Pioneer varsity cheerleaders holds back to school pep rally BY LORI CATHEY Gibson County varsity cheerleaders kicked off the first day of the Gibson County High School year with a back-to-school pep rally in front of the student

body Wednesday morning. GCHS Principal Jim Hughes welcomed everyone back to the new school year and introduced the new members of the teaching staff. Pioneer head

football coach Morgan Cruce gave an enthusiastic speech during the rally. The cheerleaders lead spirit contests between the classes and threw candy to the winning class.

Cheerleaders performed a dance routine for the student body to enjoy. The pep rally ended with the cheerleaders leading various cheers for the students to participate in.

Morris competed in region tournament BY LORI CATHEY John Michael Morris of Dyer traveled to the Senior Babe Ruth South East Region Tournament held in Chantilly, Virginia this past weekend. Morris is a member of the Twin City Raiders baseball team out of South Fulton. Starting first baseman Morris had a batting average of .428 with a double off the

wall, two single, two walks and 5 RBI’s, for the Senior Babe Ruth South East Region Tournament. The Raiders in pool play lost their first game 4 to 3 in extra inning against North Carolina. Twin City came back to defeat Fairfax, Virginia 11 to 3 but lost to Mobile, Alabama to end their season with a 284 record. Morris attends

college at Mid-Continent University on a baseball scholarship. He batted .424 with 26 RBI’s and had 13

stolen bases his freshman year. John Michael is the son of Greg and Gwynne Morris of Dyer.

LADY PIONEER BASKETBALL TEAM FUNDRAISER - The GCHS Lady Pioneer basketball team held a car wash July 10th at the Dyer Foodrite parking lot. The Lady Pioneers basketball team would like to thank everyone for their support in their fundraiser this past weekend. The next fundraiser will be the Lady Pioneer’s Basketball 2nd Annual Golf Tournament at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, September 28 at Pinecrest Golf Course in Dyer. The Lady Pioneers will host a four person scramble the cost is $180 per team. This includes 18-holes of golf with a cart and lunch.
