Outstanding Achievement

After much anticipation, I am delighted to inform you of the outcome of our recent Ofsted inspection that took place on 3-4 October 2017. The inspection team judged Bosworth Academy to be an ‘Outstanding’ school. We have been judged as outstanding in every area of the Ofsted framework. Our school has continued to make excellent progress since it was judged to be ‘Good’ in February 2014. This is a result of the dedication, loyalty and driving passion from our highly professional team. As the latest report states, the teaching and support staff ‘want to excel’ going ‘the extra mile to improve pupils’ life chances’, under the guidance of ‘highly effective leaders’. Governance was judged to be ‘working tirelessly to improve the quality of pupils’ education.’

“Pupils very much enjoy coming to school and show the highest levels of enthusiasm for their learning. Pupils are self-assured, particularly in conversation and debate.”

At Bosworth Academy “Pupils’ conduct around our driving passion is a the school and in lessons belief that ‘no student is exemplary. Pupils are will underachieve’, and courteous towards staff and we try our utmost best each other. The behaviour to meet this demanding of pupils is outstanding.” expectation. It is our responsibility to raise students’ aspirations and continually drive home the message that you can ‘be better than you thought you could be’. This report does not signal the end of a journey and we know we still have areas we can improve; everyone at the Academy is determined to ensure we deliver an even higher “Students are highly positive quality of education and about their experience in the even greater success for sixth form. Their behaviour our students. is impeccable and their

attendance and punctuality are very good. Sixth-form students are an integral part of the school community.”

Applying for Artsmark

Theatre students perform Shakespeare for GCSE English students

Bosworth Academy is in the process of applying for an Artsmark for the whole school. Artsmark is the creative quality standard for schools and education settings, awarded by Arts Council England. It has been designed by schools, for schools, to align with School Improvement Plans and support core EBACC and STEM priorities, giving the curriculum breadth and balance. In addition to this, it recognises schools like Bosworth that are making the arts come alive through initiatives such as The Bosworth Theatre Company. Having an Artsmark will ensure that creative learning continues to be a whole school priority and will allow us to offer more opportunities for our students. As part of this journey, we will be starting to offer the Arts Award which is managed by Trinity College London. Through this, students will be able to develop their creative skills as ‘artists’ in their chosen field and also as arts leaders.

Keeping it Green

Bosworth Academy has been nominated for the Leicester Mercury’s ‘Keeping it Green’ award that acknowledges and praises schools for their commitment to protecting the environment. Students and staff from across the academy have all championed efforts to maintain and improve the environment ranging from tree planting, recycling and building renovation. The school grounds have been developed to be a sustainable resource as we have actively planted 300 new trees with the support of funding from the Woodland Trust. We are keen contributors to the National Forest endeavour. We have maintained a further 300 trees in the grounds, and managed them as mature and semi mature woodland. The building has been renovated in several ways. Energy efficient glazing has been installed throughout the academy in place of old single glazed windows. The heating has been modified to thermostat controls, and solar panels have been installed on the roof to supply a significant portion of our energy. After a visit to the Veolia waste recycling plant in Mansfield, we negotiated a new recycling contract and ALL classrooms and communal areas now have a recycling bin for mixed materials. After a successful trial, these are now used daily and our school waste output has reduced significantly in terms of recyclables. Due to all of our work and effort, we have received a Bronze Award by Eco-Schools for our determination and drive to protect the environment. However, our eco journey doesn’t end there as we strive to achieve the Silver and Gold awards.

Year 8 Girls displaying their passion for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths

On 20th November, girls at Bosworth Academy took part in a ‘Girls into STEM day’ which highlighted all the amazing and rewarding careers available and achievable in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths and encouraged girls to break gender stereotypes to enter industries which in the past have been predominantly male orientated. They were joined by guest speakers and inspirational role model Caroline Flick from De Montfort University, who is a Senior Lecturer in Computing and Social Responsibility, and also Cath Goulding, Head of information security at Nominet. They talked to the girls about their roles, why they

chose to work in IT, what their dayto-day jobs involve, the challenges which women often face in industry and how they overcame these issues and why they think it’s important for more women to get involved in IT. During the afternoon, the girls spent time designing and building rocket cars in small groups, using a range of IT, maths and design skills. When they had built their cars, they had lots of fun putting them under test conditions on the tennis court. Teachers involved in the project said the girls were very engaged with all aspects of the day and contributed brilliantly.

Students meet John Prescott

As part of their recent GCSE Geography fieldwork visit to Hull, Year 10 and 11 students asked local residents for their views on Quality of Life in the city. They received a surprise when they met former deputy Prime Minister John Prescott! He kindly gave them twenty minutes and lots of great information for their studies. Students were a credit to the Academy and proved how well fieldwork creates deep learning beyond the classroom.
