2018 WASTE SECTOR (ONTARIO) TRUCK DRIVING CHAMPIONSHIP Dear Waste Sector Association Member, We are so very excited to announce our “28th Annual WASTE SECTOR (ONTARIO) TRUCK DRIVING CHAMPIONSHIP Competition” which will be held at R.W. Tomlinson Environmental, 3150 Rideau Road, Ottawa Ontario on Saturday, June 9th, 2018. Come out and watch our Private Sector and Public Sector Drivers compete for the top positions. The OWMA is very pleased to offer your company and your drivers another opportunity to come out and enjoy the day while competing against the best of the best. To assist in the organization of the Truck Driving Championship and ensure that the scheduled activities are completed, the individual categories will be assigned approximate start times.
AGAIN THIS YEAR – ALL DRIVERS AND GUESTS ARE INVITED TO AN INFORMAL GATHERING (APPETIZERS AND REFRESHMENTS) ON FRIDAY EVENING FROM 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM (DETAILS WILL BE PROVIDED WHEN YOU SIGN UP). EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY TO MEET YOUR FELLOW DRIVERS AND FAMILIES. ALL DRIVERS WILL WRITE THE EXAM AT 7:00 A.M. ON SATURDAY JUNE 9TH, FOLLOWED BY A GUIDED COURSE WALK THROUGH AT 7:30 A.M. A driver can only compete in one category. Multi-division companies are permitted to enter a slate of contestants from each division, three drivers per division, per category (12 drivers). The entry fee is $197.75 ($175.00 + 22.75 HST) per driver. Make your cheque payable to “OWMA” and submit it with your application before June 5th, 2018. There will be absolutely no on-site registrations OR modifications to categories. The winners of each category in each section will be awarded a plaque that will hang in the company offices for a year and have the opportunity to participate in the Ontario Truck Driving Provincial Competition and drivers will receive awards as follows: 1st Place 2nd Place 3rd Place

The overall “Grand Champion” will be awarded the Grand Champion Trophy to proudly display in their home and workplace. A “Rookie of the Year” award will be awarded to the first-time entrant with the highest overall point total. Be sure to note on the contestant application form if your driver is a first-time entrant. Once your drivers have registered, a Drivers Kit will be available for downloading from our website – www.owma.org. The top three drivers from each category are eligible to participate in the Ontario Trucking Competition that is held every year. Details will be provided to the eligible drivers and their companies.

ELIGIBILITY AND RULES ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: 1. Contestants must have worked as a full-time employee in the Industry for no less than one (1) year. Seasonal employee lay-offs will be considered after two years continuing employment. 2. Contestants must be employed as a driver at the time of the Driving Championship and have performed the duties of a professional truck driver for at least 11 of the 12 months prior to the competition. 3. Contestants must be free of preventable accidents and moving traffic violation convictions for a one (1) year period prior to the Driving Championship entry date. 4. Contestants should have a reasonable work attendance record. Contestants should be disqualified if the driver has missed more than eleven (11) working days in the one (1) year period prior to the competition date without a doctor’s clearance; or have demonstrated chronic tardiness in the one (1) year prior to the competition. TRUCK DRIVING CHAMPIONSHIP RULES: 1. A written test dealing with safety, proper driving techniques and rules of the road will be included in the competition. This will be written at RW Tomlinson Environmental, 3150 Rideau Road, Ottawa Ontario (map attached). This test may be taken verbally with prior notification. 2. No contestant will be permitted to operate the vehicle which he/she regularly drives. If trucks from a contestant’s municipality or company base are used in the competition, the contestant’s Supervisor will be responsible to ensure the contestant does not practice on the vehicle to be used in the Truck Driving Championship. 3. Competitors must be dressed appropriately in their company uniform or long pants and shirt, and wearing acceptable footwear appropriate to be worn on the job. 4. No contestant will be permitted to practice on the laid out course prior to competition. 5. A representative of the OWMA along with the Truck Driving Championship Committee shall disqualify any contestant whom, by a determination of two-thirds of the Committee members present, is guilty of conduct detrimental to the competition or the solid waste collection industry. Contestants shall not have the right to appeal.

Please review the hotel and rates as described below and book early – this rate and room block will only be available until May 7th, 2018 at which time they will be released. OWMA Truck Driving Championship Sponsorship Opportunities Full Category of Vehicle Winner (4 available) The cost is $900 and provides two plaques (one for the company and one for the driver) and monetary prize for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. We currently have all four categories available (Front End, Rear Load, Special Services, Roll Off). Grand Champion Winner The cost is $350 and provides one plaque for the driver and monetary prize for the winner. Your logo and name will be placed on the personalized plaque for the driver for life.
