25.78 seconds at the Bryan Clay Invitational, has qualified for the USA Track & Field Junior Nationals at Sacramento State University in June. The meet is run in conjunction with the U.S. Championships. It is open to athletes who are at least 14, but do not turn 20 during the current calendar year and who have met a qualifying standard. In order for her to race in the meet, set for June 22-25, Foote must be among the top 16 declared entries after the qualifying window closes on June 18. SPU also has two others in the hunt to make Junior Nationals: Scout Cai in the heptathlon and Kate Lilly in the 1,500 meters. Cai scored 4,781 points in a hep at that same Hornet Stadium venue on March 17-18; she’ll need to tally 4,950 or more at the GNAC Mulit-Event Championships on May 1-2 to meet the standard. For Lilly, the time to beat is 4:32.00; her best is 4:34.65. NATIONALLY SPEAKING The Falcons have posted eight NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks. Here’s where they rank heading into the week: Kyra Brannan: 16th in long jump, 19-7 / 5.97m Scout Cai: 16th in heptathlon, 4,781 points 38th in pole vault, 11-10½ / 3.62m Mary Charleson: 7th in 5,000 meters, 16:41.59 24th in 1,500 meters, 4:30.84 Sammi Markham: 18th in javelin, 139-0 / 42.36m Chynna Phan: 29th in 800 meters, 2:12.02 Lani Taylor: 21st in 400 meters, 55.84 UP NEXT Most of the Falcons will head north to Bellingham next Saturday, April 29, for the Ralph Vernacchia Invite at Bellingham’s Civic Stadium. Events both on the track and in the field begin at 9 a.m. A small number of SPU distance runners will take a trip to Corvallis for the Oregon State High Performance meet on the 29th.

SCOUTING THE 2017 FALCONS Three in a row. That’s what the Seattle Pacific women have in mind for the 2017 outdoor season. With another indoor championship in their pocket, the Falcons will be out to make it three straight outdoor crowns. They certainly have become very adept at handling close calls, having won the 2016 outdoor title by five points ahead of Central Washington. Then in February, SPU came from an underdog position to edge Simon Fraser by 3½ points for the indoor championship. On the one hand, the Falcons lost seven athletes who were top-8 placers at last year’s GNACs, including Female Athlete of the Meet and three-event champion Maliea Luquin (heptathlon, long jump, 100 hurdles), and individual champions Jahzelle Ambus (400) and Lynelle Decker (1,500). On the other hand, they have 10 back who were top-8 placers. Leading that group is multi-talented senior Kyra Brannan (photo left), who contributed key points in four events at GNAC, taking fourth in the 100-meter dash, fifth in the 200, running on the third-place 4x100 relay and the fourth-place 4x400. She won the long jump title as a sophomore in 2015, and is coming off winning the GNAC indoor long jump crown this winter. Also among those 10 are six with experience at national meets. Junior Chynna Phan (photo right) is a two-time indoor All-American on the indoor distance medley relay. This year’s All-American DMR also includes junior Mary Charleson (photo left), who came within one spot in the 1,500 and two spots in the 5,000 of making outdoor nationals last spring. Senior Cheryl Hong was part of last season’s indoor All-American 4x400 relay.

A talented crop of freshman has come aboard. Among them is Lani Taylor, last year’s Washington state high school champion in the 400 for medium-sized schools. She ran the 400 leg on the distance medley at NCAAs, so is already an All-American. Scout Cai won back-to-back Washington state small-school pole vault titles, and won the GNAC indoor pentathlon. Brooke Benner was second in the pentathlon, part of a 1-2-3 SPU finish (along with Lehnert), and came up big in the triple jump at conference.

hurdles (7th).

Juniors Peyton Harris (photo top) and Ben Halladay (photo left) lead the way for the men’s team. Harris won the long jump title by a quarter of an inch last spring with a personal-best 23 feet, 5½ inches. He also scored in the 110

Halladay was the No. 1 runner for most of last fall on the cross country team. Senior Justin Ramsey (photo right) returns in the 400 meters. He made it into the GNAC finals last spring, placing 8th. Sophomore Jesse Phan, has proven to be a solid 800-meter runner.

Others with NCAA credentials are senior Hannah Calvert (cross country), junior Becca Houk (indoor track), and sophomore Geneva Lehnert (high jump both indoors and outdoors). And, although she wasn’t a top-8 placer at GNAC last spring, Sarah Macdonald is having an outstanding senior year. She led off the distance medley relay at nationals for her first All-American honor, and was SPU’s front runner at West Regional cross country last fall. The pole vaulting tandem of senior Michaella Kahns (photo right) and sophomore Emma Lambert are back. Kahns took the outdoor crown in 2015 and was second last year, with Lambert third.

Falcon coaches Karl Lerum, Chris Reed, and Audra Smith.

THE COACHES Head coach / Program director KARL LERUM Having successfully continued a long-standing tradition of success with Seattle Pacific’s track and field teams, Karl Lerum is now in his fourth year as director of the school’s entire running program, including cross country, a role he took on in the fall of 2013. Lerum is heading into his 12th year in charge of the SPU track program. In 2015, for the sixth time in school history, and all under his leadership, the Falcon women pulled an indoor-outdoor GNAC team title sweep. They followed that up with a second straight outdoor crown in 2016. A few weeks after the season ended, Lerum was named the 2016 GNAC women’s outdoor Coach of the Year, as well as the USTFCCCA West Region women’s outdoor Coach of the Year. The GNAC award was his seventh. He has swept the women’s indoor and outdoor honors five times: 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2015. He also has six West Region women’s indoor Coach of the Year awards and five outdoor honors, thereby giving him 25 conference and region honors for the winter and spring seasons combined. Of SPU’s 11 conference indoor team title, Lerum has been the man in charge for nine of those. During the 2016 outdoor season, 12 Falcon women posted 17 NCAA provisional qualifying marks (15 individual times / distances plus both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays). Of those qualifiers, Jahzelle Ambus (400), Lynelle Decker (800, 1500), Geneva Lehnert (high jump), Maliea Luquin (100 hurdles) and Jalen Tims (400 hurdles) made it to nationals, with Decker making All-American in both of her races. Indoors in 2017, Lerum’s Falcons hit 21 NCAA qualifying KARL LERUM AT SPU standards. At the nationals in Birmingham, Ala., the GNAC INDOOR WOMEN’S COACH OF YEAR 4,000-meter distance medley relay of Sarah Macdonald, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 Lani Taylor, Chynna Phan, and Mary Charleson raced to WEST REGION INDOOR WOMEN’S COACH OF YEAR an All-American eighth-place finish. Assistant Coach AUDRA SMITH Audra Smith, who started out as a sprinter, became a heptathlete, and now has competed in four marathons, is in her fourth year on the Falcons coaching staff, coming aboard in August 2013 Prior to that, the graduate of Idaho State University spent four years coaching at the University of Washington – one year as a multi-events assistant coach for track, and the past three as a strength and conditioning coach. Smith starred in the hep at Idaho State, placing second at the Big Sky Conference meet in 2007 by tallying 5,085 points. She also was a member of the victorious 4x100 relay team, and scored in the 100, 200, 100 hurdles, and javelin as the Bengals won the team championship for the first time in school history. She was a six-time All-Big Sky selection in just two years at the school, and was an USTFCCCA All-Academic pick as a senior, finishing her master’s degree in health education.
