How Can I Help?

The Last Wednesday of Each Month:

“Hands On Ministry”

The First Sunday of Each Month:

The Haven is a local outreach located on East 12th Street that has served Erie for 27 years. Every night, 21 men with no place to go find a place to stay at the Haven. Meals are only provided on the weekends. We pack “bag lunches” of sandwiches and other items to be taken to them. Everything is provided; we simply need help to make sandwiches and pack the bags! If you are interested in helping, please join us in the Parish Hall following the 9:00 service on the first Sunday of the month.

The Second Saturday of Each Month:

The Erie City Mission is a Christian social outreach program that has served the City of Erie since 1911. They offer numerous programs that serve the local community and are continuing to expand its care programs. Most recently, they have expanded their free meal program to include a Saturday evening meal three times a month. St. Mark’s volunteers on the second Saturday of each month by preparing and serving a meal to guests at the mission. Help is needed with preparing the meal, serving the meal and cleaning up. Generally the commitment is from 2:30 P.M. until 5:30 P.M. once a month.

All are welcome at Emmaus Soup Kitchen - no questions asked. They serve a nutritious, hot meal 6 days a week to over 200 guests who range in age from infants to seniors. Some are homeless, many live in single rooms with no cooking facilities. All who come need something Emmaus has to offer – nourishment for the body – care for the soul.

St. Mark’s continues to give support both financially and otherwise to several other organizations on a local, national and international level. We will continue to provide this type of support as long as our resources allow.

How is Outreach funded at St. Mark’s?

St. Mark’s volunteers on the last Wednesday of each month. Help is needed serving the meal and cleaning up. Volunteers can arrive anytime between 3:00 P.M. and 5:00 P.M. on our day.

Other ways to help:

The Outreach Team Offers An Alternative Way to help Emmaus…Each month, we collect items on the Sunday prior to our visit to Emmaus. These items include spaghetti and spaghetti sauce, canned fruit and vegetables, peanut butter, shampoo & conditioner, soap, lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes, mouthwash, diapers (all sizes), baby wipes, and formula. You simply bring us the items and we deliver them to Emmaus. It is an easy way to help. A bin is located near the entrance to the church on the Sunday of the collection. The Outreach Team also collects items for the Community of Caring every other month. The Community of Caring provides services including a shelter, a hot meal program and a food pantry. Items needed include single sheets, blankets, towels, and all toiletry items. A bin is available near the entrance to the church on the Sunday of the collection.

The Outreach Ministry at St. Mark’s is funded entirely through a special in-gathering from the congregation early each year. Mission & Outreach Sunday, as it has come to be known, is the only time during the year that the congregation is asked to make a financial commitment for Outreach. In 2015 that offering raised $6,175 and in 2014 it raised $7100. All of that money is used to help organizations and to continue to foster the outreach programs here at St. Mark’s. Ultimately the Outreach Team is moving toward a goal of being able to give away 10% of our operating budget or about $18,000.
